History Mystery 🕵️♂️ This week’s #52weeksofhome is History & Traditions. We keep saying we’re going to get a plaque from the local architectural conservancy and find out more about our house’s history, but it hasn’t exactly been at the top of the priority list. However!! I’m wondering if you smart people can help us out. This week, I picked up this painted cabinet from (where else?) Facebook Marketplace. It was the seller’s aunt’s, who’d been an antique dealer, but the seller didn’t have any info about it, other than she thought it might be Eastern European. She didn’t charge much for it; she’s clearing out her aunt’s home and wants stuff to go to people who’ll appreciate it. It’s the perfect size for this wall at the bottom of the stairs. (The previous cabinet from here became the powder room vanity.) I also picked up this big mirror from someone on FBMP who buys Wayfair return palettes and resells stuff. (Industrious!) We thought the contemporary frame keeps this corner from getting too museumy. And I threw a living room lamp on there to test the size. Also, it’s cow parsley season in the garden, so…voilà. As for the history of this cabinet: anybody got a gut feeling about where it might be from? Or when? Based on the construction, I don’t think it’s a Pier One knock-off from the ‘90s, but I wouldn’t be upset if it was. The Raven's wing waterfall legend 💧📖 Particularly intriguing is the legend behind the naming of this scarcely explored gem. After the Roman rule, the walls of Gračišće stood abandoned for years, far from all trade routes. 🏰 This remained the case until 1199 when the name Galegnana, known today as Gračišće, was first mentioned in historical records. The then county prefect, Držiha, was a great enthusiast of the waterfall, which, according to legend, possessed incredible healing properties. Two 80's JCO's: Solstice (novel) & Raven's Wing (short stories, swipe). 'Solstice' explores friendship dynamics of a somewhat unhealthy social addiction. Two women meet and attract each other like rusty magnets. They have fun, experience danger, and sometimes try (with little success) to take distance from each other. JCO seems to be deliberately drawing the reader's attention to how little person A really knows about B, even though A seems to give B a lot of herself. A gets to know B by reading signs in her behavior. But secrets are being kept on both sides and something's not right. Is it abuse, a game, or something else? You get a pinch of information about the background of the main character, but despite these hints, it remains a mystery as to what kind of stuff she has exactly lived through in the past. Much is hidden between the lines. In 'Solstice', JCO uses a gorgeous unreliable third person narrative with sweet dollops of stream of consciousness. Oates often loves to keep the reader guessing what was really going on. This applies to 'Solstice' & 'Raven's Wing', too. The more I read her, the more I notice this: if you read her superficially, something will bother you afterwards - some things felt strange, and the ending's baffling. It's intentional. She often begins by writing the ending first, so if you think the ending felt wrong, it's not because she rushed - it's because she played a trick somewhere. The ending sometimes only satisfies if you ask yourself: what did I miss? Often key elements are just briefly mentioned - a sentence or a word you quickly forgot as the story moved on. Sometimes her books/stories require a reread. No matter how carefully you read, you still probably missed something. I always do! Sometimes names contain hints, and subtle symbols tie everything together neatly. The immediate reread (be it thorough or a quick skim) is satisfying. 'Solstice' may at first feel like a simple story with a curious ending, but it's actually complex - this is also the case with many of the stories in 'Raven's Wing', which is a stunning collection!

I opened the curtains this morning to a sky full of swifts, wheeling around in giant figure of eights catching insects. First of June, it must be a good sign... Summer is here! And finally our borders are blooming into fullness and colour - here with alliums, lupins, ammi majus, centranthus and ravenswing. Everything has been so late this year - at least it seems that way in the Norfolk gardens where I've been working and in my own. This garden has wonderful deep borders, meaning we could plant in large drifts. It also has a fabulous borrowed landscape beyond the garden walls, giving it depth and perspective. And still much more to come into flower over the summer and autumn. TANKER • I forbindelse med at jeg ville beskrive min have hos @haveselskabet kom jeg til at tænke på at det næsten føles skamfuldt at bruge ordet “prydhave”. Min have indeholder haverum med forskellige havetyper og dermed også rum med prydhave. Et rum hvor jeg klipper græs, stikker græskanten og luger og pudser blomster af og hvor jeg ikke bare smider en bunke kvas imellem stauderne. Det gør jeg derimod andre steder. Så jeg synes, at jeg tilgodeser smådyr og insekter mange steder selvom jeg ikke er 100% med på den nye bølge No Mow May - en lille stripe imellem kirsebærtræerne forbliver uklippet i år og lige nu er de længe ventede Bluebells på vej sammen med den røde kørvel. In March I finally finished my longest running WIP, my Balvraid Hap. I rewarded myself with a Forest Key. I’ve been in love with Vera’s work since the Forest Key Vest came out in 2021, I knew I would one day have one it was just a matter of waiting for the *right* one. Add in the issues that the Ukraine war has caused to the people and artists of Russia and finding that right key has taken almost as long as this Hap. Each key is hand carved from clay in the forests of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. Vera often talks about how the forms of each piece happen organically almost willing themselves into existence and that each piece finds its home. With all that this piece went through to get into my hands we were definitely fated. Now to the story of the shawl. I cast on the Hap in Sept 2019, my mom had bought 3 skeins of Little Fox’s vixen (fingering) in Raven’s Wing and brought them to me when we met in St Louis for a girl’s weekend. I bought a new pair of needles that weekend so I could cast this on right away. I made some changes to the pattern, I did the body in stockinette instead of garter in order to add low contrast color work which I designed. On either shoulder, all but invisible to the eye are Muninn and Huginn, Odin’s ravens. With a colorway called Raven’s Wing how could I not. I love how these two masterpieces complement each other so well. This outfit will definitely get a good amount of wear. These may be the best Elder Futhark runes I've ever made. The wood is Douglas Fir and it came out of a building here that's over 100 years old. I planed it by hand, and the back of each rune is live edge. The wood was so thirsty it easily absorbed 8 coats of beeswax finish! Blue Blue..... One of the tonal ranges we are growing is the deep petrol Blue tone. I always loved oil on the ground as a kid, how it looked black, but when you got close, you could see it had a dark blue shimmer.
