The National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel overwhelms with the sheer amount of material it has. (We were there before it opened and left right before it closed; I was not prepared for that and was starving and dehydrated by the end.) There is so much incredible audio-visual work with primary sources and interviews that was well worth the time #latergram #vacationmode #museumvisit #museum #nationalcivilrightsmuseum #memphis

A museum in honor of the Civil Rights Movement. The powerful demonstration of strength and resilience that would go on to pioneer a ripple effect of change all over the country and even the world. This museum consists of The Lorraine hotel in which the event of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s Death on April 4, 1968 took place. The Civil Rights Movement, all that lead to it and all that came from it (and what continues to come from it) changed the entire course of history as we know it. A vision, a mission, a story to be told for the rest of time. To say I felt honored to have basked in the history of one of the most prolific civil rights leaders is an understatement; To say I feel honored to be able to enjoy the fruits of the labor of my ancestors and ALL that fought for my freedom is an understatement. Privileged, grateful, PROUD to stand in the essence of those who shook the nation, the world even, seems more fitting. I didn’t get to take the full tour of The National Civil Rights Museum but if I felt even a sliver of the emotional attachment I embodied just standing in the front, I could only imagine what the whole tour would provide. Being there and seeing people from all walks of life, old and young, black and white, parents sharing the knowledge amongst their children, and all taking a moment to really take in and connect to our history truly was a heartwarming sentiment to how far we’ve come, irregardless of how much farther we need to go. The history of the Lorraine Hotel and Memphis, Tennessee as a whole is astonishing. This is a Must-Do if you’re ever visiting 🤍 ————————————— 🚘 Travel Log: Road Trip | 24 Hours in Memphis • Activity- Museum • Name- National Civil Rights Museum • Address- 450 Mulberry St, Memphis, TN 38103 #nationalcivilrightsmuseum #drmartinlutherkingjr #history #civilrights #travel #activities #travelblogger #roadtrip @ncrmuseum

𝗞𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝘁 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺! 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 #amerikatip #vakantieamerika #amerikaroadtrip #amerikavakantie #amerika #amerikareis #droomreis #rondreisamerika #rondreis #amerikaspecialist #styleintravel #amerikatips #amerikarondreis #roadtrip #roadtripamerika #weknowthestates #goamerika #verrereizen #memphis #mustbememphis #tennessee #tnsoundsperfect #nationalcivilrightsmuseum #nationalcivilrightsmuseummemphis #lorrainemotel #martinlutherking #civilrightsmovement #civilrights

🌟 Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Lorraine Motel 🌟 As we approach the anniversary of Dr. King's assassination on April 4, 1968, we reflect on his enduring legacy and the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice. During our spring break trip this year, we had the chance to visit the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, where this tragic event occurred. Dr. King was in Memphis to support striking sanitation workers who were demanding better working conditions and fair treatment. His commitment to economic justice and civil rights brought him to the Lorraine Motel, specifically room 306, where his life was tragically cut short amidst concerns and threats to his safety. The night before his assassination, Dr. King delivered his famous "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech at the Mason Temple in Memphis. This speech, often referred to as his last speech, included powerful and prophetic words about his vision for a better future, despite the challenges ahead. Let us honor Dr. King's memory by continuing to stand up for what is right and striving for a world where all are treated with dignity and respect. @ncrmuseum #MLK #CivilRights #Equality #LorraineMotel #NationalCivilRightsMuseum #Inspiration #Legacy #History #MemphisTN #BlackHistoryMonth #MLKDay #AssassinationOfMLK #Room306 #IveBeenToTheMountaintop #Justice #SocialJustice #HumanRights #Activism #Memphis #Tennessee #SpringBreak #Travel #Photography #BlackAndWhitePhotography #LorraineMotelSign [Photos: The iconic balcony, hotel sign, and wall sign of the Lorraine Motel, now part of the National Civil Rights Museum, where Dr. King stood for justice.]

From Little Rock, AR, we went back to Memphis, TN, to check off a few things we didn’t have time for on our previous visit when we went to Sun Records, Graceland, Beale Street, the Bass Pro Shop Pyramid, and the Peabody Hotel to see the famous ducks (The Long Way Home, part 2, entries #77-80). This time, our first stop was the Lorraine Motel where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on the balcony outside his room on April 4, 1968. A large wreath hangs from the balcony by his room’s door on the second floor, and two period cars, replicas of the cars that were there at the time of the shooting (a 1959 Dodge Royal with lime-green fins and a white 1968 Cadillac) are parked below. Standing in this spot looking up at room 306 made me wonder how this event changed the course of history and what things would be like today if he hadn’t been shot. The Lorraine Motel was converted into the National Civil Rights Museum in 1991. Walking through the very interesting exhibits I was struck by how much the Civil Rights Movement has achieved, but even more by how much is left to accomplish. The museum is really well done and we learned a lot, especially about the beginnings and the organization of the Civil Rights Movement. The walkthrough ends by Dr. King’s room, set up in such a way that visitors can both see the balcony from the inside looking out, and take a peek inside the room he stayed in on that fatal day. Room 306 was never rented again and was turned into a memorial, preserved to look like it did the night he was shot. From the museum we drove to Beale Street, “Home of the Blues.” We had visited this iconic street before, but this time we grabbed a table at the famous B.B. King’s Blues Club and sat down for some drinks and dinner. The music was amazing and we kept ordering more food and drinks just so we could stay longer to listen to the different performers and to people-watch. It was so fun to observe the diverse crowd which included tourists from all over the world, but also locals coming in to catch their favorite musicians, and groups celebrating birthday parties. We had a great time but, sadly, eventually ran out of things to order so we left.

Happy #FreedomFriday On this first day of #WomensHistoryMonth I want to recognize Rosa Parks. Ms Parks was known as the #MotheroftheCivilRightsMovement when she refused to go to the back of the bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Ms Parks was arrested for her activism and it launched a city wide Bus boycott. Ms Parks actions and the subsequent boycott led to change and wider coverage on the treatment of Black people throughout the South and this country. During Black History Month, HAI wants to highlight impactful museums and exhibits that feature African American history and stories. Today, we highlight the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee! The exterior of the Lorraine Motel, which now houses the museum, remains largely unchanged from how it looked on April 4, 1968, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated on the motel’s balcony. The interior, however, could not be more different from what it was in 1968. The Museum exhibits document Black history in the United States from slavery to current times in brutally honest detail. The context is necessary to understanding the danger faced by civil rights activists – speaking up against Jim Crow policies or trying to vote could be fatal. Every document, artifact, and video builds to an emotional crescendo when visitors come to the room where Dr. King stayed in the Lorraine Motel, which is much as he left it in 1968, and the balcony where he died. After the Museum tells visitors an unflinching story of tragedy, violence, and, most importantly, the continuing hope for a more equal and fair society, seeing Dr. King’s room is an affecting experience. This emotional impact could not be achieved if the Museum was housed elsewhere, and there are few museums that utilize location to the same effect. The Lorraine Motel is the perfect building to house the artifacts, tell the stories, and carry forward into the present the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement. #history #historiansofinstagram #archives #archivistsofinstagram #museums #nationalcivilrightsmuseum #smithsonian #civilrightsmovement #iamaman #martinlutherking #southernchristianleadershipconference #lorrainemotel #museumexhibits #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #memphis #mlk

I’m obsessed with Black History EVERY DAY which is why I love that I get to regularly visit the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis Tennessee. The Museum is located at the Lorraine Motel where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was assassinated.  It houses a comprehensive and factual production of the African American experience in America. It is where I am fortunate to co-facilitate the C-Suite initiative program with Dr. Janet Taylor, Ryan Jones and Veda Ajamu, where business leaders bring their teams for a day and a half offsite experience designed to enhance their understanding of equity and solutions for eradicating inequity in the organizations they lead. On our visit this week, we stood in the very spot where Dr. King was gunned down; and, inside a replica of the Birmingham jail where he penned his famous letter - both indescribable experiences to feel his presence and commitment to the work of equality. What better way to kick off and honor Black History Month. If you haven’t been, it is well worth the visit. #MyHistoryIsBlackHistory #BlackHistoryIsAmericanHistory #NationalCivilRightsMuseum #NCRM #LorraineMotel #BlackHistoryMonth #bhm2024

Remembering the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on his federal holiday. While Martin Luther King Jr. is always on the third Monday of January, this year it actually falls on the date of his birthday, January 15, which makes this year extra special. . As I do with every other year, I pay tribute to the leader of the Civil Rights Movement. And in doing so, am posting photos from my visits to the National Civil Rights Museum @ncrmuseum in Memphis and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington DC. I also have visited other MLK sites across the country, including the MLK National Historic Park in Atlanta. However, the photos I took are far outdated. The last photo was taken at the famous graffiti alley in Boise. . So if you’ve seen these photos before, I apologize for posting again once more. . . . #MartinLutherKingJrDay2024, #MLKDay, #StoneofHope, #nationalcivilrightsmuseum, #LorraineMotel, #VisitMemphis, #MLKMemorial, #civilrightsmovement, #NobelPrize, #visitboise
