Frances Robinson (born April 26, 1916; here with Robert Paige in “The Last Warning”, 1938), started out as a child star in silent pictures, including as Henrietta in director D.W. Griffith’s “Orphans of the Storm” (1921), set in late-18th-century France, before and during the French Revolution, starring Lillian and Dorothy Gish. A handful of other small parts followed. • By the 1930s, she’d blossoming into a much-admired John Robert Powers model, featuring in various beauty product advertisements as well as on the covers of Elle, Mademoiselle, and Harpers. • During the mid-1930s, she moved to Hollywood hoping that her success as a cover girl would translate onscreen, starting out with a series of bit parts, including “Reckless”, “Dante’s Inferno”; “Redheads on Parade”, and Millions in the Air” (1936), with John Howard and Wendy Barrie. • By the end of the decade, she was briefly under contract to Universal, garnering small supporting parts, including “Personal Secretary”, “Service De-Luxe”, and “The Family Next Door”, all starring Joy Hodges.
