A good rule of thumb would seem to be always to pick up records by Rahsaan Roland Kirk when you see them. This wasn’t on my radar at all but there it was @lorenzosrecordswanted and it didn’t take much thought to grab it. Had no idea that Kirk played harmonica until I heard this and really that probably shouldn’t surprise me at all…maybe it’s surprising he isn’t playing two other instruments at the same time. As the title suggests this is largely music that isn’t his own so there’s a bit of Bird, a track by Frank Foster and originals by Hilton Ruiz, Trudy Pitts and Mattathias Pearson who are all in this group. Roy Haynes is also here which is always a good thing, their duet on ‘Simone’ is one of my favourite things on the album. There’s also a call up for the massively underrated trumpet man Richard Williams. Now playing in stereo, 1970 (Monarch pressing) : I’m pretty sure this is an original pressing, but that Kmart sticker looks so good. The runouts match the original and this Atlantic label was used until 1973, so if it’s not original - it’s an early repress. Anyway, I finally took off the shrink today and even though I didn’t get it for the Kmart sale price, I only paid a few more dollars a couple years ago! This album is diverse - it opens with a soul jazz, R&B number backed by The Sweet Inspirations at certain moments. They also sing on the next track which is completely the opposite in style - it’s a song that boasts African and Middle Eastern rhythms and instruments. It was probably the most non-Sweet Inspirations thing they had ever done. The second half has Indian vibes on Chandra. Drummer Roy Brooks wrote the other song “Eboness” musically describing a beautiful woman. It’s probably my favorite track highlighting Lateef’s prowess on the flute. Yusef Lateef - Hush ‘n’ Thunder (Atlantic, 1973) I came to Yusef Lateef’s music via his Atlantic years, and specifically (if memory serves) this record, so it’s hard to be objective—I just dig it. Lateef always liked to blow over some blues, R&B and gospel, and there’s lots of that here, including two appearances by the JC White Singers (one of which starts with a long intro of electronic noise, which is one of the only really out-there flourishes on the album along with some groaning vocalizations on a couple of other tunes). Kenny Barron contributes four compositions, including “Sunset” (heard on his great Muse album Sunset to Dawn) and the funk odyssey “Opus Pts. 1 & 2”, which also features Ray Bryant on piano. Oh, and it starts with a lovely flute/cello duet on “Come Sunday”. McCoy Tyner - Cosmos (Blue Note, 1976) What are the definitive, must-have releases in this series? For me, it’s this one, Booker Ervin’s Back from the Gig, and Freddie Hubbard’s Here to Stay, but hey, I haven’t heard them all. In any case, this draws from three sessions between 1968 and 1970 that work very well together. The core trio of Tyner, Herbie Lewis and Freddie Waits (who’s a huge presence here) is a cohesive foundation on which to add stuff like the string quartet — some of the best material on album imo — or a Gary Bartz/Hubert Laws/Andrew White front line. In the mid-70s to early 80s, due to financial troubles, Blue Note raided its vault to crank out unreleased dates of their artists. The “Blue Note Re-issue Series” is the first batch of this effort. This is a combo of 2 unreleased dates led by McCoy Tyner. Both are fantastic, but since they are so far away from the trendy fusion sound, it’s not hard to understand why the master tapes of these 2 dates were put in storage after leaving Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in 1969 and 1970. The first date is a session from 1969 when McCoy was experimenting with having a string section in his music 3/5 tunes. The 2 trios tunes illustrate McCoy’s imagination. The 3 stringed tunes are lush and surprisingly open, as McCoy and Kermit are using the strings as if it’s a horn. The second date is a post-bop session from 1970 between the “Extensions” session and “Asante” session, when McCoy is going out to the realm of spiritual jazz. Together, in my opinion, are some of the best music McCoy ever recorded. McCoy redefines what a lullaby means on “Asian Lullaby”. Baby has nightmares too. McCoy rocks the baby with his patterned thick chord architecture and polyrhythm, while Gary, Andrew and Hubert add haunting sounds over Freddie’s rolling drums as if they were coming from The Cure’s theme from “The Crow”. The tune is haunting, but you’re still grounded. Gary shines on “Hope” as he adds the spiritual layer as good as Pharoah Sanders. The problem for getting a reissue 2-fer like this one is you really wish the album presentation sound quality would have been better. The music was fresh despite festering in the vault for 6-7 years at the time of the release, but it looks like a re-issue of a fossil recording by budget labels. I’m a tiny bit obsessed with Tyner. I’ve been working my way through his enormous output for Milestone but I’ve wanted to find this one for ages. Got to be one of the best in the misleadingly titles Reissue series: not actually a reissue but released here for the first time. In a weird correlation with the Andrew Hill album in the series this features a group with the same string quartet and the same drummer recorded a few months apart which was also shelved…did Blue Note have something against strings?! No idea but in both cases it works fantastically and I can’t think of any other sessions either of them did like this. Got to mention the rhythm section of Herbie Lewis and Freddie Waits who are unbelievably good, guess that’s why he used one or both of them on most of his albums round this time. Haven’t even got to the second record yet which has the added the added bonus of Hubert Laws, Gary Bartz and Andrew White.
