I have never liked competing against others. I am more of a loner as my sisters can attest to and prefer competing against myself. I have been looking for something to see what I am capable of - to step out of the fear zone that’s been holding me back and own whatever is my maximum effort. But what sport event is right for me? I hope it’s this one. Even if I don’t complete it because my body gives out I am happy that I finally overcame the fear to put my neck out there to try something that’s scary to me. This was absolutely an awesome event. Thank you, @hyroxnl. I felt great going into this event. I felt calm, collected, and ready. During warm-up I knew my that fitness was better than before and that I was gonna do a PB, but I did make numerous errors, one of them been, playing it safe and not going all out at specific stations. By doing so, I lost minutes and not pushing harder where I could have, which cost me minutes. Lessons learned! Time: 1:12 and 3rd in my AG. Next weekend, head to Germany with the intent to correct all my errors/mistakes. Go into every station and execute smoothly. The goal is to shave off 3-4min and earn me a sub 1:10. That's it. DU PLEIN AIR AU FITNESS J'ai toujours aimé me lancer des défis et essayer de nouvelles choses. Pour en apprendre plus sur moi-même, pour évoluer dans mes sports et m'accomplir en tant qu'athlète, mais également pour sortir de ma zone de confort et bousculer mon quotidien. Je déteste la routine et j'ai besoin de trouver différentes manières de me stimuler et d'égayer mon quotidien. C'est pourquoi j'ai décidé cette année de me lancer dans quelque chose de totalement nouveau et qui m'est encore plutôt inconnu : le fitness. Mais pas n'importe lequel. J'ai découvert par hasard la course-fitness HYROX au courant de l'hiver et ça m'a directement accroché. Une discipline qui demande muscle, cardio, endurance et résilience mentale pour enchaîner course à pied et exercices fonctionnels (wall ball, burpees, farmer carry etc...). Ça tombe bien, HYROX organise la toute première compétition canadienne cette année à Toronto le 5 octobre et j'y serai ! Je ne pars pas de zéro, mais je pars de loin. J'ai encore énormément de travail à accomplir pour l'atteinte de cet objectif considérant que je n'ai pratiquement jamais fait de crossfit, ni de musculation et que je suis loin d'être un habitué des gyms. J'ai toujours préféré l'endurance cardiovasculaire à la force musculaire. Je connais donc très bien mes lacunes et ce sur quoi je vais devoir travailler. C'est donc avec cet objectif en tête que j'aborderai les prochains mois avec une préparation plus spécifique que pour les défis de plein air auxquels j'ai l'habitude. L'un n'exclu pas l'autre et j'ai encore plusieurs défis plein air qui m'attendent, bien évidemment ! La course à pied restera dans mes priorités, mais le gym occupera désormais une grande place dans mes semaines, comme depuis quelques mois d'ailleurs. Does mental health ever take a break? Why does it hit me when I'm at my lowest point? And, why does it take me down when I'm at my highest point? Why do I feel this huge sense of pressure in my chest? How do I beg for forgiveness for every wrong I've committed when I was young? And, why and why and why?? I knew I had issues within me that I had no clue what it was. I would have panic attacks and run and hide alone because I did not want anyone to see that I wasn't normal. That I was weird. That I was different. This year, I had many ups and downs. Many exciting adventures, amazing achievements & unforgettable moments. I also experienced many scary and difficult times where I had to be on my own. Navigate thru my struggles. Scream and cry cause that's all I know how to do to release this pressure I feel in my chest and in my head. When my family, most importantly, my mother needs me, or she is sick, or i have to carry her to the car to take her to the hospital, I have to be at 💯 fully functional, despite my struggles. There is no time to think about me. Honestly, I come second. That's my choice. I am the happiest when my wife and my family are happy and healthy. Hyrox LA The race was going well - until it wasn’t. I was running with the lead pack - until I wasn’t. Another tough go this weekend… as I look back on my results from the summer and the weekend, I’ve found myself being more and more disappointed with my efforts. I left the weekend with a defeatist attitude. Questions started running through my head; do I have performance anxiety? Am I not training properly for the demands of the race? Am I not as good of an athlete as I believe I am? The potential of that last one stings. After a lot of reflection, I asked myself “does any of that really matter?” Nope. I love what I do, and I love the sport I compete in. The sooner I can detach from this identity and pressure I’ve put upon myself, the more I can relax and just enjoy the process. I’ll continue to show up everyday, crack the code on this race and be at the top running along side my Canadian brothers. As coach @kirkdewindtpt says “we keep rolling”. One of my favourite shots from @hyroxamerica Los Angeles. Mike and I never raced before but you’d think we had after this past weekend. We settled into our roles immediately out of the shoot. I paced off the running and if Mike had more in him he’d surge forward and I’d lead out and if we needed to conserve we’d fall back. We never talked on course other than when Mike was yelling at me for almost messing up our race by going the wrong way…..for anyone who’s ever run with me this is not new. The battle out there was fierce with only seconds separating multiple teams from the 3rd overall podium spot. We finished 3rd overall and 1st age group in a time of 57:45. Overall I couldn’t be happier with this season. A new spark is lit and at 45 my body is as fit as it’s ever been. I put down some 1.1KM sprints in the team relay that were 315 and 321 respectively and straight into burpees and farmer carries…..a few months back that wouldn’t have been possible. More thoughts to come on this year but for now I’m going to take some downtime, recharge and then get ready to go again. Grateful for the support from family and friends. If you’re thinking of giving #hyrox a try just go for it! It’s the most fun I’ve had racing in a long, long time! Hyrox Debut ‼️ 1:02:49 Last race weekend of 2023 in the books and in a year filled with firsts it was only fitting to end off with testing out a new race format! Takeaways: 1. Hyrox does in fact hurt. But differently then I’m used to… 2. The first run lap after a station feels real weird but the legs eventually come around 3. Practice the sleds 😅 yesterday was my first time pushing or pulling heavy sleds since high school (s/o @amy_joynt) and they took their toll (especially the pull) 4. Don’t be a baby on the WB’s… @gradyofsport out worked me and took away a sweet potential 🇨🇦 podium by 7 seconds!! So close 💀 5. I like that the running speed doesn’t need to be as sharp, it will allow me to continue doing other stupid unrelated things and still try and throw down in fitness racing when the races arrive on the calendar 🤙🏼 Huge Canadian contingent down in LA this weekend, congrats to everyone who tested their fitness and especially my top 10 pro athletes @austinazar @oa_jbruce @mariacfecik @adam_the_swim_guy tons of PB’s 🤩. Memorable finish to my 30s 💙💪 On the eve of my 40th bday, this weekend I had the privilege to compete in Hyrox LA, alongside some of the top hybrid athletes from 🇨🇦 and around the 🌎. Did 🇨🇦 ever put Hyrox on notice this weekend or what 💪 Had a great race, finishing 🥈 in my age group and 7th overall in the pro men's at 1:04.40. Happy to see my run times come down with all the run work put in the last few months. Big congrats to my unstoppable wife @melaniedeckelbaum and @lilydeckelbaum for smashing their previous PB in the women's doubles, and finishing 🥉 in their AG. Props to fellow 🇨🇦s @mariacfecik and @austinazar (both🥇overall and 🇨🇦 pro records), @mike.fecik and @jaywest_running (🥇doubles), @oa_jbruce & @isaacsanderson18 (🥇AG pro), @kaytisi (🥈AG pro) as well as all the other athletes. 🇨🇦’s second HYROX Sprint event is happening this weekend at 🇨🇦’s 1st HYROX affiliate @holisticathletefcclasses in Burlington, ON. For those new to HYROX aka The World Series of Fitness racing: started in 2017, this global phenomenon is growing rapidly all over the world but has yet to officially launch in 🇨🇦. Many Canadians have travelled abroad to race, but we think that 🇨🇦 will have our own event very soon 🤞 A HYROX event consists of 8x 1km runs with 8 different functional exercises after each run including 1km ski erg, heavy sled push, heavy sled pull, burpee broad jumps, row erg, farmers carries, weighted lunges, and lots of wall balls to finish. The Sprint event is basically a half HYROX (500m runs and half the reps/distances). Back from an incredible weekend away in New York competing in my third Hyrox race. I did this race in the Doubles category alongside my fierce Mom @lilydeckelbaum placing 2nd in our category🥈. Beyond proud of our finish and am so grateful for the opportunity to have done it with the person that means the world to me💕. The person who inspires me, motivates me and encourages me to never give up and push a little harder when things get tough💪. Unlike other Hyrox races I've done, this one was was set apart as I also got to share it with my fellow @olympia_performance crew🇨🇦🔥.
