I haven’t picked a book on the WWII period book in a long time and I so enjoyed this book by Lynn Austin. This story involves several storylines with beautifully developed characters that intermingle seamlessly. I couldn’t stop listening, wanting to find out what would happen next. I was excited to see @maliastuckinabook wanted to read it as well, which we buddy read in April. God and Kings chronicles the coming of age of the Prince of Judah, Hezekiah. His father lead the people away from Yahweh and towards the idol Molech. Among all the evil, I loved seeing some return to the Lord and cry out to him. What I enjoyed most was that I’m currently reading about the kings and Psalms in my daily Bible reading. Werbung/gekauftes Exemplar/SuB] Teil 1 der Südstaaten-Saga und bereits auf den ersten Seiten war ich schon mittendrin und gefangen von der Gedankenwelt einer jungen Frau namens Carolin, die aufgrund ihrer Taten mit einem traurigen Ausgang rechnet, dennoch ihre eigene Geschichte und die Gründe dafür festhält. Ich wurde auf eine Reise nach Richmond mitgenommen, in die Zeit von 1853-1865, mitten in den Konflikt zwischen Nord und Südstaaten und dem Versuch, der Sklaverei ein Ende zu setzen. Carolin ist das Leben mit den Sklaven gewohnt, hat eine eigene Mammy namens Tessie, und viele weitere, die sich um Küche, Haushalt und die Plantage kümmern. Doch je älter sie wird, desto mehr fällt ihr auf, was Sklaven zu erdulden haben, wie mit ihnen umgegangen wird, oft gedemütigt werden, ihnen normale Dinge verwehrt werden, weil man sie für eine minderwertige Rasse hält. Nach einem einschneidenden Erlebnis wird sie zu ihren Verwandten nach Philadelphia geschickt, wo sie die andere Seite kennenlernt und die ersten Unruhen, Bewegungen gegen die Sklavenhaltung miterlebt. Überzeugt, das richtige zu tun, reist sie zurück und versucht, sich für die Sklaven einzusetzen. Doch der Krieg bringt große Gewissenskonflikte mit sich. Auf einmal werden Dinge vorausgesetzt und Handlungen verlangt, die sie in eine große Krise stürzen, zumal sie sich unsterblich in einen Befürworter der Sklavenhaltung, Charles St. John verliebt hat. Nur dem verständnisvollen, sanften Eli und ihrer Mammy Tessie ist es zu verdanken, dass sie nach und nach mehr darüber erfährt, was die Bibel über Sklaverei und Ausbeutung sagt. Ohne aufdringlich zu wirken, erzählt er ihr, was er für Erlebnisse mit Gott gemacht hat, wie er sich fühlt, wenn er Gott sein Herz ausschüttet und alles in seine Hände legt, auf seine Führung vertraut. Boek review 👑 Manasse de God van mijn vader Door: Lynn Austin Genre: Christelijke Roman Sterren: ★★★★☆ (4) Storytel 🎧 27-04-2024 tot 28-04-2024 📖 Swipe voor de samenvatting van het boek. 💭 Mijn mening Dit is het 4de boek uit de serie Hizkia/Manasse. Hizkia is overleden en zijn zoon Manasse wordt koning van Juda. Hij ontdoet alles wat zijn vader had rechtgetrokken, laat zich adviseren door verkeerde mensen en draait zich van God af. Ik vond het een erg mooi verwoord gedeelte uit de bijbel. Ik kan me goed voorstellen dat het zo gebeurd zou kunnen zijn. De feiten uit de bijbel zijn overgenomen, daarnaast heeft Lynn Austin er zelf een mooi romantisch verhaal van gemaakt, met veel bijrollen en evengoed de gruwelijkheden die Manasse heeft gedaan erin verwerkt. Ik zag dat het verhaal ook als audioboek op Storytel stond, dus ik besloot om het boek te luisteren ipv te lezen. Zo kon ik ondertussen een puzzeltje doen/ verder met schilderen op nummer. Ik trok dit boek uit m'n pot met boektitels. Dit boek staat al heel lang in m'n kast. Ik kocht de serie ooit via Marktplaats. Op naar deel 5, het laatste boek uit deze serie. Dit boek zit ook in m'n pot, maar ik heb besloten om niet te wachten tot ik 'm trek. 😄 👑 Vroeger dacht ik dat ik koningin kon worden (😆) dat is niet helemaal gelukt, haha. Boek review 🫅🏻 Hizkia God is mijn redding Door: Lynn Austin Genre: Christelijke Roman Stars: ★★★★☆ (4) Gelezen 📚 31-03-2024 tot 06-04-2024 📖 Swipe voor de samenvatting van het boek. 💭 Mijn mening Dit is het derde deel van deze serie over het leven van koning Hizkia, en wordt vervolgd met 2 boeken over het leven van zijn zoon Manasse. In eerste instantie had ik Manasse getrokken uit m'n pot, maar ik had deel 3 van Hizkia nog niet gelezen. Dus toen toch besloten om eerst Hizkia af te ronden en dan verder te gaan met Manasse. Dat was een goede keuze. Ik vond het een mooi boek, beeldend geschreven ook. Ik werd meegenomen naar Jeruzalem en naar de oorlogsvoering waarin Juda verzeild raakte. Dit boek stond vooral in het teken van vertrouwen hebben en de Heere God betrekken/laten leiden in je leven en dat Hij voorziet als je op Hem vertrouwd. Dit heeft Hizkia wonderlijk ervaren, ook al had hoogmoed wel het 1 en ander kapot gemaakt. Wat had Jesaja een zware taak als boodschapper van goed maar vooral ook van slecht nieuws. Bijzonder om te lezen hoe hij werd gebruikt voor de boodschappen van de Heere God aan Hizkia. En hoe hij al op mocht schrijven wat er ruim 700 jaar later met de Heere Jezus zou gaan gebeuren. Hizkia, God is mijn redding. Ik heb al zoveel goeds gehoord van haar verhalen dat het me nieuwsgierig maakte. Ik koos dit boek uit omwille van de korte inhoud. Een hoofdpersonage dat verzot is op boeken trekt mij altijd aan. Het verhaal speelt zich af in de jaren ´30. De Grote Depressie is aan de gang en vele mensen worden ontslagen. Zo ook bibliothecaresse Alice. Ze besluit om naar het dorp Acorn in Kentucky te gaan om boeken te doneren en twee weken vrijwilligerswerk te doen, maar dat draait helemaal anders uit. Ik heb heel het boek moeite gehad met het beeld van het dorpje Acorn. Ik kon me er niets bij voorstellen. De huizen hadden nog geen elektriciteit, auto´s waren voor de stadsmensen, het toilet was buiten,... Maar dit beeld van een Amerikaans mijnwerkersdorp uit de jaren ´30 kwam niet naar boven bij. Ik zat precies altijd in een filmdecor van een westernfilm. Daarnaast vond ik het ook wat langdradig. Weer werd Alice om een ´gunst´ gevraagd en het verhaal liep verder. Gelukkig zijn er ook positieve punten. De vriendschap die ontstaat tussen Alice en enkele dorpsbewoners is mooi beschreven. Er zit ook wat spanning in verweven. Alice beleeft namelijk hetgeen wat ze normaal gezien enkel in boeken leest. En uiteraard is er ook plaats voor romantiek. Al bij al een goed verhaal van vriendschap, geloof en hoop. First and foremost, this book is about the place of women. What does the Bible say about this? How does this change when the men are away to war? Not only the place of women in the household is discussed, but also in the workplace and in education. In Jean’s case we see that in 1941 it was not customary for a woman to be allowed to continue her studies or to choose her own field of study. The four main characters have a lot of depth and are lovable. But there are also many additional topics such as racism towards the African American population in the workplace, people’s thoughts about interracial couples and the detention camps for the POWs. What have you been reading lately? I'm currently on a Lynn Austin kick. If you like historical fiction, you'll love these. They are Christian based. I've read a lot of her World War II books, and they were fabulous! I just started reading Candle in the Darkness that is set during the Civil War. And oh my! She does a great job drawing you into the time period. It's making me think harder than ever about that time period and what it must have been like to fight the injustice of slavery. This book was sent to me in a care package during my first year of college. It took me a while to to get to it because I was so busy, but when I did read it, I finished it in one night!
