1963’s #FromRussiaWithLove was directed by #TerenceYoung based on #IanFleming’s 1957 novel of the same name. It is the second film in the #JamesBond series as well as #SeanConnery’s second turn as the character. In the film, #007 is sent to assist in the defection of a Soviet consulate clerk in Turkey where #SPECTRE plans to avenge Bond’s killing of Dr. No. #PedroArmendariz, #LotteLenya, #RobertShaw, #BernardLee, and #DanielaBianchi star alongside Connery. I have to start this by saying I am biased. From Russia with Love is one of my favorite Bond films. It’s one of the ones I suggest to people trying to get into the Bond films, especially the early ones. It’s one that I watch on a fairly regular basis. I just love this movie. From Russia with Love, is a razor-sharp, briskly-paced Cold War thriller It’s refreshingly free of the gimmickry that would characterize the later Bond films whilst still giving us a sampling of the familiar Bond formula i.e. action, gadgets, women, cars, exotic locales, et cetera. The actors play it straight with excellent results. Connery is not quite at the height of his Bond cool. That comes in the next film, Goldfinger. Still, there’s enough of that charm and style to balance out his more vulnerable moments in the film. He and Bianchi play real people. They’re making mistakes and falling into traps and falling for each other and It genuinely feels like they’re in danger and, by the end, you really hope their relationship will work out. Shaw and Lenya are fantastic villains. Both have exciting, well-choreographed fights with Connery. Shaw specifically is menacing. His character silently stalks Bond for most of the film and its terrifying and thrilling. And I like that he is essentially the SPECTRE version of Bond. They’re pretty evenly matched in almost every way which adds to the suspense. From Russia with Love is effectively paced and plotted, features a gallery of detestable rogues, and offers countless thrills. It’s surprisingly tough and gritty—long before Daniel Craig did it. This film is one of the series’ high points and I cannot recommend it enough. #alfieseesmovies

Dagens musikal: Inspirerad av fredagens Tolvskillingsopera så plockade jag idag fram: Love/Musik (2007). En biografimusikal om den stormiga kärlekshistorien mellan Kurt Weill och hans musa Lotte Lenya. Tyvärr så väljer man att låta skådespelarna som gestaltar Kurt o Lotte prata med en fruktansvärd fånig och fejkig tyskbrytning. Även rösterna är förställda för att låta mer likt originalens röster men för mig är det otroligt störande och resultatet gör att det är svårt att njuta av denna musikal trots att den innehåller en enorm mängd av grymt bra Weillmusik. So ein schöner Abend! Der muss jetzt ins Poesiealbum. FOTO 1: "KK" steht für "Kluge Köpfe", hier kann man es ganz eindeutig sehen: auf dem Schild des @salonfestival nämlich – das gestern Abend wieder zu einem Salon-Talk ins #HotelZoo am Kurfürstendamm geladen hatte (MERCI dafür!) – mit der Digitalphilosophin #SabriaDavid @meta_blum als Hauptgast und mir als Moderatorin. FOTO 2: Wir sprachen übers Internet, den digitalen Wandel, Sabria David gab interessante Einblicke u.a. in die von ihr mitentwickelte Strategie und Theorie der "medialen Resilenz" (Prinzip, grob verkürzt: "weniger ist mitunter mehr") – und im weiteren Austausch mit den Salongästen (MERCI fürs zahlreiche und aufgeweckte Dabeisein,!) ging es z.B. darum, dass "das Netz" sozusagen reif ist für eine Art Bürger:innenbewegegung, um es als wahrhaft öfftl. Raum zu erhalten. FOTO 3: Eine blitzgescheite, hochsympathische Person! Merci Sabria David, nochmals fürs Anreisen aus Bonn bzw Karlsruhe (wo sie an der Kalrshochschule lehrt). From a family of East Prussian photographers, based in Berlin since 1920, she first worked in the studio with her father before enrolling in the photography at the University of Munich in 1925. After returning to Berlin, she managed the family studio, which specialised in traditional portraits, and began working for the press and illustrated magazines. Between 1927 and 1935 she realised a series of portraits of figures from avant-garde artistic and intellectual circles from the Weimar Republic in natural and liberating poses (theorist Martin Buber, Odenwald, 1928; actor Lotte Lenya, Berlin, 1930). They both fled the Nazis, and settled in New York in 1935. There’s something about Lotte’s smoky voice that utterly transfixes me, not to mention her unusual beauty, that to my sense lies somewhere between Frances McDormond and Frances de la Tour. Plus she was a ginger, and being a ginger myself I love stories of gingers doing well. I first became aware of Lotte Lenya at the Duke of York Cinema in Brighton, England in the 1960s, when I saw the Bond Movie, From Russia With Love. Lotte played Rosa Klebb, a brutal and sadistic killer. The two most surprising things?
