“What is seen is not always what is real. According to Shakespeare there was something operating in nature. Perhaps something in human nature itself that was rotten.” Not many people have had quite as many roles in horror or as much of an impact as Lin Shaye has had. It is a rarity to see her at a convention so I took the opportunity to make it as memorable as possible. Modern horror audiences know her for her work as the psychic medium Elise Rainier who helps people battle their demons and hauntings in the Insidious films, but her resume goes far beyond that. I remember her best as Nancy’s loving English teacher in the original A Nightmare on Elm Street. She was also memorable in The Grudge (2020) remake, Ouija (2014), 2001 Maniacs (2005), Dead End (2003), There’s Something About Mary (1998), Dumb and Dumber (1994), Critters (1986), and had a cameo in the slasher Alone in the Dark (1982). She provided voice work for the 2022 video game The Quarry. Also her brother founded the production company New Line Cinema.

Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) ... In the third film, Elise, dealing with loss of her own, is called into action when an injured girl's attempts to contact her deceased mother catches unwanted boogedy-boogedy attention. This third installment, helmed by Leigh Whannell instead of James Wan, takes us back to a few years before the Lambert hauntshow and thus functions as a prequel. It does, however, advance the story impressively by fleshing out, beefing up, and galvanising Lin Shaye's Elise character. A very worthwhile journey, I found Chapter 3 to be the best of the lot thus far, at least as far as my tastes are concerned. We don't have Byrne or Wilson but the new characters played by Stefanie Scott and Dermot Mulroney are pretty dang good and fairly easy to get along with. Their little story is fairly touching and, combined with Shaye's elevated presence, the movie pulls off some impressive pathos along with its horror. While there are still jump scare tactics, I'm pleased that, for the most part, we've decided to stick with the second film's atmospheric and character-driven approach. It's more of a slowboil horror and I love that when the stage is properly set for it. The Whannell and Sampson comic relief team is quite cool too. I had a couple good laughs and the building of their partnership with Elise was fun and rewarding. The movie is dark as balls and this might be the first time I've had to alter screencaps from a perfectly good transfer to ensure you get some idea of what it was that I was capturing. The first two were dark too, but gawdam, this one went a bit nuts. The apartment building setting is fresh and makes for a diffferent Further approach. Elise's journey into it is nicely doubled to illustrate character growth. Overall, the film is not an unnecessary prequel as it not only grounds and expands the experience but also creates a touch of much-needed excitement for further entries in the franchise. Insidious 3 knows how to be effectively creepy, heavy, touching, and fun and that makes for a damn good horror movie in my books. Depois de centralizar os dois primeiros filmes no arco da família Lambert, a franquia "Sobrenatural" optou por mudanças para este terceiro filme. A narrativa então volta no tempo, uma decisão correta, e aproveita um pouco mais da personagem Elise (Lin Shaye), que apareceu muito bem nos outros filmes. A trama acompanha a adolescente Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott), uma garota que sofre com a perda recente da mãe, enquanto ajuda o seu pai, Sean (Dermot Mulroney), a cuidar do seu irmão caçula. Mas, coisas estranhas começam a acontecer na casa, e acreditando que é sua mãe tentando fazer contato, Quinn procura a medium Elise, que passa por uma fase difícil, na qual teme usar o seu dom. Um dos grandes acertos do longa, sem dúvidas, foi perceber o potencial da personagem Elise, e aproveita-la por mais tempo. Assim, conseguimos nos aprofundar mais na personagem, e conhecer um pouco mais de sua vida. Inclusive, o longa aborda muito bem o trauma recente que a personagem passou, e o porquê do seu medo em tentar realizar uma nova ligação espiritual. O longa também ganhou novo fôlego na direção. Depois de comandar os dois primeiros longas, James Wan deixa o comando e Leigh Whannell assume a direção. E o cineasta vai bem, ao retratar de forma ameaçadora a figura sobrenatural deste terceiro filme, e vai ainda melhor no arco da personagem Quinn, que após um acidente, fica presa em uma cama por boa parte do filme, gerando momentos de tensão muito bem construídos. O erro do filme são alguns coadjuvantes não serem melhor aproveitados, como o próprio irmão de Quinn, que em determinados momentos simplesmente some do filme. Por fim, "Sobrenatural: A Origem" pode até não ser tão expansivo como os outros longas, mas era o fôlego que a franquia precisava. Com ótimos momentos de tensão, o longa constrói um suspense sem exageros, e na medida certa, que garantem a diversão. from 11/30 🌖 1-4 • at 14:12 there's a shot of the hallway in the apartment building of the main character. it is revealed only seconds later that her neighbor lives in unit '412'. later on in the film there's a wink at 513, as the door to apartment 514 is on screen. astral projection is perhaps the main theme of the Insidious movies. I have had some past experiences with this "phenomenon". and occasionally, I still do experience it. unwillingly, I'll just be.. sucked out of my body-- for lack of a better way of putting it. but it's always been too terrifying for me to fully embrace, because it typically only happens when I am enjoying a deep sleep.. one day I do want to explore astral travel in an open and courageous way. 5&6 • the same day I watched the movie Resident Evil: Death Island. INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 (2015): adolescente é atormentada por demônio, que usa a imagem de sua recém falecida mãe. Para ajudá-la, Elise Rainier inicia sua parceria com os imaturos e iniciantes Tucker e Specs, desvendando os mistérios do “Além” e outros segredos envolvendo seus poderes e potenciais. Prequel que conta um pouco do passado de Elise, agora focada em seus primeiros trabalhos como investigadora paranormal. O filme, mesmo que apresentando a mesma essência de seus antecessores, não é tão envolvente. A história se mostra apenas como um conto de origem, mesmo não aprofundando a própria origem de Elise e o universo de “Insidious”. The first 2 #insidious movies are hot garbage. #insidious3 is a little bit better in terms of entertainment value but it’s still pretty bad. It’s a franchise COMPLETELY built on #jumpscares. There is no other value to this movie besides getting startled 15 times. Even the title screen is a jump scare, they know what they are doing the bastards. I know this franchise gets a lot of attention cause it’s good for a quick and easy Halloween scare but it’s nothing that will stand the test of time overall. #conjuringuniverse has some MAJOR fart bombs in it but at least they approach the #supernatural with a creative spin on storytelling. The script is bad, the acting is bad, but I’ll take any movie with a badass old woman KICKING SOME GHOSTS ASS! Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) SPOILER REVIEW: ————————————————————————————— I like a lot of things about this movie but ultimately, I feel like they could’ve done more. The plot just kinda lacked but I love the cast. Dermot Mulroney is great as always. I thought Stefanie Scott did a good job too. Loved seeing Hayley Kiyoko. The performances were good. I also thought the scares were creative. The car early on that hit Quinn was so unexpected and came outta nowhere. The man who can’t breathe as they call him grabbing Quinn from above when she’s looking under the bed was cool. It distracted you, making you think it was gonna grab her from under the bed but then it didn’t. Also, just the entire element of Quinn being immobile is scary. When shit hits the fan, she can’t do anything. However, I do think they should’ve leaned more into that element. That should’ve been kind of the “gimmick” of this movie. The Ups & Downs of the Insidious franchise so far... A very consistent franchise fully loaded with jump scares and tense scenes. The franchise fluctuates between average and above average viewing for me, there is some good over arching story lines for each character that intertwine and resolve in satisfactory places. There are some very tense moments in some of the films with each movie having a signature evil entity to bring about new scares and moments of horror. Unfortunately this franchise never hits the heights of BLOODY BRILLIANT viewing as towards the later films in the franchise the movies were spoiled by oversharing trailers, obvious predictability and some having endings that for me just seem too easy and poorly written. Horrors of Blumhouse Saturday: Insidious Triple Feature Insidious (2010) 8.5/10: I’ll keep these all short but while it has a rough start, the film really began to pick up. The film creeped me out quite a bit and it was through the use of suspense and tension, rather than overusing jump scares, that really did it for me. Overall, this felt like Poltergeist, but went deeper into the other side and I give it respect for that. Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) 7.5/10: This film didn’t feel as important as the first one. The focus changed to backstory while main story was sitting on the back burner. They also overused their jump scares and really really overused sudden screaming as scares. It got annoying fast. What I did enjoy was exploring more of “The Further.” That did a great job of building off the original and kept it at above average. Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) 8/10: While this wasn’t what we all expected after seeing the ending of Chapter 2, I found myself really enjoying this film. The emotional stakes are amped up and I loved how the character was forced to endure the horror due to her injuries. Me thinks an Insidious binge in chronological order for today's lineup because I haven't seen the most recent. That order is (not entirely as pictured): Insidious Chapter 3 Insidious The Last Key Insidious Insidious Chapter 2 Insidious The Red Door Like I said, haven't seen Red Door yet so I don't know where it will land on the best/worst of the bunch, but Chapter 3 is actually my favorite because imo the boogedy-boogedy in that one is the scariest of the bunch. I like creepy drag black bride woMan too, but Darth Maul's cousin, I mean Lipstick Demon, just doesn't do it for me and I think it's the big bad in the new one. That said, I do really like the 1st and 2nd movies too with Last Key being my least favorite of the bunch, although I have liked it a wee bit more with each viewing. I will say even on my first viewing of the original I thought it was epically stupid to kill off that one character even if they didn't know the one movie would turn into a big franchise. Obviously they realized that too which is why we got a bunch of prequels to have that character alive again and not just boppin' around "The Further".
