Happy Mother’s Day to our wonderful mom. When we were little she led our adventures and taught my sisters and me to love nature and flowers and learning. She was and is a great role model for her five grandchildren - hardworking, supportive and loving. Today Karla, her husband Michael and I spent the afternoon with mom at Gellatly Nut Farm Park on Okanagan Lake. We had fish and chips- mom’s favourite- and then went for a stroll around the park and along the lakefront. Later mom read the cards we each had given her and enjoyed the lovely bouquet of flowers. As I hugged Takashi goodbye, my heart felt like it was being squeezed by a cold fist of loss. My head was a crazy mess of thoughts, all worse than the last. I dont know, maybe I was just making things up, or maybe I got used to seeing him like that, but I always felt like he didnt care about anything. It was like a big chill, totally different from the cozy memories we had. This meeting made me think about something that had never come up before: were we really brothers, connected by blood and shared experiences? I knew, like, intellectually, that Takashi was my older brother, always around when I was a kid. Maybe he had some bad stuff happen to him in the past, and it made him keep some things to himself. Leaving the care home, I took this uncertainty with me, like a heavy burden on my shoulders. The future of our relationship was laid out in front of me, like an unexplored land. Do you think hanging out together today could bring us closer and make us feel like brothers again?
