My mother grew up hearing stories about the time they played a game against a white minor league Braves team and the Valdosta Trojans defeated them đ€Ș â â â â â â â â â I loved this book. This is a non-fiction middle grade book, but I think it's great for anyone interested in learning more about Black people you haven't heard about who made a great impact. â â â â â â â â â Some of my main highlights from this book: âŸïž People were able to succeed partly because of colorism and light skinned privilege as they could pass as white and get into spaces that weren't accessible to darker Black people âŸïž The historical context we got helped better understand how baseball was being affected by certain historical events âŸïž Black players went to play in countries like the DR because they got paid more and weren't seen or treated as a minority. âŸïž Really makes you think about the positives and negatives of integration in not just baseball but society âŸïž Effa Manley was a force to be reckoned with â â â â â â â â â âTruly, if Effaâs storyâof forging her path in a male-dominated industry while tirelessly advocating for both Black baseball and Black peopleâreveals nothing else, it teaches us this: We are more powerful than we know.â *Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy! My feelings about this book are a little bit complicated. I picked this one up for #middlegradeMarch, but I ended up reading it in April, and then I waited to share about it until Sophia (my thirteen-year-old) read it as well so that I could get her perspective before posting. This book is written from the perspective of Johannesâa free dog who lives in an urban park by the sea. When I saw that Ethan Hawke was the audiobook narrator, I was sold. I have loved him since I wasnât much older than Sophia, first in Dead Poetâs Society, then in the film adaptation of Great Expectations, and then in his modern adaptation of Hamlet. (Speaking of, I need to go back and rewatch that and see how it has held up over the past twenty-five years. đ) Hawke puts 110% of himself into this audiobook narration. His narration is SO GOOD. Honestly? I thought the book itself was kind of overrated. đ It was perfectly fine, kind of weird and mystical at points, and I didnât fall in love with the characters outside of Johannes, and I really think I only loved him because I love Ethan Hawke. đ I waited to post about it because I wanted to sit with my feelings and also to see what Sophia, an enormous dog and animal lover, thought of it. This is definitely a book for people who deeply love and appreciate animals, and Iâll be brutally honest and say that Iâm not sure I really fit that category. đ However, my animal-loving daughter liked the book but didnât love it. She also thought some parts were just a bit odd. But she did like Johannes a lot, and she thought the physical copy was gorgeous too. I also thought the physical book itself was beautifulâsprinkled throughout the book are two-page full color spreads with Johannes lovingly and carefully added in by artist Shawn Harris into classical landscapes. Itâs one Iâm glad I read, and I think Sophia was too, even if it wasnât an absolute favorite. Ethan Hawkeâs narration made the whole thing worth it for sure. Would love to know othersâ thoughts about this one!

WWW Wednesday - March and April 2024 . Daughters of Eville, books 1-5 â Chanda Hahn . Tore through most of this series in audiobook form - it is intriguing! A very unique twist on traditional fairy tales, and that's saying something considering how many times that trope has been done. I love how all of the characters, including the textbook Evil Witch, are complex and have both good and bad qualities. . The Green Ember, books 1-3 â S. D. Smith . This series was recommended to me by an instagram acquaintance (can't remember who, sorry) and it was super adorable! Definitely a calm, cozy read. . The Maid & The Mystery Guest â Nita Prose . I LOVED this series! I don't know if this particular premise and character has been done before, but it is so well done here! I absolutely love how the main character is learning to accept her unique perspective and identity, and the way that the whodunnit story is executed is positively brilliant!! . Artemis Fowl & The Arctic Incident â Eoin Colfer . Re-read this series on a whim because I was shelving it in the school library. It's at least as good as I remembered, and the print book has Elvish symbols on the bottom of every page!! So cool!! . Murder in Postscript & Murder in Masquerade â Mary Winters . Another whodunnit, but in Victorian England with a spunky main character and slow-burn romance brimming in banter. Absolutely love, can't wait for her to write more books! . Echoes of Exodus - Alastair J. Roberts & Andrew Wilson . Another nonfiction! I'm loving this one, although I keep forgetting it exists because it's in ebook form and my library loan keeps expiring xD. Thatâs a wrap on Middle Grade March! (Pretend Iâm posting this 30 days ago!) Maybe because I had my fill of very long novels in January, I decided I wanted to really commit to exclusively middle grade books in March, and except for my audiobook, which was Unraveling (and so good!), I did. And it was so refreshing! I even got to some books Iâve owned for over a decade đ The standouts: đ§ââïž Which Witch?, Eva Ibbotson: The ever-charming Ibbotson does it again with a cast full of wryly drawn characters. 𩮠Matilda Bone, by Karen Cushman: A wonderful return to the world of medieval healing from The Midwifeâs Apprentice. â±ïžThe Egypt Game, Zilpha Keatley Snyder: So perfectly evocative of the joys and interpersonal dynamics of childhood. â”ïž Swallows and Amazons, Arthur Ransome: I donât even like books about boats, and I loved this story of kids sailing around a lake, camping and having adventures. đș A Single Shard, Linda Sue Park: A master class in plotting and so dang moralâI loved it. đ» The Cottage in the Woods, Katherine Coville: Charming! Jane Eyre meets Goldilocks and the Three Bears, which shouldnât work, but really does. đș The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, Joan Aiken: The satirical gothic Victorian middle grade that spawned the genre. đŠ Graylingâs Song, Karen Cushman: So woefully underrated on Goodreads, which utterly baffles me. MGM Prompt: book I missed out on #QOTD : Whatâs a book you missed out on from when you were younger? âïžâïžâïžâïž It appears that the beloved Percy Jackson series has been around forever annnnd Iâm just now getting hip to itđ«Łbut itâs fine thereâs time to catch up lol I first watched the movie adaptation many moons ago and I absolutely loved it! Wasnât too fond of the second movie but I loved that actor. Then I realized that itâs a WHOLE UNIVERSE! From what Iâve read so far, only 2 books, weâre following the 3 friends who are constantly on an adventure somewhere lol I actually really enjoy this set up, it really allows for the stories to be their own in a way but still connected. I will say book 2 was pretty similar to book 1, but then left us with a huge gasp and I immediately placed a hold on book 3 with my library! MAR24 Wrap Up There wasnât one that I didnât enjoy! The star of my March reading was Driving While Black. I have thought about what I learned from reading it so often, and it will definitely be one that stays with me. 5âïž Laughing at My Nightmare was one I was so skeptical of (one that my husband bought for me), but I ended up so endeared to Shane Burcaw. He offered such insight into the frustrations he has faced that never would have occurred to me. He told his story with humor, honesty, and compassion. Iâm so glad I did not take a pass on it like I had been tempted. 4âïž I enjoyed Moon of the Crusted Snow so much that as soon as I finished I ordered the follow up that I learned was just published. That will be in my May stack. 4âïž Hello Beautiful started out a bit shaky for me but had me in tears by the end. 4âïž We Dream of Space was the only middle grade book I managed to squeeze in for #middlegrademarch but it scratched my itch for books about space for the month. I really loved the storyline of each sibling and how their relationship had developed by the end. 4âïž My best reading month of 2024 as far as numbers go, but really itâs all been good reading this year for me. This is a non-fiction middle grade book, but I think it's great for anyone interested in learning more about Black people you haven't heard about who made a great impact. â â â â â â â â â Some of my main highlights from this book: âŸïž People were able to succeed partly because of colorism and light skinned privilege as they could pass as white and get into spaces that weren't accessible to darker Black people âŸïž The historical context we got helped better understand how baseball was being affected by certain historical events âŸïž Black players went to play in countries like the DR because they got paid more and weren't seen or treated as a minority. âŸïž Really makes you think about the positives and negatives of integration in not just baseball but society âŸïž Effa Manley was a force to be reckoned with â â â â â â â â â âTruly, if Effaâs storyâof forging her path in a male-dominated industry while tirelessly advocating for both Black baseball and Black peopleâreveals nothing else, it teaches us this: We are more powerful than we know.â *Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy! So excited to introduce a new literary heroine for you and your kids! A cross between Anne Shirely (Green Gables) and Mary Lennox (Secret Garden), Lucy (Selena Lucy) is imaginative, plucky and full of hopes and dreams. I was smitten by this story of this French-Ojibwe orphan girl who is taken in by the Martin family and the twist is that they live on a remote island in Lake Superior as the father manages the lighthouse there. There is a mystery element here (sheâs constantly searching for a treasured necklace that her father spent his life looking for) which I enjoyed I was so charmed by the Martin family. The author could easily have delved into the âevil adoptive familyâ trope but instead she makes the Martin family realistic and disarming-yes there are siblings that take to Lucy more easily than others-but families are complex and author Johnson doesnât shy away from the reality that adding a new child to your family, despite the best intentions, isnât straightforward. I also appreciated the humanity of Lucy herself: despite her well intentions, she makes a lot of mistakes and sometimes selfishly so. I found her maddening at times, and yet beguiling! I also loved that the Martin family is Anishinaabe and that both the Martin kids and Lucy connect in several ways over their indigenous heritage. And the setting of Lake Superior and historical background of shipwrecks in the early 1900s is striking. In the end, this book is about the notion of family and belonging and I found myself very moved by it all. This would be a great read aloud or individual read for ages 10 and up! This is the second story following the pair and acts as a continuation of âWhere the World Turns Wildâ - if you've not read it, give this post a save and come back once you have, as the review contains some mild spoilers for the first book! Set against the landscape of a failed intervention in the face of human induced ecological breakdown, this is a dytopian middle grade chapter book that leads with hope and the power of liberation. After securing their own freedom from the control of the oppressive city they grew up in, Juniper and Bear catch wind of escalations in their former home. And so ensues a treacherous return trip to share that freedom with those they had to leave behind. Taking a detour from the original, this embraces the use of a dual perspective, hearing about Junipers experience outside the city, contrasted with that of her friend, Etienne from within the city walls. This really allows us to draw comparisons between their experiences and understand the narrative on a more complex level. And forms the basis for deeper discussions around privilege, oppression and varying experiences of people under the same systems, within our own world. It seems quite unthinkable but since I didnât read the books as a child and the film came out right on the cusp of my teen angst years, it passed me by. And it has been one I have been meaning to get to for such a long time but it is incredibly difficult to find it streaming anywhere (without paying for it that is). But after reading Anne of Avonlea for #middlegrademarch, I checked my library and found they had the dvd and so here we are. I finished the film yesterday and absolutely adored it! It has made me love Anne of Green Gables (the book) even more as well. And as with so many things in my life, it feels like it has come at just the moment I needed it. I can see myself watching it over and over again in the years to come. I should probably get my own copy at some point! Now that I have watched the film adaptation, I am going to read the AoGG graphic novel and then I may dive straight into Anne of the Island. I am feeling like I need more Anne in my life at the moment. And in a bit of bookish serendipity, I read the poem âThe Lady of Shalottâ by Alfred, Lord Tennyson this month as well (swipe for a photo of the illustrated edition I read). Little did I remember that Anne quotes the poem and acts it out as a part of the story. That was a lovely intersecting of my reading and watching selections! So now the question is, should I watch any of the other Anne adaptations or just stick with this one? And which of the books, besides the first, is your favorite? When I was 5 an animal specialist came to our house with everything from bunny rabbits to boa constrictors! Then in high school we had a field trip to the Naval Air base where we got free Rita's water ice afterward since it was the first day of spring. đž But I don't think anything can compare to releasing my first book. I know we are half way through April but I still want to toot my own horn. I completed 31 books in March! Thought it was 32 but forgot one was a DNF. Favorites of the month were The Lightning Thief, Nowhere Boy, and Al Capone Does My Shirts. Other stand outs were Wolf Hollow, the Track series, and Premeditated Myrtle. African Town was so emotional and the audio was amazing. I also loved revisiting Keeper of the Lost Cities with the first graphic novel. The group read for @middlegrademarch was The Mona Lisa Vanishes by Nicholas Day. âșïžâșïžâșïžâșïžâșïž/5 for this non-fiction book. Over a century ago in Paris a painting was stolen out of the Louvre and the police were clueless about possible suspects. I loved how the author shared all aspects of the crime and the painting. From the possible thieves, the police detectives, and even da Vinci himself this book is written in a way that will capture kidâs attention. There are some great illustrations throughout. After reading this I donated it to my school library. QOTD: Have you ever been to the Louvre? Did you see the Mona Lisa? My Answer: I went to the Louvre back in 2021. đ: This is now the second book written by @jasminewargabooks that I absolutely love! It blew me away & was my favorite book out of the four I set out to read last month for @middlegrademarch. As the situation in Syria becomes more volatile, Jude & her pregnant mother move to Ohio to live her Uncle & his family. Other Words For Home is novel in verse about a 12 year old Syrian girl as she navigates & adapts to life in foreign America. The rewards & challenges of being an immigrant & straddling two worlds is a common theme that that resonates with so many of us who arenât born in this country. I love Judeâs sweet & brave spirit that makes her a wonderful role model for refugee students. She is often curious & asks a lot of questions. Despite struggling to adjust to a new culture & carrying the weight & responsibility placed upon her, she continues to put one foot in front of the other. Â Other Words For Home is a necessary & hopeful #ownvoice story that is compelling, inspiring, & heartbreaking. It really gets you in the mind of a refugee as they adapt to a new life in search of safety & stability.
