This post is gonna be raw & real. Take from it what serves you best. As I type this, right now, there are 7 people in my close proximity circle that have cancer. SEVEN!! Active cancer. Some of them are facing a realistic journey of “heading home” …. as in, leaving their earthly bodies. I HAVE to believe that there is some great answer for this; some great healing behind this. I am an extremely spiritually guided woman with a strong foundation of God. The voice I keep hearing so loudly is find peace. We all need peace. Peace starts within. Find that harmony within ourselves & let it ripple out … everywhere … across the states … across the oceans & seas … across the countries. Globally. If you feel like this is an impossible task, try it. Even if it is for just 1 hour, find peace. Our attitudes, behaviors & actions DO have a direct impact on our planet on a cellular level. Practice compassion, kindness & forgiveness. Until our human race fully embraces this concept, let’s keep a small piece of our heart open for CL, DP, GE, JJ, JM, MM, RS ❤️🩹 Namaste. God Bless. We can't fix it all, but we can work in our own lives for the things that matter the most. My paternal grandparents were organic farmers (before there was such a thing) and peace activists. They were concerned with the women's movement, the civil rights movement, and environmental issues, but most of their energy went into antinuclear work. They practiced peace, and they took action for what they believed in. Debates and different viewpoints were encouraged and respected. As a child, I spent my summers connected to the land and animals at our family farm, soaking up their teachings of acting, being engaged, and helping people. It wasn't enough to think and talk about it. We had to do something too. Compassion and tolerance for the "other" were at the heart of their peace work. My Papaw, southern grandfather, taught me there was always a way to find common ground. "Start with what is true about what the other person is saying, not what you disagree with. Build from there". The peace that passes all understanding. Later in life, when I discovered and practiced compassion in Buddhism, my Paps teachings went even deeper. Practicing compassion puts us in that place of finding common ground. it's profound practice and very effective. Listening with compassion invites us to see another person's experience without our baggage, allowing them to share from their heart. To do this, we must maintain our peaceful center. This is why we practice and pray. We can find common ground and generate peaceful, healing ways forward when we listen with compassion. I see this all the time in my couple's work. Compassion and peace heal. I invite you to reflect on where you have created change. In what ways to generate compassion? Where are you sowing peace? As its Revolutionary Artist and Minister of Culture, Emory Douglas established the visual identity of the Black Panther Party during the Civil Rights era and inspired many to action through his iconic work. And after the Party disbanded, he continued his graphic illustration of global political issues. SFS Parent and Photographer @brodylee met artist/activist Emory Douglas at his San Francisco home years ago. After the photo shoot, Douglas presented him with these prints which he has generously donated to the School. "What better place for these than at SFS?" remarked Brody.
