Highland Bookshop Book Review: The Hollow Sea By Annie Kirby When Scottie, struggling with infertility and her own identity, flees her relationship, she ends up in the North Western island of St Hia. As the troubled history of the island reveals itself, Scottie finds herself drawn into the old myths, and feels somehow connected. While this is Kriby’s debut novel, the reader wouldn’t know it. The Hollow Sea is an incredibly compulsive read, well paced, moving seamlessly from past and present with a clever twist. Her writing moves like a storm across the page, beautiful, powerful and carrying the reader in its wake. The landscape, as much as her characters feel alive. As to the characters themselves, Scottie is complex but amiable. Her pain and grief are palpable as she comes to terms with who she is. While Thordis is standoffish much like her story, she slowly reveals herself to the reader, and in the end, the story is richer for it. The only detraction present is perhaps the rather dated ideas of witchcraft. For something set so contemporarily, it's difficult to imagine some of the perceptions given to the supporting cast when it comes to witchery. That said, the relationship between locals and environmentalists seems authentic and drawn from true experience on all parts. All that said, this is a story of North Western Atlantic myth. Selkies and mermaid myths lurk beneath the churning surface leaving the reader uncertain of what is real and what is imagined. All these folk tales are grounded in the more contemporary issues of fertility and identity. Scottie isn’t trying to find herself, she is struggling to become whole again, and better understand what that means for her. In all, a wonderful story, capturing the toss, churn and allure of the glittering sun reflected on an inky blue sea. The Caribbean Mermaid 🐚 🌺 This mythical creature is a challenging being to study in the wild, as the Caribbean has had various influxes of people from around the world over the centuries. All of them with their own myths, blending the tales from their past with the environment they found themselves in the present. Modern myths are composite creatures that embody the mixing of historical events, spiritual beliefs, and the physical biome in which people exist. 🐚🧜♀️ In my depiction of a mermaid who swims in the waters surrounding Jamaica, I wanted to include this idea of gold in her glittering scales and an effervescent translucency that gives her an ephemeral nature. Much like a myth, she’s half imagined and half real. 🌞🎨Prints are available in my bio 🩵🧚♀️

Constellations/Magic associated w celestial bodies/Myths and legends about the moon or stars/Myths in WIP - I shared Ro and Cylas’s constellation scene last month, so here’s part II of Monday’s aurora scene. Buckle up for some myth & folk 101, kids. When we last left our heroes, Cylas had managed to tear Ro from the sight of the northern lights at the window before she got frostbite and was warming her up by the fire. Now these two unbridled nerds, riding high on their recent intimacy, are engaging in that most seductive of courtship rituals: comparative mythology. Context: -The Tiberon were a great civilization of old -Catheria was formed by uniting the Katharjan language family speaking peoples, willingly or otherwise -Elivnyr, Farhold, and Valemannia are kingdoms far to the north -The Vashan are a people north of the Outlands -Isola and Ysorja, sisters, are Cylas’s friends/neighbors -Béodyn is a fertility festival in late spring -The Hawk line is cursed, unable to move on once they’ve shuffled off the mortal coil Fav character in WIP - Cylas and I go way back. My poor, sweet boy is trying so hard here not to let himself hope too much, come on too strong and freak Ro out, or spiral with anxiety over losing his newfound happiness. What makes the world you created unique/fav genre to write and why - I hope you like regionally and temporally variable folklore and folklife, complete with cultural exchange and diffusion, because this is folk fantasy with an emphasis on the folk. More than just scenery and ambiance, these folkways shape the characters’ worldviews and infuse even their most mundane tasks. No Modern American Teen Psyches in vaguely Medieval-Early Modern Fashion here. Similarly, no monocultures, “common speech”, or “elvish” and ancient texts translated on the spot aren’t totally coherent and don’t rhyme. Art that forces you to think about a specific issue, is not art, it is propaganda. this is one of the criteria for determining art that Immanuel Kant put into words. And I have to say, I do agree with him. If I force you to think about certain issues, which I feel are important, I am not leaving you to make up your own mind about it, I am not leaving you the freedom of choice. And art is, above anything else, free. It has to be created in freedom and it has to be looked at by the free viewer. The viewer has to be allowed the freedom to make up her own mind about the image, and not feel pressured into anything. That said, how can we ignore the plight of our beautiful plant that we have been so generously given? Because if we kill the planet, we kill ourselves. We don't need to save the planet, we need to save ourselves. By saving ourselves, we will automatically save our planet. This painting presented me with a huge problem - I sort of knew what I wanted to paint, but couldn't quite get it to work. 🌵 Desert Dragons 🐉 The Sonoran Desert houses a mangerie of reptilian beings. The Gila monster being one of my favorite. They’re tank like lizards with black and gold speckled bodies and a horribly venomous bite. ✨Trivia: When they strike, they hold onto their prey for at least ten minutes, releasing toxins that helped inspired the popular drug Ozempic…. ✨-The art is inspired by the Egyptian sand dragon who would rob the dusted pyramids in search of the treasure buried with pharaohs. The Gila monster is the closest thing I can find to the sand dragon counterpart in the deserts of North America. A bit smaller, but just as dangerous ⚔️ 🐉 🔥 Have a mythical weekend friends! Shift to the golden lands of baked desert sand 🏜️ - this week I’ve been polishing another round of editing Loreland (a big medieval bestiary with @pagestreetpublishing ) and exploring the desert after work on a horse with no name. He’s a bit of a biter, but there’s no need to blame. I’m happy to know him and brush his long mane 🦄 - the desert around the Superstition Mountains lies to the east of Phoenix Arizona. It’s filled with old cowboy lore from the gold rush days. Legends say these mountains hold gold so sure, it has inspired generations of prospectors to this day to venture into the rocky valleys of this wilderness…. 🌞 ✨ ☠️

🌞 the noble phoenix 🐦🔥 After stumbling across a few desert dragons, I wanted to illustrate their mythical foe. The Phoenix is a creature whose roots grow back thousands of years into Egyptian Myth. A culture that holds many of the oldest archeological record of belief systems we still harbor today surrounding the zodiac, Christianity, and alchemy. My first introduction to this bird was in The Chamber of Secrets, where it helps defeat the Basilisk. In Pheonix the desert city of Arizona, there live the Gila Monster and Gopher Snake, also worthy enemies of the legendary Pheonix. I’m hoping to coming across one soon… 🏜️ 🐉

The Archer aims, shoots, and pierces the sky! 🌌 - April I’m working on some golden zodiac for a tarot deck (they are deeply connected). And wanted to share the Sagittarius as I have met a few of them who are really cool humans, and why not get a bit witchy as we all just collectively celebrated a solar eclipse last week. CONNECTION ⭐️ 🔥 🌎 Each of the 12 zodiac has an element, planet, and of course Roman god associated with it. In this photo album you’ll see the ancient alchemical symbol for fire, and the planet Jupiter. 🌞 The star chart on slide 6 depicts one of the oldest Egyptian carvings of the zodiac called the Dendera zodiac, made in 50 BCE. This is thought to be the oldest known map of the astrological sky and constellations of this time-period. Now housed comfortably with baguette and espresso at the Louvre in Paris where many other magical artifacts await. 🌞

There is to be an eclipse today and there is according to an article I’ve just read in Bari Weiss’ excellent Free Press @thefreepress a wave of hysteria , an overprotective instinct amongst school administrators. Instead of seeing this rarity as a moment of wonder , children are apparently being kept home . Countering this hovering instinct , astrophysicist Ilana Macdonald exclaims the amazement of it all describing today’s event as:”it feels very medieval . It’s like there’s a dragon eating the sun and we have to run away”. Reading this I recalled my own boyhood terror of an eclipse . My mother was a Hysteric of Sarah Bernhardt caliber . In my boyhood an eclipse similar to today’s was anticipated, my mother’s terror so great , she headed to a convent , her brood in tow , packed in the backseat but forced into the footwells . We were all in terror , certain to go blind , a great dragon indeed was coming . Obviously we survived the dragon and my mother , as usual , acted as if nothing cataclysmic had occurred . I however did what I always did , went into creating my own world , my own explanation. I created a world called Inner Earth ( too much Tolkien I suppose) , a universe in which giant pelicans carried the moon and the sun , eclipsing one another as they entered home base , a giant dragon . I created a little book , bound in ever so rich marbled Contact @contactpaperofficial paper , and pretentiously and piously introduced my fantasy - even then I was an ardent Catholic NeoMedievalist. I hope at some point to recreate these childhood drawings , self publishing old with new , but for today, in anticipation of that dragon 🐉, these few. Denver THE SEA 💧 This painting is “Aqua”, a Caribbean creature made from the saltwater of this turquoise sea. The shapes in this work we made listening to the echoes of waves in a sea cave, where I would forms go and play my ukulele. The metal feet have rusted due to my sea-side shows, so I’m sending it off to a music doctor. Please send your thoughts and prayers 🙏 🎶 THE TOWER ☁️ -Sometimes late I walk to this abandoned tower and look at the stars reflected in the sea, and think about how easy it is to be overwhelmed by life. I think we all have periods of intense emotional tides, and being alone in places of grand natural beastie illicit these states in a person. I love it- how connected you become to the weather, the tides, and plants and animals you meet when you walk away from your normal life. - finding perspective by loosing perspective lies at the core of artistic pursuit. The Nordic Mermaid 🧜♀️ ❄️ - These sirens live in the Arctic Ocean, with salmon-like scales and a layer of subcutaneous fat to insulate them from the freezing water. - The “Finnar” or “finfolk” are a mermaid species that swim in Nordic Myth. In Old Norse, “finnar” means “to find” and was a term northern Germanic people used to refer to the people who lived in the extreme northern sections of Scandinavia- the Sámi. The Sámi people made boats from seal skin, which would become waterlogged over time. When this happened, they would carry the skin upon their backs, a fear which later is thought to have inspired the Celtic tales of Selkies or “seal people”- the mermaids of the Celtic isles. Justine’s studio is next-door the gallery’s offices inside the Port of Cape Town, so we have the pleasure of experiencing her gentle, wise energy on a daily basis. Justine will talk about the making of her solo exhibition, ‘VIGIL’, currently showing at our Cape Town gallery, in an artist walkabout next Saturday, 6 April. She will discuss her exploration of the Jungian archetypes, confronting the unconscious, and the powerful symbology behind each of the 12 figures in her new series. “I wanted to “catch” the 12 archetypes which resonated with me most as precisely as I could see them in my mind’s eye. I called to them as they ran across the inner landscape: stopping, hiding, moving, gesticulating, glitching out, mirage-like. Once the writing, rough drawings and fast watercolours showed me who they were, I could then form and create them in clay.
