A day's stroll around Piacenza (part 2) Cattedrale Santa Maria Assunta e Santa Giustina, including an ascent of the cupola for a close view of the frescoes painted by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as 'Il Guercino' between 1626 and 1627, continuing the work of Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli ('Il Morazzone'). The cupola is accessed via the Kronos Museum, accompanied by a guide, a 27m climb above the floor of the cathedral up worn, narrow steps and over uneven surfaces. Blu Pompeiano, Blu di Puozzoli (Pozzuoli), Blu d’Alessandria, Egyptian Blue…sky blue. Colours in ancient times primarily came from the earth. Black, brown, yellow and red pigments could be found and extracted from ores or soils and were commonly used. However, blue could not be easily obtained. One source was Lapis Lazuli but this was extremely rare and consequently prohibitively expensive to widely use. The Romans knew blue by the name caeruleum, and both Pliny the Elder and Vitruvius describes it. Vitruvius, in his work De Architectura, states how it was produced by ‘grinding sand, copper and natron, and heating the mixture, shaped into small balls, in a furnace…’ Thereby creating copper silicate, the balls of which you maybe see here that I found on the foreshore. They’re displayed in the broken base of a small coarseware Roman pot. The large chunk is a very recent find , it to could be pigment or maybe glass flux, waste. For quite some time I had not actually been certain what it was. But I recently spotted identical pieces (at least to the ‘ball’ pieces) at the remarkable Roman museum at Caerleon, Wales. These spheres and this chunk of pigment could be crushed (perhaps mixed with other ochres to achieve different hues of blue), a binder then added and then used to complete vibrant ancient frescoes. In Pompeii there are remarkable survivors of the Roman’ masterful work some of which I’ve included in this post. Banquet scene from the House of the Chaste Lovers, Pompeii. The region is flourishing with such intricately decorated havelis since 200 years or more. 🖌️It’s not new that I write about the famed Fresco work of Shekhawati which has spread far and wide across the globe; bringing tourists, travellers and wanderers from around the world to witness this centuries old ornate wall art. 🖌️We take pride in our heritage yet it needs urgent attention, preservation for posterity. Some are well restored, some lie dilapidated in dust. Other existing historical havelis might be under the threat of being replaced by new construction comprising shopping malls, housing of modern kind or bearing the brunt of the hammer for their invaluable mortar and material. It’s like walking through a living museum in the narrow side streets of Orta San Giulio. Taking in the bas relief sculpting, the wood carving and the frescos some as good, if not better, than you’d see in Rome, without all of the graffiti. Mostly dating back many hundreds and hundreds of years, all on the side of this magnificent picturesque lake. Allow me to detail the above for you. 1). One of thousands of beautiful iron Romeo and Juliet balconies that proliferate in this village. 2). Another balcony, but in need of a little TLC. 3). One of simply hundred of originally carved doors, you could fill a book with them. 4). Turn a corner and come up against even more beauty, a lovely little house clad in climbing roses. 5). Every city, town and village in Italy has them, large and small places of worship - this one caught my eye initially because of the colour, and the amazing coquille shell above as if Venus had just stepped out of her shell. 6). On entry you are encased in frescoes and art totally overwhelming. 7). The Church of the Holy Tinity is considered to be the one that best represents Byzantine architecture in Albania. This church was built in the 14th century and is known as one of the oldest churches in Berat. The church is in the Mangalemi neighborhood. Over the years, various damages were caused. In 2016, renovations were carried out in its red dome. Today you can see #frescoes which are in bad shape, with scenes from the Bible and a panoramic view of the Gorica neighborhood, the Berat Promenade and the Ossum River.The church has a cross shaped plan with a dome. It is composed of the nave, narthex (entrance area), and the altar alcove. The features, together with the pyramidal shape, forms, and proportions, give the church a picturesque appearance. The Byzantine architectural elements in the church have been combined with western ones. Inside the church are two columns with reused capitals (thought to have been taken from classical ruins in the city). An inscription inside the church contains the name of Andronicus Paleologus (Governor of the province 1302 to 1326), indicating that the church must have been built during the 13th or 14th century with his financial support. The Dormition Cathedral is an Albanian Orthodox church (b.18th century) in the Berat Castle, dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos. It has been a cultural monument of Albania since 1948. Since 1986, the Onufri Museum of Icons is located in the church, named after Albanian painter of the same name. He was the son of the first artist who introduced the color pink into icon painting. The secret of this color was not passed on and died with him. The Museum holds 200 artwork objects, icons and liturgical items dated from the 14th century to the 20th, brought together from several churches and monasteries of the region. El "Ángel Blanco" (Beli anđeo) es una de las obras más lindas del arte medieval europeo. Se encuentra en el monasterio Mileševa, cerca de la ciudad de Prijepolje. Esta obra forma parte del fresco "Miróforas sobre la tumba de Cristo" que se pintó durante la construcción y la decoración del monasterio en el siglo XIII. El monasterio fue fundado por el rey Vladislav y aquí se encuentran las reliquias de San Sava, el fundador de la Iglesia ortodoxa serbia. Four decades , numerous forts, palaces, haveli’s , villages, old homes , courtyards , lanes that can inspire you at every turn. Old homes and architecture are brought down to construct garish new homes that lack soul and character. Craftsmen are paid peanuts because in our heads we are competing with China and their machine manufactured products replacing some of our crafts with industrial production to match up. Mission Concepcion in San Antonio, TX stands as one of the country’s oldest remaining original stone churches. It took about 15 years to build, and was dedicated in 1755. Beautiful frescoes once covered the walls, interior and exterior. Today only four rooms clearly show remnants of these colorful designs painted over 250 years ago. A few snapshots from my stay in the beautiful city of Ljubljana last week and it's impressive cathedral. It has a really interesting history dating back to 1262, the site has survived and undergone rebuilding, several alterations following fires which burnt it to the ground most notably by the Turks in 1469! A magnificent building filled with mouth dropping frescoes by Giulio Quaglio painted in the eighteen century. What a treat! Saint Nedelya Cathedral(Bulgarian: Катедрален храм “Св. великомъченица Неделя” в София or църква „Света Неделя“, romanized: Sveta Nedelya), is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, a cathedral of the Sofia bishopric of the Bulgarian Patriarchate. The temple of Sveta Nedelya dates back to the 10th century, being a cathedral of the city from the 18th century. The sacred building has suffered destruction through the ages and has been reconstructed many times. The present building of the temple is among the landmarks of Sofia. It was designed by the famous Bulgarian architectural team Vasilyov-Tsolov.
