On this day in 1935, Elizabeth Jones Reed Napier died. She probably never expected that her name would later become immortalized in a song title. Dickey Betts penned the song, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," for the Allman Brothers Band after seeing her headstone in Rose Hill Cemetery. It's said that Reed, born in 1845, came to Macon to attend Wesleyan College. She was married to Confederate Army Capt. Briggs Hopson Napier, and they had 12 children. #TodayInABBHistory. The 30th anniversary of Where It All Begins, released on May 3, 1994. After a year of personal and professional turmoil, the Allman's returned to the American music scene with this fantastic record. Gregg's honey-soaked, soulful vocals and the dual guitar craftsmanship of Dickey Betts and Warren Haynes are front and center on this record. Dickey's masterpiece "Back Where It All Begins" and Warren's epic "Soulshine" are the highlights of the album. Along with "No One To Run With", these songs were played over the FM radio airwaves and at concerts for the next two decades. I saw the Where It All Begins tour in August 1995. The level of musicianship was off the charts. Watching Dickey and Warren trading fiery licks or joined together playing dual guitar melodies was something I wont soon forget. They played half the album that night, mixed in between classics like The Same Thing, Hoochie Coochie Man and Whipping Post. It's hard to believe that this outstanding album is 30 years old. #ReleasedOnThisDate. May 3, 1994. The Allman Brothers Band release their eleventh studio album Where It All Begins. Recorded at BR Ranch Studios in Jupiter, FL. Produced by Tom Dowd. Album artwork by Ioannis. Album photography by Kirk West. The third album of the early 90's had the Allman's return to the studio to record this surprisingly blues inspired, highly spontaneous record. The playing is tighter and more focused, and the writing is stellar. Dickey wrote or co-wrote five tracks, all are exceptional compositions. The album starts off with two tracks that were co-written with former ABB band members. Gregg's soulful vocals on All Night Train, written with Warren Haynes and Chuck Leavell, started to address past problems. The funky, heavy driven Sailin' Cross The Devil's Sea, written with ABB guitarist Jack Pearson features Haynes' monster slide guitar work. The highlight of the album is Dickey's epic Back Where It All Begins, clocking in at just over 9 minutes. It's a story about being on the road, something every musician can relate to. It draws heavily on the Blue Sky/Elizabeth Reed style of jamming, but with fresh perspective. The Bo Diddley beat of No One To Run With garnered heavy FM radio airplay and became a concert staple for the next 20 years. Dickey's Change My Way Of Living and Everybody's Got A Mountain To Climb feature his trademark, country-tinged vocals. There are plenty of blues inspired cuts like Mean Woman Blues and the fiery Temptation Is A Gun. The final song added to the album was Warren's classic Soulshine. He suggested that Gregg sing it during rehearsals. "The minute I heard Gregg sing it, I knew the song was made for him and his remarkable voice," Warren says. "With this album, we wanted to create an old style record, where everything was recorded live on the fly. But if it was up to us, we'd never make another studio album. We'd just make live records, and that would be it." Where It All Begins was certified Gold in 1998. Did you know the Allman Brothers Band played its first ticketed show in Macon? On May 2, 1969, the band performed at the College Discotheque, which is now known as the Library Ballroom. The Misfitz started out playing for the kids at Junior High and then for the frats at Alabama and eventually did a Saturday television show called "Tuscaloosa Bandstand," hosted by Tiger Jack Garrett. The Misfitz admired and competed with another local band called The Gents. Regarding his '60s music days, a member of the Misfitz in Tuscaloosa, Chuck Leavell remembers, " It was a wonderful place and a wonderful time for all of us, and was sort of a 'breeding ground' for musicians." Day 2294 : The Allman Brothers Band Idlewild South - 1970 Idlewild South is the second studio album by American southern rock band the Allman Brothers Band, Following the release of their 1969 debut, the Allman Brothers Band toured the United States extensively to promote the album, which had little commercial success. Their performances, however, did create positive word of mouth exposure that extended to more famous musicians, such as Eric Clapton, who invited group leader Duane Allman to contribute to his 1970 album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. As a result of the band’s relentless touring schedule, Idlewild South was recorded gradually over a period of five months in various cities, including New York, Miami, and Macon, Georgia, the band’s adopted home. Tom Dowd had previously been sought to record the group’s debut but had been unavailable. The material presented on Idlewild South was written during this period and tested out on the road at shows. #WhereWasDickeyToday. The Allman Brothers Band at the UNC Jubilee. 53 years ago today, the last of the Jubilee concerts was held at the University of North Carolina. The three day festival featured performances by Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, The Allman Brothers Band, Cowboy, Spirit and the J. Geils Band. The concerts at Navy Field drew record crowds of an estimated 48,000 fans over the three days. A week after the 1971 concerts were held, the Student Union Activities Group recommended that Jubilee be discontinued. It had grown too big, and had been marred by complaints about noise, trash and unruly crowds for years. 1971 was the last straw. Concert goers crashed the front gates and tore down fences. A security guard that was hired for the event was injured trying to stop people from flowing through the holes in the fence. The Allman Brothers played several songs from their upcoming At Fillmore East album including Statesboro Blues, Don't Keep Me Wonderin', In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Whipping Post and One Way Out.
