Happy Birthday to Doug Woolverton @woolve2 who turned 42 today. Doug is a dear friend and an extremely gifted trumpet player that I met in Newport years ago. Doug has been working hard as a pro trumpet player and wore a number of hats in a short period of time. He hit the ground running in Roomful of Blues where he toured for many years. He also would sit in with local bands playing every style imaginable. Doug offered annual shows celebrating the music of Miles Davis where he assembled an ensemble to feature different periods of Miles’ work. These shows were cherished by the local community. As if that wasn’t enough, Doug also initiated a new happening in Newport with Monday night gigs at The Fifth Element with a new groove band he started called The Groove Merchants. They turned an otherwise dead Monday night into a happening, for at least 5 years. More recently Doug was playing in a Chicago cover band called “Beginnings” and toured nationally with them. He also recorded and toured with Victor Wainwright and through that venture became a Grammy nominee! After a series of events, Doug decided to seek fame with his horn by traveling west and settled in California to make it happen. The impact of Covid-19 on the whole entertainment industry and musicians in particular has had a serious impact - wordwide. With that reality noted, I wish Doug a wonderful birthday and for all your dreams to come true. The Allman's played on a triple bill with The Dead and The Doobie Brothers. The classic setlist included Mountain Jam, Ain't Wastin' Time No More, Black Hearted Woman and Leave My Blues At Home. Warren Haynes belted out two blues standards, Good Morning Little Schoolgirl and Who's Been Talking. It is from one of my ABBsolute favorite Allman Brothers Band sources of all-time: Tom Nolan’s The Allman Brothers Band: A Biography in Words and Pictures, a 1976 book published by Sire Books/Chappell Music Company. Long out of print, it first caught my attention sometime in the 1990s. I got my first copy from interlibrary loan. Even after Craig Ruskey of the me my own book, I kept the photocopies of it in a binder on my bookshelf for years. It was a staple of my research for Play All Night! as it is the only full biography of the band until Scott Freeman’s Midnight Riders in 1995. The group hadn’t yet broken up when Nolan did his interviews and there’s a general sense of optimism throughout. It’s full of great quotes and has some of the early tellings of stories etched in Allman Brothers Band lore. "The whole history of the band and what we stand for I guess is spontaneous. It's been very spontaneous since the very beginning. Duane came to Jacksonville looking for musicians and we just jammed. All the cats that were in Jacksonville at the time would just get together and jam. It just happened that this group got together and me and Jaimoe just clicked. It just worked. Nobody went after getting 2 drummers. We were 2 players that could play together and could work off of each other, and inspire each other and push each other to higher planes. That's what happened. It's a very spontaneous kind of thing. There was very little thought given to it. We knew it was right. You could tell when we played. Things were clicking." Haynes also is known for his associations with the surviving members of the Grateful Dead, including touring with Phil Lesh and Friends and The Dead. In 1979, Robert Palmer covered the ABB's 10th anniversary reunion tour for 'Enlightened Rogues' for Rolling Stone. Palmer made multiple appearances in 'Play All Night' as he was among the earliest converts to the magic of the ABB. https://www.longlivetheabb.com I actually got a chance to read the raw transcripts of Palmer's interviews at the Hogan Jazz Archives at Tulane. They had his copy of 'Enlightened Rogues' as well. --- "The Allman Brothers’ two-guitar sound has received more publicity than the two-drummers setup, but the interaction between Trucks and Jaimoe is equally distinctive. After a while Butch stops tinkering with his timpani and gets back behind his traps, and it becomes evident that the magic is still there. The two drummers set up a busy, bristling whirlpool of accents and cross-rhythms, and not once do they get in each other’s way. Ultimately, the group’s excitement about the album and tour is something that can’t be faked. Even Jaimoe, who admits he agreed to the reunion initially because he needed money to continue his music studies, says, 'I was sick of playin’ loud music, and man, I still don’t like to play loud music. But I sure like playing with these guys.' Butch Trucks says, 'I came here a little leery. When the thing broke up we were cooked, just burned out. But the first time I heard the new album I went apeshit. It’s got that energy in it, that feeling and intensity we have to have. And we’re just getting warmed up.'" “Blue Sky” was Dickey's first lead vocal performance with the Brothers. “I was very happy with that song. It was originally recorded with Duane as a basic instrumental track. No vocal. I hadn’t been doing any singing, so when we tried to put the vocal on it, we found it was in too low a key. It didn’t really matter though, it came off good. It just sounded funny when I first heard myself singing on the radio." Before the original members of Gov't Mule went to Bearsville Studios in upstate New York to record their debut album, the trio went to Georgia and stayed at the Big House while they were working on songs for the new record. On one of the days when they weren't playing, the photographer took them to several locations in and around Macon to shoot photos. They stopped by Rose Hill Cemetery, Johnny's Lounge and the Raymond Berry Oakley Memorial Bridge among others. #TodayInABBHistory. The 30th anniversary of Where It All Begins, released on May 3, 1994. After a year of personal and professional turmoil, the Allman's returned to the American music scene with this fantastic record. Gregg's honey-soaked, soulful vocals and the dual guitar craftsmanship of Dickey Betts and Warren Haynes are front and center on this record. Dickey's masterpiece "Back Where It All Begins" and Warren's epic "Soulshine" are the highlights of the album. Along with "No One To Run With", these songs were played over the FM radio airwaves and at concerts for the next two decades. I saw the Where It All Begins tour in August 1995. The level of musicianship was off the charts. Watching Dickey and Warren trading fiery licks or joined together playing dual guitar melodies was something I wont soon forget. They played half the album that night, mixed in between classics like The Same Thing, Hoochie Coochie Man and Whipping Post. It's hard to believe that this outstanding album is 30 years old. Didn't think it could get any better than day 1, but day 2 was absolutely epic @dazebetweennola . @theicemanspecial opened up the show with some swampy heat, @thedanieldonato and his band was truly phenomenal and an unbelievable talent to watch, @galacticfunknola blasted the main stage with the best Nola funk around, @karldensonstinyuniverse brought a smooth funky finish to what was left of the daylight and @govtmule was the grand finale of amazing collaborations to polish off the fest for the last time. Couldn't have asked for a better birthday out here @faubourgbeer festin for the last time. Thanks for the memories! 🎇
