Day 2294 : The Allman Brothers Band Idlewild South - 1970 Idlewild South is the second studio album by American southern rock band the Allman Brothers Band, Following the release of their 1969 debut, the Allman Brothers Band toured the United States extensively to promote the album, which had little commercial success. Their performances, however, did create positive word of mouth exposure that extended to more famous musicians, such as Eric Clapton, who invited group leader Duane Allman to contribute to his 1970 album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. As a result of the band’s relentless touring schedule, Idlewild South was recorded gradually over a period of five months in various cities, including New York, Miami, and Macon, Georgia, the band’s adopted home. Tom Dowd had previously been sought to record the group’s debut but had been unavailable. The material presented on Idlewild South was written during this period and tested out on the road at shows. RIP Dickey Betts. Dernier membre fondateur du Allman brothers Band qui était encore en vie vient de nous quitter à l’âge de 80 ans. Homme de l’ombre du groupe derrière les deux figures de proues que furent les frères Allman. Pourtant Betts était un fabuleux guitariste, parfait binôme de Duane avec lequel il affichait une complémentarité sans égal et fut à partir de l’album présenté ci dessous, co compositeur avec Gregg. Après un premier album en 1969 très ancré dans la tradition Blues Rock, c’est véritablement a partir de leur deuxième opus « Idlewild South » en 1970 que le groupe trouvera son identité, son « Son ». Et il le doit beaucoup à Dickey Betts qui incorpora ses sonorités jazzy et autres compos entièrement instrumentales que le groupe ne cessera de jouer en live. Comme ici avec « In memory of Elizabeth Reed » Premier modèle du genre pour le groupe, de ses fameuses pièces instrumentales de plus de 5/6 min qui deviendront la marque de fabrique du combo. On lui devra aussi d’autres standards après la mort tragique de Duane, comme Ramblin man ou Jessica. C’est un incroyable compositeur et instrumentiste qui vient de nous quitter aujourd’hui. Avec lui s’éteint définitivement le groupe Allman brothers Band. Mais certainement pas l’héritage de cet immense groupe, qui laissera pour la postérité l’identité d’un genre musical à part entière qu’il aura presque inventé seul: Le Southern Rock. Jackie first started playing with the Allman Brothers Band in the summer of 1993, filling in for Dickey on several dates. Gregg and Jack became close friends, with Jackie joining the Gregg Allman Band from 1993-97, which included his stellar guitar playing on Gregg's Searching For Simplicity album. Pearson jumped at the opportunity to join the ABB with Oteil Burbridge following the departure of Warren Haynes and Allen Woody after the '97 Beacon Theatre run. Jackie flew down to Florida to get to know Dickey better and jam together. After a few days, Dickey told Gregg, "Either we hire him, or I'm going to ask him for lessons." If you had parents that came up in Clayton, NC circa the Rock n roll 1970s, then you’ve definitely heard stories of the scene, which had to include Harvey B’s. Just outside of the Johnston county line (later becoming Dockside Dolls before burning down in the early 2000s) Harvey B’s was home to local juggernauts Nantucket, Sidewinder and Sutter’s Good Streak Band. The Tommy Redd stories alone could fill a book. My dad was a bartender and anytime his longtime friends would come over, and the beers were flowing, you could bet the Harvey B’s stories would be soon to follow. The Allman Brothers Band - Idlewild South Second Canadian Pressing, 1971 Capricorn/Atco Records I GOT IT! I GOT IT! I GOT IT! If you're not aware, the first two Allman Brothers studio records are stone cold rock 'n roll classics. But......they didn't sell. Initially anyway. When their classic live album At Fillmore East took off, they did sell. The orignals were printed in low numbers though, so that meant reissues. My copy of the debut is a reissue. Now I can't choose a favorite Allman Brothers record, but it's one of the first two. Until yesterday a standalone copy of Idlewild South eluded me(I have it in the Beginings 2 LP set, which includes their first two albums in a convenient set, but is rumored to be a different master). The Vinyl Room, a shop about 45 minutes away from me posted their latest additions on Facebook and low and behold, an early pressing was in there. It ended up being a pretty clean second Canadian pressing. They ended up having a couple other records I'd been looking for as well. #WhereWasDickeyToday. 53 years ago today, the Allman Brothers Band played at the homecoming dance in the Kendall Cram room at Tulane University. The dance was held in a relatively small hall packed with kids who had no idea who the Allman Brothers were, or that the band in front of them would become the number one act in America within a few short years. Those present in the audience that night were shouting out requests for 'Louie Louie', 'Wipe Out' and 'Gloria', which the band happily played. #Legend. Remembering the legendary Tom Dowd (October 20, 1925 - October 27, 2002). Tom's illustrious career spanned more than half a century, working with some of the biggest names in the music industry. He began working with the Allman Brothers on Idlewild South in 1970. Dowd was tapped to produce the band's debut album in 1969, but due to a scheduling conflict, producer credits went to Atlantic Records house engineer Adrian Barber. Some of the Allman Brothers best work was produced by Tom Dowd including At Fillmore East, Eat A Peach, Enlightened Rogues, Seven Turns, Shades Of Two Worlds and Where It All Begins. #SouthernLegend. Another gem from deep in the vault... Jack Pearson performing Gregg Allman's 1970 classic Midnight Rider live at the Station Inn. Jackie first started playing with the Allman Brothers Band in the summer of 1993, filling in for Dickey Betts. Gregg and Jack became close friends, with Jackie joining Gregg's band from 1993-97, including his stellar guitar playing on Gregg's Searching For Simplicity album. Pearson jumped at the opportunity to join the ABB with Oteil Burbridge following the departure of Warren Haynes and Allen Woody after the '97 Beacon Theatre run. Jackie flew down to Florida to get to know Dickey better and jam together. After a few days, Dickey told Gregg, "Either we hire him, or I'm going to ask him for lessons." #LivingLegend. In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed was the first instrumental written by any band member, and the first of many Dickey wrote over the next 30 years. Betts wrote this song for a girl, but not the one in the title. Elizabeth Reed Napier (born November 9, 1845) is buried at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, Georgia, where Betts and other band members would often write. He used the name from her headstone as the title because he did not want to reveal who the song was really about: a girl he had an affair with who was Boz Scaggs' girlfriend. In a 2020 interview with the Sarasota Herald Tribune, Dickey talked about Duane Allman and In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed. “Duane and I had an understanding, like an old soul kind of understanding of let’s play together. Duane would say, ‘Man, I get so jealous of you sometimes when you burn (a guitar solo) off and I have to follow it,’ and we would joke about it. So that’s kind of Duane and mine’s relationship. It was a real understanding. That was kind of the way the thing built momentum. And then I wrote ‘Elizabeth Reed’ and instead of Duane being jealous of it he said, ‘That is the greatest thing, man.’" Considerable legend developed about the piece's genesis and what Dickey was doing at the time, much of it fueled by an interview Duane Allman gave Rolling Stone Magazine. "Duane told some crazy shit about that graveyard," Betts later said. "I'd be lying if I said I didn't have my way with a lady or two down there," added Gregg Allman. In 2007 Rolling Stone Magazine named In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed one of the 50 Best Songs Over Seven Minutes, and one of the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs Of All Time. The song has been called 'The blueprint of a concert warhorse, capturing the Allman Brothers at their most adventurous.'
