👀 Don’t blink or you’ll miss Sam Brooks’ incredible new public artwork in Topham Mall Arcade, on the outer wall of the City of Adelaide Archives office. The mural, ‘Don’t Blink’, is a deeply layered visual journey through time, celebrating the @cityofadelaide – past and present. With access to the City of Archives Collection, @sambrooksartist researched the earliest recorded imagery of iconic Adelaide sites, juxtaposing these with modern photographs to combine old with new. Artificial intelligence restoration tools and historical colouring tools were used by the artist to bring the early images to life. Make sure to pay it a visit today! The mural coincides with this month’s @historyfestival and was delivered in partnership with the City of Adelaide by Guildhouse Professional Services. We're celebrating South Australia's @historyfestival at Centennial Park. Does anyone remember attending a service in Centennial Park’s original Chapel building? Built in 1955, and extended in 1965, this was the location of the original crematorium and two service rooms, accommodating over 300 people. The building was designed by Gordon Brown, who also designed the original cemetery layout and was the Park’s architectural adviser for approximately 25 years. Gordon was the father of South Australian Premier Dean Brown (1993 – 1996). The original crematorium and chapels were located where our function rooms and @wildflowers_cafe sit now. In 1983 a new crematorium was built in a different location and in 1986 the Jubilee Complex replaced the original chapels. 📸 Image: The Original Memorial Chapels and Crematorium, Centennial Park records #SAHistoryFest #HistoryFestival #SAHistoryFest2024 #Power #CentennialParkAdelaide #CentennialParkCemetery #Adelaide #SouthAustralia

May at Centennial Park means we celebrate South Australia's @historyfestival! After serving in WWI, Wally Shiers joined the Vickers Vimy crew as a mechanic. Together with Jim Bennett and aviator brothers Ross and Keith Smith, Wally took part in the Air Race of 1919. They achieved the first official flight from England to Australia, the longest endurance flight in the world, taking 28 days. On the last stop, the engine had troubles and Wally fixed a cracked pipe with chewing gum to get the plane back in the air. Wally was buried with military honours in our designated military personnel area, Derrick Gardens. 📸 Image: Wally Shiers ~1918, State Library of South Australia, B 6100 The Vickers Vimy Crew ~1920, State Library of South Australia, b2189949 #SAHistoryFest #HistoryFestival #SAHistoryFest2024 #Power #CentennialParkAdelaide #CentennialParkCemetery #Adelaide #SouthAustralia

The month of May 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Monte Cassino. On May 18, 1944, the final breakthrough paved the way for the Allies to march north and liberate Rome on June 5, 1944, marking the beginning of the end for the German occupation of Italy. The long and bloody Battle of Cassino from January to May 1944 came to define the entire brutal Italian campaign of the Second World War. Join @JamesHolland1940 as he takes a look at those dark days from both sides, drawing on the very latest academic thinking on how and why it played out as it did and drawing on contemporary sources to evoke a vivid picture of what it was like for the men – and women – caught up in this terrible campaign. CASSINO '44 - Friday 28th June. Book your tickets via the links in our bio. Sponsored by @lovereadinguk in the @hiscox_uk Tent. #MonteCassino80th #WWII #HistoryFestival #SecondWorldWar #Cassino44

Beautiful Bantry town, birthplace of Tim Healy on this day 1885. Now a somewhat obscure figure, in his day Healy was a politician and campaigner of note. First elected as an MP for the Irish Parlimentary party to the British Parliment in 1883, in 1886 he devised the stragegy of the Plan of Campaign. A resuumption of the Land War, the Plan of Campaign aimed to secure better rents and conditions for Irish tenants against the rack-rent and absentee landlords of the era. Parnell's affair with married woman Kitty O'Shea resulted in his ouster as Irish Parlimentary Party leader in 1890. Healy, despite his previous strong relationship with Parnell was a vocal and public critic of the uncrowned King of Ireland, for which many in the country bore him great resentment. The sentiment even prompted a nine year old James Joyce to pen a (now lost) poem entiteled Et Tu, Healy. Healy never fully reconciled with the IPP and withdrew from frontline politics. In the aftermath of the Easter Rising he provided legal services to a number of republicans and their families. After the signing of the Treaty and the foundation of the Irish Free State, Healy was appointed the first Governor-General, serving in that role until 1928. He died in 1931 and is buried in Glasnevin. #westcorkhistoryfestival #westcorkhistory #irishhistory #corkhistory #westcork #19thcenturyhistory #19thcenturyireland #20thcenturyhistory #20thcenturyireland #onthisday #onthisdayinhistory #irishpolitics #irishpoliticalhistory #historyfestival #history #historyfest #westcorkfestivals #purecork #corkfestival #westcorkviews #bantry #bantrybay #bantryhistory #wildatlanticway

Object highlight from the Migration Museum collection: This clay house was made by Sayed M Hussaini, a Hazara man who fled Afghanistan in 2001 when the Taliban came to power. In 2003 Sayed, and other Afghan refugees living in Murray Bridge, participated in a community health program. The group met weekly to share food, the day to day challenges of life in a new culture, and stories of home and family. The men created artworks that told of home, the perilous journey to safety, and life in Australia. This model represents the traditional Afghan building that Sayed, and the family he was forced to leave behind, called home. You can learn more about refugee stories at Migration Museum's upcoming author talk with award-winning journalist Melinda Ham, this Sunday 19 May 2pm - 3pm. Melinda will talk about her new book The Lucky Ones - Stories of Australian Refugee Journeys. We're celebrating South Australia’s @historyfestival at Centennial Park. In the early years after the opening of Centennial Park, there was resistance from customers and undertakers, particularly to the ‘newness’ of the cemetery. The newly planted trees had not yet been established and as you can see from the photo, the land looked quite bare. By the end of the first year, there had only been thirty-four burials. Positive press was actively sought to increase numbers. On Tuesday 6 December 1938 an article “Garden Cemetery at Springbank”, was published which praised the ‘park-like’ atmosphere and the tree planting scheme, ‘adding to the picturesque appearance of the new grounds’. 📸 Image: The Advertiser, Tuesday, December 6, 1938. 🚗 Broadcaster and car enthusiast, @jamesmaybloke has spent a lifetime making an intimate study of cars. Having travelled the world and driven more types than almost anyone else on the planet – perhaps two others excepted – he still has not decided whether we should ever have bothered driving any of them in the first place. He intends to have reached a conclusion by the time he walks on stage and has a chat with @jamesholland1940. THE CAR: DID WE GET IT WRONG? Sat 29th June. 🎂 Happy 185th birthday Strathalbyn! The town in the ‘valley with a river’ is celebrating 185 years of European history this year. 🙌 Angas Mill then (c. 1900) and now. ⏱️📅 This building is the Angas Mill in Strathalbyn which is currently under refurbishment and conservation. The Mill was built in 1849 for Donald Gollan. William Colman took over the Mill in 1851 and ran it until 1881. Robert Johnston purchased the Mill in 1881 and it stayed in the Johnston family until 1928 when Friedrich Laucke became the owner. In 1935 Friedrich’s son Hans became the manager and subsequent owner until 1963, when the Laucke Mill was moved to Callington Road, where it still operates today. Should you visit the town and look carefully, ‘W.&.A. Johnston’ lettering can be seen below the Laucke Mill lettering it has been over written with. The old Angas Mill building is still standing and in 2023 considerable refurbishment was commenced. It is unknown what the future will hold for this beautiful building. A comprehensive history of the Angas Mill is available for loan in the History Room at Strathalbyn Library. ▶️ For more information about the scheduled activities for Strathalbyn’s 185th, visit Council's website (link in our bio). 📷 c. 1900, Photograph, B 28919 📷 Photo C2024 Angas Mill, taken by us in March 2024

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ HAPPY DAY To all the mothers, maternal figures and excellent role models in your life, Happy Day! About this piece, Sera Waters shares: “’Golden embrace’ riffs of a 2022 artwork where I also used gloves, titled ‘Got You’. This prior work imagined a multi-generational matriarchal hug from the women of my family lines arranged into a wreath form; a form of mourning but also honouring their generations of care. ‘Golden Embrace’, by contrast, incorporates individually crafted leather leaves and responds to the early Barossa frames which feature master-crafted leather leaves and foliage. As well, this artwork also evokes wreaths which are prevalent in many of the German Barossa anniversary celebration kits and the like; made in honour of passing time and family connectedness.” This work in on display as part of ‘Stability, Grace, Endurance: Hand Crafted in Early Barossa’ at the Barossa Regional Gallery from 12 April to 3 June 2024. Pictured: Sera Waters, Golden Embrace, 2024, repurposed gloves, cotton, and leather, 64 x 42 cm irregular. Found my Stobie pole portrait in Morphett Vale! Even Mum approves. Happy 100th anniversary to the structures that stood tall over us all and lit the way for a century (and counting). Thanks to @historyfestival for the opportunity to be part of a moment in time and for @jvdkphoto for the photography wizardry. My portraits don’t have a moustache on them (yet) and it was nice to bump into a few locals. They love their little pop of suburban street art. You even put me near a suburban cellar door - thank you. South Australia’s History Festival runs throughout May 2024 and its theme is POWER. The History Trust of South Australia has taken portrait photographs of South Australians; one hundred faces who together form part of South Australia’s shared story. In partnership with @sa_powernetworks and in celebration of the 100-year anniversary of the Stobie pole, these portraits are on display as paste up posters on 100 Stobie poles across 10 different state councils. #history #historyfestival #southaustralia #portrait #blackandwhite #blackandwhitephoto #streetart #sahistoryfestival #southaustralianhistoryfestival #roadtrip #power #womenpower

According to a recent poll 1 in 5 Americans believe Taylor Swift is tied to a deep state plot to re-elect Biden. One of the most popular conspiracy theories of our time is the existence of the “deep state,” in which an unelected cabal pull the strings of government to achieve their secretive agenda. However, the concept of the deep state is nothing new. Best-selling historian Dan Jones and Calder Walton, a world leading expert in intelligence and national security, discuss the deep state from the fourteenth century to the modern day, and examine to what extent the course of history has been influenced by this invisible force.
