@killowendistillery released their Cask #001 and I was lucky enough to win a ballot to purchase a bottle of this historic release. A mixed mash bill whiskey that is currently non-GI compliant to be called Irish Single Pot Still. Revisions to the GI are on the way but for now, Killowen is happy enough to bottle this at 3 years old authentically & unashamedly! And rightly so! Turfed (instead of peated), aged in 120L PX Sherry Cask, bottled at cask strength at 60.7%. With only 232 bottles, a lot will unfortunately be unopened and flipped but I feel strongly about drinking this and putting liquid to lips to show my support! Dingle's Fifth Single Pot Still Release. The last of the batch series and one that marks an important point in recent #irishwhiskey history. For a time, all Irish Single Pot Still whiskey being made were from one distillery. Dingle came into the industry in 2012 as a craft producer and ushered in a new wave of whiskey producers (and ways of doing things) not long after. I've been following @dingledistillery for a long time and have gone with them on their journey. Now, they have a core release, expansion plans, and could reach new heights. With the end of the batch releases, there's a lot of excitement (and pressure) on what Dingle will be up to next. After all, the Irish whiskey landscape is no longer the same now than when they first released their batch ones! Loving the colours on these @thetyrconnell 10 year olds. The Tyrconnell is a brand previously owned by Watts Distillery which dates back to 1762. It was founded by Andrew Alexander Watt and he named the whiskey after his racehorse that won the 1876 National Produce Stakes under tremendous odds (100:1). The distillery closed abruptly in a riveting fashion in 1921. After years of decline brought about by the prohibition in the US and the first world war, Watt's workers went on strike, locked the distillery, and didn't let him in. He stood on a barrell outside the gates and shouted 'Will you open the gates?' The workers replied 'The gates stay shut!' Then Watt replied 'Shut they are, and shut they shall remain!' He then subsequently closed the distillery. The brand has been revived by Cooley (now owned by Beam Suntory) and they have been releasing finished double distilled single malts under it. These 10-year olds are great examples of Irish whiskey's versatility and probably a bit ahead of its time more than 10 years ago (bottled at 46%, finished in Sherry, Port, Madeira, and single cask releases). @aberlour a'bunadh is simply hard to beat. One of the best value sherried whisky in the market. Meaning 'of the origin' or 'the original' in Gaelic, A'Bunadh is probably the longest running cask strength batched release with the first batch launched in 1997. Batch 60 is bottled at 60.3%, released in 2017. On the nose, Christmas pudding, nutmeg, cinnamon, lemom zest. The palate is as it says on the tin, heavy sherry influence. Dark fruits, rainsins and dates. Mint, pepper, more dates. The finish is satisfying and warming with a bit of waxy bitterness and a bit dry. Some high quality poitin coming out of Ireland. This one here from @killowendistillery, The Cuige Collection, is probably the best! The distillate is made up of 50% peated barley, 21.6% unmalted, 14.2% oat which was malted and peated onsite this tiny distillery, 7.1% wheat, and 7.1% rye. It was then rested in 5 different casks which held 5 different beers from Ireland's 5 historic provinces. Duff went into a cask which held IPA from @obrotherbrewing. Feeling any #mondayblues? Around a year ago, this #irishsinglepotstill was released and flew off the shelves immediately (a sign of things to come). I was lucky enough to get it then and I've been nursing this bottle since. I'd say it has improved even more given some oxidation - on a blind tasting, I don't think anyone can guess that this is a 7yo statement. For those not familiar (or need a refresher), this is vatting of 7-22 year old whiskeys matured in bourbon, sherry, and madeira casks. Bottled at a cask strength of 58.7%. After some cocktail posts, we're back to our original programming... Irish Whiskey... this time is the dark and myterious blend of double and triple distilled peated single malts blended with soft grain whiskey... The Dark Silkie from @sliabhliagdistillers Took a while to open this bottle but it's timely given another batch was just released recently. This bottle, 65/210 of batch 1/21, is bottled at a not-so-shy 64.3% abv. Lots of orchard fruits, caramel apple, stewed pears, then it gets sweeter - honey, burnt caramel, borderline milk chocolate. Great mouthfeel. The smoke offers another layer but not over-powering. Great balance. A bit of salinity on the finish but felt a bit short for me. Did it feel like it's over 64%? NOT AT ALL! I've tasted alcohol in way lower abv whiskeys. This is a great release from Donegal! Commemorative First Release (1494) from @lindoresabbeydistillery What's being commemorated? Lindores Abbey is recognised as the location of the first recorded distillation of scotch whiskey dating back 1494 - more than 500 years ago! In 2017, a modern distillery was built and distillation once again found its way there. Newest addition to the @thomondgate_limerickwhiskey departed spirits of Limerick series is Bold & Brave. Dedicated to a red-headed young woman, known as the 'Brazen Head', who fought to defend Limerick from the seige of 1690. She was eventually captured and beheaded but her character inspired the future generations of Limerick women to stand up for their beliefs, as equals with their brothers, sons, and husbands. Bottle 77 of this release has been captured and will be beheaded soon. History in the making! #sidebyside of @dingledistillery Batch 1 and Batch 6. First and Final batch release from Dingle distillery to see its evolution (not the whiskey but the distillery). Batch 1 is a little over 3 years aged in boubon released in 2016 and Batch 6 is recsntly released matured exusively in port casks. Batch 1 is young and you could tell it. The Dingle DNA I've grown to love is prominent at an early age albeit a bit spry, prickly, and hot. Batch 6 is an amazing showcase of how versatile this DNA could be. I've had my first sip and I couldn't place my finger on it. I love port whiskeys and this one hits the spot from the start! On my second sip, the Dingle DNA comes more to the fore - pears, apples, caramel, raisins, then the port influence show - dried cranberries, chocolate, sweet oak. Going back to batch 1, the lightness of the bourbon matured distillate is evident but the DNA is unmistakable. I think I could tell a Dingle in any blind tasting. It's great to see how far the distillery has come. Having been able to visit it as well, it's amazing what they could do in that tiny place. Kudos to everyone working there and have worked in the distillery! Anyone else opened their bottle yet? The @bushmillsirl Causeway Collection 2021 dropped yesterday and @celticwhiskeydublin delivered the next day so I can enjoy this as my first Friday dram! I've been a fan of the Causeway Collection since it's first release last year. This Single Malt is about 10 years old which matured first in oloroso sherry and bourbon and recasked in Sauternes and bottled at a cask strength of 56.3 ABV. How was it? On the nose, jasmin and green tea, then peach. On the palate, it's syrup-y. Nice body. Oak, strawberry jam, buttery scones, and warming spices.
