A few days ago the India International Centre showed Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca (the jury is still out on whether it should be regarded more as David O Selznick’s Rebecca, given the famous creative tussles between the two men at the time). Though I remembered the film fairly well from more than 30 years ago, it looked great on a big screen (and a Criterion print). Had forgotten what a good supporting cast it had, including C Aubrey Smith (founder of the Hollywood Cricket Club) and Nigel Bruce (who had played a cricket obsessive in Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes). The big surprise for me was that Laurence Olivier’s performance as Maxim de Winter holds up quite well. That might seem an obvious thing to say (as a teenager in the early 90s I had completely bought into his Great Actor reputation) - but Olivier’s stature as a *screen* performer has suffered a decline in recent decades. This performance was a reminder that around this time, in Wuthering Heights and other films, he had started learning how to act for the movie camera as opposed to on the stage. He is a bit mannered, of course (no one would accuse him of being understated in the way that Henry Fonda and James Stewart were in two of the other big Oscar-nominated performances of that year), but he is playing an upper-crust Englishman with a certain social mien, so it isn’t out of place for the character. Coincidentally it was also Olivier’s 117th birth anniversary yesterday... #alfredhitchcock #davidoselznick #laurenceolivier #joanfontaine #judithanderson #rebeccafilm #indiainternationalcentre #1940scinema #oldhollywood

They Live By Night (1948). “I’m a thief just the same as you are, but I won’t sell you hope where there ain’t any.” Bowie (Farley Granger) and Keechie (Cathy O’Donnell) are two young lovers who just want to be left alone to find their place in an otherwise uncaring world, but society refuses to overlook Bowie’s penchant for robbing banks. Bowie, having just broken out of prison with two older, hardened criminals, Chicamaw and T-Dub, takes refuge with Chicamaw’s brother and Keechie, his niece. Bowie and Keechie quickly fall in love and set out on their own, but a series of robberies and bad decisions keep them just one step ahead of the law. I won’t spoil whether they find long-term happiness, but because fatalism is a key element of film noir, well, you know. They Live By Night, Nicholas Ray’s (Rebel Without a Cause) stunning directorial debut, is a masterpiece of the genre. Ray finds the perfect balance between romance and crime drama, and brings a naturalism to the proceedings that wound be emulated by the gritty, realistic noirs of the 1950s. The screenplay is top notch - every scene matters, with each decision moving the story toward its fateful end. Neither Granger nor O’Donnell had particularly long careers, but both are perfect here. The authenticity of their performances helps bring a quality most noirs lack - a sense of true heartbreak. Ten out of ten fedoras. Mae West in My Little Chickadee, 1940.  After a scandal runs a gold-digger (West) out of town, she meets a con artist and becomes embroiled in a string of petty deceits. Dick Foran, who was being paid by the week, would go to Mae West and tell her that W.C. Fields was rewriting his lines to give himself more screen time and to try to steal the film from her. Then he would go to Fields and tell him the same thing about West. In this manner he was able to extend his employment from a few weeks to several months, as both Fields and West - who didn't like each other - would hold up production while they would rewrite their scenes. #maewest #thelittlechickadee #edwardfcline #wcfields #josephcalleia #dickforan #margarethamilton #donaldmeek #oldhollywood #goldenageofhollywood #1940scinema #westerncomedy #doubleentendre
