Sometimes the views are amazing, but the path to get there is HARD WORK. Today we're hearing from community member Izzy about a challenging hike she has done while out in New Zealand. "I did the Pinnacles Trail (the Kauaeranga Kauri Trail) in the Coromandel Peninsular of the North Island in February. It was so incredibly hard, and I stopped many many times on the ascent. It was my first overnight hut hike, but sunset from the tippety top of the highest pinnacle was phenomenal. It's definitely hardest thing I've ever done. My learnings? I'm so glad I bought poles last minute - I don't know how I'd have got down without them! It was a bit of a makeshift affair, I bought the sleeping bag at an op-shop the day previous, used my 25L pack from home, and hauled way too many tins cans up that mountain Stats were: 4-5 hours up, 12km, 800m elevation." #EveryDayAdventures #AllBodiesAreGoodBodies #GetOutdoors #FatAndOutdoorsy #EveryBodyOutdoors #PlusSize #WomenInAdventure #GetOutside #PlusSizeOutdoors #WanderWomen  #WomenWhoWalk #SunnyWalks #FatGirlsHiking #HikingUK #WalkYourWay #UKHikers #WomenWhoHike #HikerBabe #WomenInAdventure #UnlikelyHikers

Next hike! Cathrine Creek Arch and soak at Society Hotel in Bingen, May 25th. 2.3-miles & 350’ elevation gain. The soak is for an hour from 1:30-2:30, cost $30, I will email you about payment. This is my first time doing this hike and to the pools at Society so I decided to keep the group small. This way we can scout the area out and see if it’s a good fit for future outings. The ticket sales end May 20th and you need a password: Light Shifts, to get access to the Eventbrite info. I will be sending an email for payment and explanation of refund for the spa fee, $30. Final bit of info, normally I don’t do a schedule but for this event there will be a tentative one: Hike 8:45 to noon Bring a Lunch for a Picnic: noon to 1pm picnic location TBD Soak: 1:30-2:30 We live on Native Land and they are still here. They’re our neighbors, coworkers, family and friends. I’ve been a big fan of @indigenousbookshelf for their book suggestions. Definitely follow if you’re looking for great book recommendations. If you’re not able to buy a book recommended by them ask your local library to carry it. The Libby app is also a great resource for getting audio books. Cathrine Creek Arch is on the native lands of the Cayuse, Walla Walla, Umatilla, Wasco, Washram, Yakama, Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Grand Ronde and Siletz. @fatgirlshiking #trailsnotscales #fatgirlshiking

Wir haben heute den Wander-Halbmarathon am Donnersberg geschafft. 💪🏻 20km über 651 Höhenmeter hat ganz schön Kraft gekostet. Ob ich nächstes Jahr die 42km mache - I doubt it! 🩷 . . . #donnersberg #wandermarathon #donnersbergwandermarathon #wanderlust #fathiker #fatandoutdoorsy #dogcontent #hovawart #hikingadventures #hikingwithdogs #fatgirlshiking

Hike 24/52 Length: 3.8 Ascent: 32ft Yearly miles: 77.9 ——— Today I finally got to meet @mainely_alli after nearly three months of trying to get together. She showed me some of her favorite coastal spots and got me out in the sunshine on what was, in all likelihood, my last New England hike before heading home next week. It is always such an honor when people choose to share places with me that are special to them. Alli is a naturalist and lends such an interesting perspective to experience the natural world. Today was also a great reminder that hikes don’t have to be long or difficult or even have any elevation gain to be lovely. To top it off, the second hike we did today was on a @nature_org property. I’ve hiked numerous #tnc managed properties and they are always beautiful and unique. This one was no different. ✨ I FLY WITH THE STARS IN THE SKY- If you thought I was done, my dreams have no limits and I’ll be here for a while. I AM NO LONGER TRYING TO SURVIVE- You thought you could break me, get your lick back. Think you haven’t hurt me? I made it through what has been the worst April ever in my life. I BELIEVE THAT LIFE IS A PRIZE- This is why I continue to get back up. I’m climbing out from this hell of a month. I’m proud of you too for making it through 💕 BUT TO LIVE DOESN’T MEAN YOUR ALIVE- I wish you more than these perfectly edited, polished, superficial Instagram squares. DON’T WORRY ABOUT ME AND WHO I FIRE- Relationships are hard. Changes and losses aren’t always bad. It’s sad, but that’s just God making space for better 🙏🏼 I GET WHAT I DESIRE, ITS MY EMPIRE! My goals and aspirations are bigger than most so of course it’s going to get lonely at times. But it’s all worth it!

Hike 23/52 Length: 3.4mi Ascent: 843ft Yearly miles: 74.1 ——— I absolutely was not going to hike today. I told people that. I went to bed last night thinking that. Hell, I woke up this morning still thinking I wouldn’t. Then my feet got itchy and my brain got twitchy and I had to go despite the miserable forecast. I’ve seen notably few waterfalls during my time in New England. There just aren’t that many on the coast and it’s been too snowy to go into the mountains. Today though, with rain in the forecast preceded by several days of 50+ degree weather, I decided to go. Yes, I did drive four hours round trip to only hike 3.4 miles. But I saw four waterfalls so that counts for something right? And the big one, Arethusa, literally took my breath away. I rounded a bend in the trail and my jaw literally dropped. I think I said “wow!” out loud. I didn’t know waterfalls could be this big in New Hampshire. It was absolutely incredible. To top it off, I only saw a handful of people on the entire hike. I know this trail gets super crowded, but the rain worked in my favor today. On the hike out I took a spur to Bemis Falls, Coliseum Falls, and Fawn Pool— a long sliding cascade that ends at what I’m sure is a lovely dipping spot in warmer weather. This entire hike was lovely, with the forest shrouded in mist and rain drops suspended in action on the tips of evergreen needles. I got soaked in a downpour about halfway through and had a tough time getting good photos after that, due to everything being soaked and water droplets constantly falling onto my lenses. I didn’t care. The rain was cathartic and felt good on my skin, even if it left me shivering by the end. I had no intention of hiking today, but my soul knew hiking was exactly what I needed. ——— 📷 mostly @gopro and some iPhone shots 📍this is Wabanaki & Abenaki land . . . . . #Girlswhohike #allwomenalltrails #liveyouradventure #hikelikeagirl #adventurelikeagirl #optoutside #forceofnature #sweatydirtyhappy #fatgirlshiking #fatandoutdoorsy #takingupspaceoutdoors #52hikechallenge #offtheclocknurse #travelnurseadventures #whitemountains #newenglandwaterfalls #outtherepodcast #womenwhohike #womenwhoexplore #goprogirl

I started packing today. I have four shifts left on my current contract and I’ll be finished with Maine. Measuring my life in 13-week increments is wild. It’s long enough to begin to feel comfortable, for the novelty to wear off. But it’s too short to see everything, to experience all that a place has to offer. Thirteen weeks is a season, or bits of two if you’re lucky. It reminds me of college, measuring years in semesters. Basing decisions and making plans based on x’s on a calendar. I’d be lying if I said I’ve loved my time here. I wanted to, for sure. I’ve wanted to visit Maine for a long time. I think I came here during the worst possible 13 weeks of the year to be here. Most of the days have been gray and wet and cold. Restaurants haven’t been open. There’s been too much snow to do some things and not enough to do others. Everything is too expensive. But, despite not loving it I think I’ve made the best of my time here. I’ve done a ton of hikes. I’ve made new friends and finally met online friends in person. I’ve made memories in new places with old friends. I’ve seen lighthouses and fire towers and watched storm-fueled waves crash against rocky shores. I learned to use a map and compass, went ice fishing, and rode a snowmobile. I experienced a total solar eclipse. I’ve spent most of my time here wishing to be home, missing my friends and my beloved southern Appalachian mountains. But between the folds of homesickness I’ve found joy in where I am. Nestled among the layers of longing I’ve discovered the elation of new experiences. Maine may not have been everything I wanted it to be, but it’s been something worth doing, and that’s enough for now. One week from today I’ll load everything I came with into my car in preparation for the journey south. One week from tomorrow I’ll work my last shift in the cute little seacoast hospital I’ve called home for the past 13 weeks. One week from Thursday I’ll begin the drive. One week from Friday I’ll be home. ——— 📷 by @k_robin89

Hike 21/52 Length: 1.5 Ascent: 498ft Yearly miles: 66.7 ——— There is a lot to see in @acadianps and I barely got to scratch the surface on my first trip a few weeks ago. I decided to go back this week to knock a few more things off my list. Namely, the rest of the park loop road, including the road to Cadillac Mountain, had opened for the season. @k_robin89 decided to meet me there, and we spent Thursday evening driving along the park loop road. Friday morning we hit Bar Harbor, then hiked the Beehive Trail (not dog friendly!) before driving up to the summit of Cadillac Mountain. I also did the Summit Path loop around Cadillac. This hike’s total mileage is a combination of the Beehive trail and Summit Path. Beehive trail was a super cool jungle gym of ladders, rails, and cliffside paths. I LOVE trails like this and had an awesome time navigating up the steep cliffs. Cadillac Mountain was overrated in my opinion. It was already crowded even this early in the season, and while there are nice views from the top I felt that pretty much all the other hikes I’ve done here had better views. ——— 📷 of me by @k_robin89 📍this is Passamaquoddy, Wabanaki, Abenaki, & Penobscot land . . . . . #Girlswhohike #allwomenalltrails #liveyouradventure #hikelikeagirl #adventurelikeagirl #optoutside #forceofnature #sweatydirtyhappy #fatgirlshiking #fatandoutdoorsy #takingupspaceoutdoors #womenwhohike #americasbestidea #acadianationalpark #offtheclocknurse #travelnurseadventures #52hikechallenge #outtherepodcast

As planned, a walk up and down and back up again on Glastonbury Tor today! Blew away some cobwebs. The Tor might only be an 85m climb, but it's a steep 85m so it's a workout whichever way you go. Today, I hiked over the tallest mountain pass in the world: Thorong La pass. At 5,416 meters (17,769 ft) in altitude, it is the highest in elevation that I have ever hiked to. And I would be lying if I said it was easy. I woke up at 4AM and started my ascent from High Camp at 4:45AM. Even though the elevation gain was only 586 meters (1924ft) I had to take many, many short breaks, and it took me almost 5 and a half hours to reach the pass marker. But the good thing is that I did not experience any symptoms of altitude sickness. I am just a slow hiker. If you think the hardest part is over after you reach the pass, you then have to descend 1616 meters (5301ft) to the city of Muktinath. There were some sections of the descent that were really steep. The entire hike took me under 11 hours, which included a 25-minute break at the pass marker. Luckily there were other people there to snap some photos for me. It was quite windy and cold at the pass, and I pretty much kept all my layers on the entire day, including my gloves. It took me 11 days from Ngadi to Muktinath, with a side trip to Tilicho lake, and I did it solo without a guide or porter. The trail is well-marked, people are very friendly, and I’ve seen so many familiar faces. Most of the Nepalese porters and guides know of me, and many of them will say hi when they pass me, giving me words of encouragement. I am pretty sure I will always be turtle-paced, but one step at a time, slowly but surely. It might take me a bit longer than other people, but I hike for myself. I enjoy the landscape, the scenery, the locals and people I’ve met along the way, and of course, the challenge. I will always remember seeing the Thorong La pass marker, and I am proud of myself for finishing this section of the Annapurna circuit. Here’s to more hikes, stunning mountains, beautiful landscapes, lovely trail buddies, and priceless memories. 📍Thorong La Pass, Nepal #Travel #Travelgram #Traveling #TravelTheWorld #SoloTravel #Hiking #UnlikelyHikers #FatGirlsHiking #Nepal #AnnapurnaCircuit #Mountains #Outdoors #Adventure

Hike 20/52 NH Firetower #7 Length: 4.2mi Ascent: 330ft Yearly miles: 65.2 ——— Despite being completely and utterly exhausted from working several shifts in a row, I HAD to get out and enjoy the finally beautiful and mostly warm springtime weather today. @trailchaserofficial is working on several New England hiking lists and had a few near the coast she needed to check off. We decided to piece together a big loop hike at Stratham Hill Park that included a fire tower, and then stop at Great Bay Discovery Center to do the boardwalk trail. Mileage totals listed above are the two trails combined. Soaking in the sunshine and marveling over budding trees and spring flowers felt wonderful. It finally feels like the dreary winter is loosening its grip on the seacoast region. I’ll be leaving Maine in three weeks, and admittedly feel like I’ve missed out on so much due to the season and bad weather. I’m making the most of the time I have left, however. I have several hikes planned for the remainder of my time here. Oh! And first 🐍 sightings of the season! Two small garter snakes (non-venomous, harmless) slithering in the sun. ——— 📷 by @trailchaserofficial 📍this is Wabanaki, Abenaki, Pentucket, & Pennacook land . . . . . #Girlswhohike #allwomenalltrails #liveyouradventure #hikelikeagirl #adventurelikeagirl #optoutside #forceofnature #sweatydirtyhappy #fatgirlshiking #fatandoutdoorsy #takingupspaceoutdoors #womenwhohike #womenwhoexplore #52hikechallenge #outtherepodcast #travelnurse #offtheclocknurse #travelnurseadventures #nhhikes #seacoasthikes

#Repost @fat_people_hiking_bayarea ・・・ Our next April hike is at Lafayette Reservoir and will be led by @serenades.and.sass ❤️ Forecast is looking good so far, and we’ll be there rain or shine🤗 🗓️ Saturday, April 27, 11AM 📍 Lafayette Reservoir 🐕 Dogs allowed on leash 🅿️ $7 parking fee. Carpooling encouraged, link in bio. 😷 Mask Required 👃🏻Fragrance Free (see Next Hike highlight) 🌸 Community member event (see Legend highlight) 😷 COVID Precautions - Practice community care and take a negative COVID test day-of. This is a mask required meet up! As always, please stay home if you are sick, have symptoms or any recent exposures. 📍 Trail Meet-Up Spot - We will meet between the two planters in front of the reservoir (see picture with the lovely @fatamydoesyoga modeling the spot!). There are several bathrooms available along the trail, about every 0.5 miles or less. 🅿️ Accessible mainly by car. Closest BART station is Lafayette, about 2 miles away from the trail, but could coordinate a carpool pick up from BART you need! 🥾 Trail Info - This is considered a MID-IMPACT hike. We will be doing part of the full loop trail, going out-and-back for a total of about 2 miles. Although most of it is gentle, there are just a couple of moderately steep (AllTrails says 170ft elevation gain) hills that we will take slowly. The trail is fully paved and wide (usually around 8 ft) with ADA compliant, wheelchair accessible bathrooms and benches at several points along the path. There is quite a bit of shade with some sunny spots, and beautiful views of the reservoir. It is a popular spot for birding, fishing, and kids/dogs, so expect there to be some trail traffic. Also expect lots of delightful moss, ferns, and mushrooms! 🧺 Folks are invited to a picnic lunch on the benches at the end of the trail. Bring your own lunch, and snacks to share if you wish! 🎒 What to bring 🎒- As always we recommend water, sun protection, trail snacks, layers, and any mobility devices that support you. In addition, bring a sack lunch if you plan to stay after the hike for the picnic. #fatcommunity #fatpeoplehiking #unlikelyhikers #fatgirlshiking #mybodytookmehere

Can’t you just hike faster? Well, yes and no. I don’t talk about my chronic illness much on this platform, but asthma is the primary reason I can’t hike faster. Yes, my legs can move faster. Yes, my cardiovascular fitness is high enough that my heart can handle the increased exertion. Yes, my lungs can move enough oxygen to fuel my brain and body at a faster pace. Yes, my muscles are strong enough to push me up mountains faster. But no, I can’t actually hike faster, at least not sustainably. Why? Because I have a chronic inflammatory airway disease: asthma. And my asthma is exercise-induced. What that means is that the higher my heart rate gets, and the longer it stays high, the smaller my airway becomes. Through improving my cardiovascular fitness, primarily by hiking, I’ve been able to come off of every single daily medication I used to take for my asthma (I took four meds daily at one point). My asthma is considered well controlled, and I only use a rescue inhaler as needed. On Tuesday I hiked with a group of other wilderness navigation students and instructors to the top of Cathedral Ledge. I knew when the instructor said “it’s about a 25 minute hike to the top” that we’d be holding a much faster pace than I’m used to. The distance was about 1.25 miles. Normally it would take me 35-40 minutes to hike a mile and a quarter uphill. I put my head down, did my breathing exercises, and told myself I could do anything for 25 minutes. And I did. I made it to the top without stopping, mostly stayed caught up to the rest of the group (of much stronger hikers), and I’ve paid dearly for it for the past five days. That one 25 min push left me coughing for the remainder of the day, wheezing for the next three days, and with chest tightness and decreased lung capacity still today. What I learned in that 25 minutes is that just because I can doesn’t mean I should. It’s taken me a lot of years to come to terms with my slow pace. I’m still extremely self-conscious about it. It still frustrates me to no end to do this day after day and week after week and never get better or faster. But this is my pace. I’ll get there when I get there.

Pigeon Swamp Preserve, Lebanon, CT Chunky Rating: Easy Trail Length: 2.5 miles Elevation: 164ft Time it Took: 60 Minutes 🦮 Dogs allowed 🚽No bathrooms 📱Good service (Verizon) 🚗 Street parking 💰no fee Pigeon Swamp Preserve is a small, wooded nature preserve in the quiet corner of Connecticut. The name Pigeon Swamp refers to the passenger pigeons whose flocks once filled the skies before they became extinct. They came to the 40-acre marsh and feasted on beech nuts, abundantly provided by the adjacent thick stands of American beech trees.Of historic interest are the remains of an old house foundation, mill, dam and sluiceway on Pigeon Swamp Brook. A grist mill was in operation there as early as 1777. The preserve is being managed primarily as wildlife habitat, and ongoing restoration of old pastures may be observed. Trail conditions were well...swampy! Lots of mud, sticks and skunk cabbage budding. This nature preserve is at end the end of a very cute country road. I was worried about the swamp being excessively buggy but to be honest, it wasn’t bad at all. The trail winds through a beautiful and partially moss coated forest under a lot of shade. What’s nice is the trail is very flat up until the very end where there is a slight incline. My only disappointment with the trail is, one the map it indicates a small, off-shoot trail that leads to ruins. Sadly, I took the trail and did not see any ruins, just a nice bench with a view. This trail would be perfect for a beginner looking for an easy to follow path. ✅This adventure is Chubby Hiker Approved. Just a little appreciation for warmer weather and outside adventures. The Boundary Waters (northern MN) continues to be one of my favorite areas. It’s a great area for new and seasoned backpackers alike. Maybe it’s the Michigan roots but I will always love time on/near water. It’s so calming and there’s nothing quite like a still morning on a lake or watching the sunset reflecting off one in the evening. Hike 19/52 Length: 3.4mi Ascent: 574ft Yearly miles: 61 ——— Today I did something I’ve wanted to do for YEARS but have always put off due to being nervous about my lack of skill. I took a backcountry navigation course through @northeastmountaineering. I’m always apprehensive about doing group stuff because I’m almost always the fattest, slowest hiker in the group, and it can be tough to just show up when I know this is likely to be the case. I was nervous about it today, but I went anyway. And I was the fattest, slowest hiker in the group. But I did it! We spent the morning in the classroom learning the basics, then transitioned to the field to put our new skills to the test. The route took us to the top of Cathedral Ledge, back down via a long and boggy bushwhack, and then past Diana’s Baths waterfall. I started the day not knowing how to use a compass and not knowing any of the other people in the class. I ended the day covered in bog mud with holes in my leggings and my hiking dress, a scraped knee, some bruises, several new skills, and a few new friends. Highly highly recommend a course like this to anyone who spends time in the backcountry, and especially anyone who likes to wander off trail. Huge thanks to @bodybyballsack for organizing this, to our guides @northeast_alpine_start and @jake_o_all_trades for imparting their wisdom and not abandoning any of us in the bog, and to the rest of the crew for welcoming me and being patient with my huffing and puffing.
