“Gift for Mandrake” Mythology and the natural world fascinates me, the world of folklore leaves history open in so many mustered and things we have yet to explain, and sometimes there’s natural phenomena that provide an amazing story stronger than fiction, did you know it took me years to find out mandrakes are a real plant and not just something from a Harry Potter movie? Mandrakes are plants known for their human-shaped roots that allude to their name, as well as their hallucinogenic properties that lend themselves to witchcraft and other potions, and the way in which their supposedly formed ((in mythology anyway)) is that their plant like beings grown from human remains, similar to how a #homunculus is made in alchemy. I wanted to do something similar to old #renessaince paintings with emphasis on surrealism, like #williamblake or #fransiscogoya but less graphic XP There are a lot of paintings that depict mythical creatures as monstrous figures as spectacles to gawk at, or others where their tormenting or being killed by people, so to then the tables I wanted to do something set after man’s downfall in which a new species emerges, with a little hint of allegorical reference with the snake and the apple. Made this charcoal piece 13 years ago today, it’s titled Devouring of an Atomic Cloud. It was inspired by Francisco Goya’s painting “Saturn Devouring his Children” it depicts a father named Kronos eating is own son fear that one of his children may take over his power and also I think it depicts a child being defenceless being eaten alive by a monster. For this piece I sort of used that idea not literally but to make it a reference to the atomic bomb, I didn’t want it to look like a usual atom bomb I wanted the bomb to be like a monster just as an abstract entity and the victims of the atomic bomb are being devoured by the smoke cloud caused by the atomic bomb creating a sense of being defenceless and not having to escape. It's been a while since I've posted pics from one of my day trip discoveries! So, here's some from a town I visited recently called Castres. ☀️ It's only a small town but has a few interesting places to see. One being the Goya Museum, which holds mainly artworks by Spanish artists. Some of the more humbling pieces on exhibition were Goya's "Disasters of War" from the 19th century. Given the current war atrocities happening as we breath, it's hard to understand why such inhumane acts still continue when history serves as a reminder of the tragedies of war. 😢 Other interesting pieces were that peacock 🦚, which I fell in love with 😍. The town is pretty in places and was worth the trip. بسیاری بیتوجه به تابلوهای نقاشی هستند،نقاشیها هم میتوانند بهشدت ترسناک باشند و یکی از دلهرهآورترین تابلوهای نقاشی که تا به حال خلق شده، تابلویی نیست جز «ساتورن پسرش را میبلعد» اثر فرانسیسکو گویا، نقاش شهیر اسپانیایی. شاید وقتی که بفهمید این تابلو درواقع ماجرایی از اساطیر روم باستان که چندان هم خوشایند نیست دستمایه قرار داده است، تا حدی هضم آن برایتان راحتتر شود؛ ولی کسی نمیتواند ادعا کند این تابلو را فهمیده است یا حداقل میتواند بهراحتی از کنار آن بگذرد. ساتورن (ساتِرن) از زمرهی تایتانها بود که پیش از خدایان کوه اُلمپ بر جهان حکمرانی میکرد. او با سرنگونی پدرش، کائلوس به قدرت رسیده بود و پیشگویان چنین پیشبینی کرده بودند که سرنوشتی مشابه در انتظار او خواهد بود. یعنی چنین مقدر شده بود که روزی فرزندانش او را از تخت قدرت به زیر کِشند. ساتورن هم برای اینکه جلوی این کار را بگیرد، هر بار که همسرش اوپس، فرزندی به دنیا میآورد، میخوردشان. چنانچه از اساطیر رومی بر میآید، ساتورن فرزندانش را درسته قورت میداد. به همین دلیل ژوپیتر (یا معادل یونانی آن زئوس) پس از آنکه از پدر گریخت، سمی به او خوراند تا برادران و خواهرش را استفراغ کند. بیشتر تابلوهای نقاشی از این صحنه، ساتورن را نشان میدهند که حریصانه مشغول خوردن فرزندانش است. ولی ساتورنِ نقاشی گویا، با شرارههای خشم و نفرتی که از چشمانش میبارد مشغول جویدن فرزندش است. همهجا پر از خون است و ظاهرا فرزندش هم قبلا مُرده و ساتورن تنها دارد لاشهاش را میبلعد. چشمگیرترین نکته در این تابلو چشمان ساتورن است. در نقاشیهای قبلی اثری از همدردی با ساتورن به چشم نمیخورد. ولی در نقاشی گویا ساتورن با ظاهری خشمگین و مضطرب در فضایی پروَهم و کابوسوار به تصویر کشیده شده است و چنان به نظر میرسد که او از آنکه مجبور به خوردن فرزندش شده، به مرز جنون و ازهمگسیختگی رسیده است. شاید این توضیحات نتواند کمکی به درک این تابلوی مبهوتکننده کند. وقتی ماجرا دلهرهآورتر میشود که بفهمید این نقاشی به همراه سیزده نقاشی دیگر مستقیما روی دیوارهای خانهی گویا نقاشی شده بود و تنها پس از مرگ او بود که همگان از آن اطلاع یافتند. یعنی قرار نبود که هیچوقت کسی این نقاشیها را ببیند و تنها برای دلِ خودش دست به خلقشان زده بود. ولی چطور تابلوهای نقاش بزرگ اواخر قرن هجدهم و نوزدهم اسپانیا به این مرحله رسیدند؟#ترسناک #ترسناکترین_نقاشی #فرانسیسکو_گویا #هنرمند #art #fransiscogoya #artist #artgallery #artworks

“Ostracized” Oil pastel on paper 2022 This is one of my favorite and most time consuming pieces I’ve done by far. It was a project I had done for school that spanned over the course of a few months. Eventually the hard work payed off as I got to see my piece at the Pennsylvania State Museum and earned a Scholastic silver key. The piece was inspired the artist Fransisco Goya’s series of “black paintings”.
