El pasado 8 de mayo se cumplieron 100 años del nacimiento de Sofia Imber a quien entre otras cosas le debemos la creación del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Caracas inaugurado en 1974, y que llegó a convertirse en un lugar de encuentro por excelencia, al punto que me atrevo a afirmar que hasta el más distraído de los asistentes a sus inauguraciones debe recordar el poder de convocatoria que tenía, allí podía verse desde el presidente de la república hasta todos los artistas venezolanos sin distinción alguna. Gracias a su conocimiento y relaciones la señora Imber nos permitió disfrutar de maravillosas exposiciones de Francis Bacon, Henry Moore, Robert Rauschemberg, Paul Klee, Oskar Kokoshka, Victor Vasarely, Fernando Botero, asi como de los venezolanos Jesus Soto, Carlos Cruz Diez, Marisol Escobar y Alejandro Otero entre muchos otros. 🖼️ EXPOSITION Pierre Magistretti – médecin et neuroscientifique suisse – a choisi ÉTÉ APRÈS LA PLUIE (1993) de la célèbre artiste Emily Kam Kngwarray, pour venir en miroir de MONTANA (1947), une œuvre du peintre expressionniste Oskar Kokoschka conservée au @kunsthauszuerich. Both paintings depict a landscape, one in Switzerland, the other in Australia. In AFTER RAIN SUMMER, the lack of form leaves us wide open to interpretation. Emily Kam Kngwarray’s style is often characterised by abstract motifs representing elements of nature, such as wildflowers and landscapes. Although Emily Kam Kngwarray's work may share certain characteristics with Expressionism, such as subjective expression and the use of vibrant colors, she was not explicitly associated with the European Expressionist movement. 🧑🏼🎨🎨 El reconocido pintor Oskar Kokoshka aseguraba que él había provocado la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Todo comenzó en 1907, cuando Kokoshka se presentó a los exámenes para acceder a la Academia de Bellas Artes de Viena. Tras una serie de duras evaluaciones, Kokoshka fue admitido en la Academia, mientras que otro de los candidatos fue rechazado…su nombre era Adolf Hitler. ⠀ 👀 Armado con una carpeta llena de dibujos, Hitler fue uno de los 113 candidatos, según Canetti, Premio Nobel de Literatura, otro fue Kokoschka. En una primera criba suspendieron a 33, entre los que no se encontraba el futuro dictador, éste dejó escrito en su Mein Kampf, que no le pasaba por la cabeza que pudiera suspender: «Estaba convencido que aprobar sería un juego de niños...cuando recibí el resultado fue como si cayera sobre mí un rayo del cielo». ⠀ 🤯 Kokoshka vivió sus últimos años creyendo que, si hubiera cedido su lugar a Hitler, este no se hubiera convertido en un líder genocida. Highlights from a visit to the Lentos Museum in Linz, Austria. There is a level of discomfort to the collection since most pre 1938 paintings were acquired from Wolfgang Gurlitt in 1953, a known dealer of Nazi confiscated paintings. The Lentos Museum attempts to address known provenance for each piece and provides a level of transparency. A grimacing Hitler faces the colossal figure of Mussolini, while an indolent cat, embodying France, is supine next to a Phrygian cap: the imperial lion, representing Great Britain, looks away and his curled tail takes on the shape of the pound sterling symbol. A red egg with the bottom cracked open is on the negotiation table. In the distance, Prague is burning. On the back of the canvas the date of Easter 1939 is mentioned, which undoubtedly evokes the invasion of Prague a few weeks earlier. It also reveals the irony of the painting, referring to the tradition which consists in decorating an egg at this time of the year.
