Alien: Covenant (dir. Ridley Scott, 2017) Oh dear. Now I understand that people don’t like this one, and it’s not great overall but generally (like Prometheus) I enjoy it for what it is. However this last rewatch just annoyed me. Might be my current frame of mind but - this just wound me up this viewing. Again like Prometheus I like the overall idea, but it’s so shoddily put together - I dunno if it’s Ridley just losing it, or Fox unable to stop messing with their franchise. Stupid faceless astronauts run around doing stupid things. They get really careless and blow things up they shouldn’t. Alien lifecycle now apparently gestates and grows in record speeds. And we have another “Xenomorph but not Xenomorph” in the Neomorph and Bloodburster. Generally creepy but are the entirely necessary? Again feels like Scott trying to do something different, then Fox steps in going “but - more Aliens?” Dunno who’s at fault here, but it doesn’t really excuse this effort. Another cool film find Red mist not a bad film. Originally named freak dog. It's about a young man that works in the hospital morg he's a bit of an out cast and is picked on by students training to be doctors. They invite him to party with them playing him with drugs and alcohol.. he ends up having a seizure and instead of helping him he fulls in to a coma.. feeling guilty one of the students give him a test drug on the sly hoping to help him but instead he starts having put of body experiences and can take control of other people's bodies and starts to use his new found powers to get revenge on those who were horrible to him in the past. Onto Predator 2 (dir. Stephen Hopkins, 1990). Next one to pop up on Disney +. Not seen this since it was released on VHS in 1991. I think I initially remember being disappointed Arnie wasn’t in it, but liking the LA setting, and thinking it was extremely gory. On rewatch - still like the LA-drug dealer plot, and was surprised how relentless and action packed it was. But - I thought it looked a bit cheap in places (the Predator effects are shoddy IMO), and nowhere near as gory as I remember. Didn’t enjoy it as much as The Predator either. I guess that’s gonna be the fun thing watching out of order - comparing things you normally wouldn’t. The Psycho house was one of the big draws of the Universal Tram Tour back in 1964, and continues to be the subject of much interest even now. Over the years the house has been through a number of alterations and has even completely moved location twice after construction. The Psycho house was built from a number of Universal’s stock units to save money. The front of the house and the distinctive tower was the same as that used in the “Harvey” house on Colonial Street. Originally it consisted of just the left wall and the front of the house. In 1963 (photos below), the other side wall was added, and then in 1983, the rear of the house was added. Final Destination 3 (dir. James Wong, 2006) Needed something daft and easy to watch yesterday. FD3 is up there as one of my faves of the series along with no2. It’s the one with the rollercoaster, the nail gun death and the tanning beds. It’s utterly stupid, it makes me laugh, and think Mary Elizabeth Winstead is great in this (I generally think she’s great in everything). She carries the film, and don’t know how she did it playing it completely straight. Someone just reminded me this existed - Pyewacket (dir. Adam MacDonald, 2017) Saw this on a whim a while back. And while I liked it while watching, didn’t think it was that astonishing or anything. Civil War (dir. Alex Garland, 2024). Thought this was pretty bloody awesome, and was hella stressful. Seen a lot said about the “neutral-ness” of this and how apolitical it is, but - you kinda forget about that element once the people start being awful (Jesse Plemons) or when they get to DC. FALLOUT (tv series, Amazon, 2024) - as an avid Fallout player, I’ve been excited about the series starting and HOLY SHIT - 3 episodes in and I am hooked!! Amazing to see another video game adaptation where the world building has been lifted directly from the game (like The Last Of Us was). Everything feels so familiar, from the houses made of junk, to the sunset sasparilla posters, the power armour and the vaults! Think Ella Purnell is a great choice as the protagonist (am a fan anyway), and am thoroughly enjoying the Ghoul and Maximus storylines.
