This right here is the BEST feeling for those of us who verbally process. My friendship with @caesmom is the perfect example of true friendship. She is the most introverted person I know while I’m her #emotionalsupporthuman and to know she allows me to work through something verbally is the safest feeling. I know it’s mostly because she tunes me out until my final thought or points gets reached 😂 but I will NEVER have to worry about her judging me. Those of us who verbally process need this time. We need this safe space. And there is a HUGE difference between someone who’s an air hog vs someone who’s working through something. So many times, the verbose are told to monitor their talk time. We are seen as aggressive or insensitive to others. Trust me when I tell you, we 100% are monitoring our talk time. Like, we could be WAAAAAAY worse and when others tell us we need to be “mindful” or we need to “listen more” or we need to ”talk less,” what we hear is “you don’t matter.” Now let’s stay there for a moment, shall we? As an organizational leader, we have to have the agility to recognize when someone is stuck on themselves and when they’re processing. When you instruct others to talk less, you’ve either negated their value or you have squelched their creativity. If you can’t adapt your personal need for calm or be comfortable with your team and all of their personalities and needs, maybe leadership isn’t the right pathway. #leadership #neurodiversity #teamwork #positiveworkculture #educationalleadership

It's still hard to discuss mental health at work. Even though we know that strong mental health plays a key role in how motivated and inspired we feel in our jobs. One way to make discussing it easier is by asking "how are you handling the expectations of the job?". This simple question, followed by a signal that it is safe to share, can open important doors. 🚪Door 1: Helps to identify unrealistic expectations negatively impacting mental health. Unrealistic expectations of ourselves and unrealistic expectations from others create immense pressure and lead to unnecessary stress and anxiety. This actually makes it LESS likely for folks to get high quality work done, or if they do, burnout is soon to follow. You can signal that it is safe to talk about unrealistic expectations by sharing how you've felt when dealing with unrealistic expectations at work in the past. 🚪Door 2: Finds creative solutions to make expectations more achievable. The right stretch expectations can push people to their limit without breaking them. These expectations become the catalyst for resilience instead of the reason for a mental health breakdown. Signal it is safe to find creative solutions by inviting the other person to discuss trade-offs. Specifically, what are the trade-offs for changing expectations and making them more realistic. Shout out to Care Dental - Camrose for making my dreaded dental appointment so light-hearted and fun. I HATE going to the dentist. My teeth are crooked, some are rotated, and now they are getting old. My hygenist gave me the most PAINLESS cleaning I have EVER experienced! This day was one of many changes at the oldest standing hotel on the Oregon coast. After nearly forty years under Sally Ford’s and Goody Cable’s loving persistent stewardship, the future of the iconic 111 year-old Sylvia Beach Hotel now lies in the capable hands of VIP Hospitality Group. Additionally, by her own choosing, it was General Manager Cyd Cannizzaro’s last day with us.
