Original, antique, poster: New Shell Lubricating Oils, designed by Edward McKnight Kauffer, 1937. A particularly successful design which uses an undulating ribbon motif to connect the message with the product (a can of lubricating oil which also features the jointed man advertising symbol created by Kauffer). The overall effect is one of smoothness and modernity – the later reinforced by the choice of lettering and the abstract black background. Probably the greatest poster designer working in interwar Britain, Kauffer produced several outstanding designs for Shell Oil in the 1930s. The posters were displayed on the side of Shell lorries as part of a highly regarded publicity campaign. Nevertheless, this poster is magnificent, searing, and only the second poster design issued by ACT UP, for their third major action as an organization, a civil disobedience demonstration held in Washington, D.C. on June 1, 1987. As Avram Finkelstein, one of the six founding members of ACT UP and the co-founder of the Silence = Death Project, describes his preparation for the action and the poster in After Silence: A History of AIDS through Its Images: “The action would involve a series of strategic firsts for the fledgling organization: our first national demonstration, our first civil disobedience about AIDS at the White House, and our first demonstration at an AIDS conference. We were hoping for something that would live up to the potential of the moment and help set the tone for the rest of the year; above all, I wanted to highlight a war footing by tying the coded Holocaust references in Silence = Death to a charge of war crimes.... The image for AIDSGATE was always a fait accompli: there was no controversy over whether to depict Reagan. Always delighted to spot posters I have for sale in old photos. In this case a 1932 British Industries Fair poster designed by the great Tom Purvis, shown in situ in a London Underground Tube car. I saw this photo on Twitter (Back in Time West London - excellent account). Surprised that posters of this size (30x20 inches) were displayed on the glass partitions like this. Here’s the second of two pieces painted on antique paper - a 1922 (the year my mother was born) magazine illustration of a Rochet-Schneider, a French company, based in Lyons, that produced luxury automobiles between 1894 and 1932. The original page is a beautiful, French print from L'illustration magazine, a publication known for its marvelous design and artwork. I left the name and the date of publication uncovered. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post of the other piece, the composition is inspired by the minimalist and streamlined art movement of that time, called “Art Deco”. It was minimalist and streamlined. Swipe to view the original poster before I painted on it, once more for a detail video, and a third time to see a photo of one of these cars from 1922. Named “It’s About the Journey” (number 2), this is acrylic on antique paper (yr. 1922), mounted on a 16 x 11 x 1 inch cradled birch wood panel, floating in an 18 x 13 x 2.5 inch basswood frame. (Note, this is not a collage - all elements are painted on paper, preserving some of the original elements). Flat & Bound, curated by Lars Müller, offers exhibition posters by a wide range of designers from the 1950s to the 1990s. It is not uncommon, then as now, for artists to also design the posters for their solo shows. Among Mr. Müller’s selection, the personal union of artist/graphic designer is most frequently found with Max Bill. Another example is the American Op Art artist Richard Anuszkiewicz, whose 1967 exhibition poster is available at Flat & Bound. The Flat & Bound collection traces the most important creative phase of several poster designers. In the field of exhibition posters, you will find Swiss graphic artist Jörg Hamburger, who taught at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts for four decades, with posters from 1962 to 1994. Internationally well recognized typographer Wim Crouwel, on the other hand, was first trained as an artist, and at the end of his career appointed director of an art museum (Boijmans van Beuningen).
