Today I am posting a 1996 video of me from college, living on my own for the first time. I had just moved to Central Florida and all the vacation spots I grew up going to were right at my doorstep. I was super enthused! There were so many free options for a poor 90s college kid to enjoy: Old Town, Church Street Station, Disney Hotels, Mercado, Pointe Orlando, and the Disney Village Marketplace. In this video, my friends and I are playing around at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. You will see the old Food & Fun Center, which is now Steakhouse 71. Did you know that there is a 10-story MARY BLAIR mural in existence? Unlike the two amazing MB murals at Disneyland’s Tomorrowland which were destroyed and replaced in the 90’s by the morons at Disney, this one still exists! It is at the Contemporary Resort Hotel next to the Magic Kingdom in Florida. I am in Orlando for a couple weeks and was helping out at the company where my brother works. I had a delivery to the Contemporary lobby and had to go upstairs and check out the mural. Inspired by the landscapes of the American southwest and the traditional art and dress of Native Americans, it has multiple sides and is known as the Grand Canyon Concourse mural. It was completed in 1971. You might recognize the design style from Disney’s Small World, which was guided by Blair. She also did some of the best concept art of the 20th Century working on animated films such as Peter Pan, Cinderella, and Alice in Wonderland. Look her up if you’re not familiar with her work. Since today concludes the Day of the Dead for 2021, I am posting a video of Mariachi Cobre from the Mexico pavilion at Epcot. Mariachi Cobre has been an Epcot staple since opening day Oct. 1, 1982. We sadly lost a lot of entertainment acts around the World Showcase after Epcot closed down in 2020 due to the pandemic. When the park reopened Mariachi Cobre was one of the few groups that returned, and they got to play in the American Gardens Theater. For almost 40 years this group has brought the joy and heart of mariachi music to Epcot’s world travelers. Mariachi Cobre began in 1971, in Tucson, Arizona. Guitarist Randy M. Carillo constructed Mariachi Cobre from his mariachi youth ensemble with his brother Stephen, Mack Ruiz, and Fancisco Grijalva. The name was formed from the Spanish word for “copper” since Arizona is the Copper State. Before their Epcot days, the group played at Walt Disney World in 1973 at Pecos Bill’s Cafe and at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. . One of my all-time favorite designers is Mary Blair. Her style is so unique and all of her work has made a huge impact on so many of our lives. From “it’s a small world” to Cinderella to the creation of the 5-legged goat in the Grand Canyon Concourse tiling of Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Her art exhibits a raw and unique talent that brings childhood curiosity and sheer brilliance to life. Luckily, during the most recent refurbishment of the Contemporary, Mary received a lot more recognition. Her photo has been included into a vignette dedicated to the towering tiled artwork, and even the 5-legged goat makes an appearance in @choochoojoey’s fun and colorful artwork featured in the lobby. What a thrill it must have been to see Mary Blair’s magnificent ceramic tile mural at Disney’s Contemporary Resort in 1971. Lining the center elevator column on the fourth floor known as the Grand Canyon Concourse, I always find something new each time I visit. Mary’s keen sense of color really pops nearly 50 years later. __ In a 1977 letter, she recalled her impressions upon seeing the mural for the first time: “Of course I had seen the finished tiles [for the Contemporary Hotel] laid out on a large table in sections as Interpace [tile division of Franciscan Ceramics] finished firing the final work.
