I made a promise to myself a long time ago that no matter how I felt on the inside, I would always make an effort with my appearance. This is why, you’ll probably not be able to tell that this photo was taken about 2 weeks after I’d given birth to my youngest and about 2 weeks and 1 day after I’d split up with his dad. I’m not saying that a bit of lipstick helped me heal from my c-section more quickly or that it can mend a broken heart, it won’t. What it does do is remind me to look after myself. It reminds me that I matter. As a solo mother and a teacher, so much of my life is about meeting the needs of other people. My daily mini-pamper sessions are often the only guaranteed time I have for myself. I really cherish that time because it’s a daily reminder that as well as Mama and Miss, I’m Naomi too. 8.30 am. First day of half term and the Easter weekend and little people and big people were not happy. Prior to having the skills I now have this would’ve resulted in a MASSIVE ARGUMENT. BUT IT DIDN’T (There was frustration on everyone’s part, but we moved through it) And here’s how I managed to do it…. I recognised and reminded myself that I didn’t have to be perfect and neither did the first day of half term. We are humans and these moments will happen. I felt the sadness and frustration. I checked in with the real facts (not trying to put a positive spin or expect myself to feel grateful) and processed how I and others in the house may be feeling based on facts. Everyone has space, literally all four of us went into different rooms to be able to regulate. This wasn’t actually planned it just happened and helped, so something I am reflecting on whilst writing. Consideration about conversations in the near future (not when everyone is in their fight/flight) from what could be learnt and reflected on in both mine and the kids point of view. Here is the game changer - considering how far we have come as a family and in my own reaction to this situation. AGAIN THIS ISNT THINKING POSITIVELY - THESE ARE FACTS. Facts which in this moment of fight and flight my brain wants to forget as from this point we can grow and that’s scary. This situation lasted minutes. My mood (feelings I had that are completely understandable) changed within an hour which before would have lasted ALL DAY. Other wins from this morning I am sharing the change - something my brain and nervous system really fears. I have shared a picture of me in my dressing gown (this gets to be ok). This works. This changes lives. This working is blooming hard (and continues to be) but it’s blooming worth it. I share for those who want to believe life can feel different. Diastasis Recti (DR) is the gap between the muscles that run down the front of your stomach. Everyone gets a DR during pregnancy to allow space for their baby to grow inside them. (How incredible is our body!) After you have your baby ideally we want the DR (the gap) to close up and the muscles to come back together. BUT These are two muscles so there will always be some gap. For some mums, this gap could be more than a finger width in places. And that’s ok. What matters is that you have a fully functioning, strong core with strong stomach muscles to support the gap so it can heal as much as it is going to, stay healed and you can be strong. I will talk about DR in my Pelvic floor workshop next week. You need a healed DR to have a strong pelvic floor and vice versa. So it is best to talk about them at the same time. I can humbly say that I am blessed with 3 empathetic, loving, and hardworking children a mother could ever dream of. Does the above statements make me, “A perfect Mum?” Definitely not!! 💫From the moment I knew I was going to become a mum, I began getting worried about everything and continue to do so till date. I love my children more then my life and the hardest thing for me is to see my children in pain. ⏰For a long time, I struggled believing that whatever I did as a mum was not good enough. ❓Time and again, I realise that I do not have an answer to the questions that my children pose before me. My journey to being, “A perfect mum” is an ongoing journey. Sharing with you some of my tips as I work towards this PERFECTIONISM: 💯% I would like to be perfect Mum, but I am human and am bound to make mistakes. I acknowledge my errors and continue developing new skills that I can use to help my children. 🌿I acknowledge that I need adapt to my children’s lives while trying to adapt to my own life. ☂️I seek assistance from my husband, extended family and other professionals. 🎧Prioritise my own wellbeing so that my children can reap the benefits. ☎️Reminding myself to always be approachable. Intra Abdominal Pressure 🍾 IAP is the pressure within the abdominal cavity that assists proximal control. Some common tendencies in pregnant or postpartum athletes is a pressure “out” or pressure “down” ⬅️Pressure “out”➡️ is when our breath and IAP goes out into the linea alba (the band of connective tissue that runs down the front of your abdomen), this can create coning or doming of the midline ⬇️Pressure “down”⬇️ is where the pelvic floor is absorbing that pressure which may cause leaking, pelvic pain or pressure Pressure is certainly not a bad thing, it is just something that needs to be understood and managed in pregnant and postpartum athletes as to help long term pelvic health Mismanagement of pressure can contribute to: ➡️ pelvic floor disfunction ➡️ urinary incontinence ➡️ pain ➡️ distasis recti & hernias ➡️ pelvic organ prolapse So what can you do? ✅ Learn how to correctly breathe ✅ Learn how to better distribute IAP ✅ Learn how your body reacts to certain movements and stimuli A great way to start is by connecting your breath, core & pelvic floor. Inhale, completely relax your pelvic floor & stomach. Exhale, engage your pelvic floor, bring your core muscles in and up. Nice and slow and controlled while you teach your mind muscle connection the basics It is really more about learning how to better distribute pressure and manage it on an individual level as every athlete is different and has had different levels of fitness prior to pregnancy and/or different birth experiences.
