Lana Turner eloped to Las Vegas & married Steve Crane on July 17th, 1942. Reported to have taken place around 10:55am by Judge George E. Marshall, the same judge who married her to Artie Shaw in 1940. In Lana’s autobiography, she said “It was a different justice of the peace this time, contrary to legend”. She must have forgotten she was being photographed or didn’t think anyone would be interested in fact-checking her story because the man in the photo above is George E. Marshall. Quote from Cheryl Crane’s 1988 autobiography: “They hired the same judge who had tied the knot for Mother & Artie Shaw two years before. She denies that she quipped, ‘Tie it tighter this time, Judge.’” However in Cheryl Crane’s 2001 documentary & in her 2008 autobiography, she quotes Lana as saying “Tie it tighter this time Judge.” So maybe at some point in the 1980s-90s, Lana admitted to Cheryl that she said it. After the wedding, Lana, Steve, Linda Darnell & Alan Gordon had breakfast at the Apache Coffee Shop. Chambers contracted with 20th Century Fox for most of her career. Her first two pictures for Fox were a pair from 1940, “Brigham Young” and “The Mark of Zorro,” both doubling for Linda Darnell and starring Tyrone Power. Chambers would go on to work with Darnell in “Buffalo Bill” (1944) and “Fallen Angel” (1945). The story goes that Chambers and Darnell developed a rapport on account of Chambers coming to Darnell’s aid when some men on the set were harassing her (Darnell was very young, only 17 at the time). Tyrone Power. Born this day, May 5, 1914 – November 15, 1958 Tyrone’s films include, The Mark of Zorro, Blood and Sand, The Black Swan, Prince of Foxes, Witness for the Prosecution, The Black Rose, and Captain from Castile. Tyrone’s own favorite film among those that he starred in was Nightmare Alley. His father, Tyrone Power Sr. was filming The Miracle Man when he died of a heart attack on December 23, 1931. He was 62 years old. Tyrone Sr. died in the arms of his son Tyrone who was 17-year-old at the time. In September 1958, Tyrone and his wife Deborah traveled to Madrid and Valdespartera, Spain to film Solomon and Sheba. While filming a dueling scene with his frequent costar and friend George Sanders, he had a massive heart attack. He died while being transported to the hospital in Madrid on November 15, 1958, at the age of 44. Funny black comedy about (assumed) infidelity and the (partly imagined) reactions it provokes. Probably the funniest and least stuffy that Rex Harrison has ever been, with even some genuine slapstick moments sprinkled in here and there. Linda Darnell is charming and exudes a warmth that makes it understandable for Harrison's character to get jealous. Linda Darnell in Blood and Sand (1941), a romantic technicolor melodrama directed by Rouben Mamoulian. She plays the kind-hearted Spanish aristocrat Carmen Espinosa, co-starring with Tyrone Power, Rita Hayworth and Anthony Quinn- quite an illustrious cast! Director Mamoulian paid the utmost attention to detail when composing the aesthetic of this film, and was inspired by the works of Catholic Spanish painters such as El Greco, Goya and Velázquez. Exteriors were filmed in filmed in Mexico City’s Plaza de Toros. It’s hard to believe Linda was barely 18 on the set of this film, as she gave a fantastic performance well beyond her years. Although this movie attained her popularity, she regretted being boxed into good girl roles: “People got tired of seeing the sweet young things I was playing and I landed at the bottom of the roller coaster. The change and realization were very subtle. I’d had the fame and money every girl dreams about—and the romance. Although the image was published in the fall of 1953, it was likely taken at least a year earlier. Both coming off divorces — hers from cameraman Pev Marley (1899-1964) and his from actress Joan Fontaine (1917-2013) —the pair casually dated, but there was no serious romance there. Linda was never a fixture on the Hollywood party scene, especially at that time in her life as a recent divorcee with a young daughter. When a reporter mentioned that people were wondering about her well-being because she was so rarely seen on the town, Linda asked in reply, “What’s wrong with that?” She continued, “Just because I’ve had enough nightclubs and restaurants to last a lifetime doesn’t mean I’m sitting home alone brooding. Just why does a single girl have to be involved in a torrid romance or have constant dates at nightspots or be planning a wedding in order to convince people that she isn’t neurotic or blue? I’ve been entangled since I was born, and I’m one hundred percent footloose and free!”✨ While Linda and Bill Dozier may not have had a deep relationship, he did soon become serious with another glamorous Hollywood beauty: actress Ann Rutherford (1917-2012). Dozier and Rutherford wed in 1953 and remained together until his death. Good morning! It's another week. I started reading Put Out More Flags. It's very entertaining so far. I remember reading The Grapes of Wrath when I was a teenager. We read Of Mice and Men and The Pearl in high school, and I read The Wayward Bus, The Grapes of Wrath, and The Short Reign of Pippin IV shortly after high school. The Grapes of Wrath made a great impact on me. It showed how the Joad family moved from the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma to California to survive, only to find so many other people in the same situation and moved to California. The 1940 film, directed by John Ford, is very good. It's shot in beautiful black and white, and Jane Darnell and Henry Fonda give great performances. However, the film, unlike the book, didn't show how massive this move to California was. There were so many people like The Joads who made the trip out West to find work. Also, they skipped the ending of the book. I don't believe in spoilers, so hopefully, you will read it. I remember I was floored by the ending. It stayed with me for years. The clear winner in this round of #bookvsmoviemonday is the book. If you haven't read it, please do so. Have you read this book or seen the film? What one is your favorite?

Eighty five years ago today, Linda Darnell — who had relocated to Hollywood just 10 days prior — went before the 20th Century Fox cameras for test shooting of what would become her first movie, “Hotel For Women” (1939). The man shown at Linda’s left is cinematographer Pev Marley, who was behind the camera on her first three films and would later also become her first husband. Linda remembered of that time and these tests, “When I was doing something especially wrong, [Pev] would pretend he had to fix a light behind me and come up to whisper the right way out of the corner of his mouth. The crew knew what he was doing, of course, and loved him for it. And I blessed him.“ She concluded, “…I was so terrified that, without [Pev’s] help, I could never even have finished the day.” But, thankfully, she did finish the day. Tyrone Power feels like an ideal matinee idol, the way he charms his way through this film. Physical, but with wit, kind of a perfect Zorro. Basil Rathbone as his main antagonist his deliciously evil, and the fight between the two is quite something, an excellently choreographed duel. Linda Darnell doesn't get too much to do, but gets to be charming and fierce and not just be a damsel in distress. I've always loved Hollywood's inspirational stories as much as I have loved their tragedies. Linda Darnell was an American actress (1923 - 1965) who was shot to stardom in the 1940s. She also gained notoriety for co-starring with Tyrone Power in a number of adventure films. Her career declined in the 1950s, due to both her alcohol addiction and weight gain. In 1965, while staying in her secretary's house, she was trapped on the second floor during a fire that had started in the living room. Despite all the secretary's daughter's efforts to save her, Linda was found next to a burning sofa and then was rushed into Chicago's Cook County Hospital, where was pronounced dead at the age of 42. In addition to my previous post on Ann Miller (1923-2004), today also marks the birthday of actress Jane Withers (1926-2021). In this photo, they are seeing celebrating their mutual birthday — Ann’s 20th and Jane’s 17th — back in 1943, with cakes and a party courtesy of Linda Darnell (1923-1965) ✨. Born in Georgia, Withers got her professional start on a local radio program when she was just 3 years old. A few years later, she relocated to Hollywood with her mother where she found additional radio work before making her screen debut in “Handle with Care” (1932). Withers worked steadily as a popular child actress, appearing in titles like “Mary Stevens, M.D.” (1932), “Bright Eyes” (1934), “Paddy O’Day” (1936), “Pepper” (1936), “The Holy Terror” (1937), “Checkers” (1937), “Rascals” (1938), and “Keep Smiling” (1938). As she matured into a teenager, she continued to act in films like “A Very Young Lady” (1941), “My Best Gal” (1944), and “Affairs of Geraldine” (1946). In the 1950s and beyond, she mainly focused her efforts on television, with the notable exception of her role as Vashti Snythe in “Giant” (1956). In addition to guest parts on television programs like “Bachelor Father”, “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour”, and “The Munsters”, Withers was well known to TV audiences for playing Josephine the Plumber in commercials for Comet. Later in her career, she voiced animated characters for Disney video games and television series. Withers was married twice. Her first union, which produced three children, ended in divorce. Her second marriage produced two additional children and endured until her husband’s death in a 1968 plane crash 😞🙏🏼💖. Sadly, one of her sons predeceased her after battling cancer. Lovely Linda Darnell as she appeared in THE MARK OF ZORRO (1940). Today marks the tragic passing of this beautiful star. On April 10, 1965, Linda sadly died from burns she received in a fire at the house of her former secretary. She was trapped on the second floor of the home by heat and smoke, as the fire had started in the living room. Linda’s friends narrowly escaped from an upstairs window, but she herself didn’t make it out. Although still alive when the firefighters found her, Linda had third degree burns over 90% of her body. She was immediately rushed to Cook County Hospital and the doctors did all they could to save her. However, on April 10th, (33 hours after the fire) Linda sadly passed away, aged only 41. A coroner’s inquest into her death ruled that her death was accidental and that the fire had begun in or near the living-room sofa and was caused by a cigarette butt. Ironically, she had been watching “Star Dust” (1940) on television, which was one of the films that set her career in motion, when the house caught fire. Linda Darnell (1923-1965) as a big sister 💖✨ Linda’s younger brother, Calvin Jr. (1930-1984), passed away 40 years ago tomorrow on April 2, 1984. Nicknamed “Sonny” or “Bubber” in childhood, Calvin spent much of his adult life living in London, reportedly even working for actress Vivien Leigh (1913-1967) at one time. After Linda’s sudden death, the Darnell family decided it was in the best interest of all involved to not share the news with their ailing mother, Pearl (1892-1966), who had a history of mental and emotional problems. Instead, in order to explain the extended absence of Linda to Pearl, Calvin would occasionally send postcards to their mother in Linda’s name from overseas. The ruse worked and Pearl, believing her famous daughter was traveling and working abroad, was kept calm and comfortable for the remaining months of her life, never learning of Linda’s tragic and untimely passing.
