One of my favorite memories of #Mexico is the sunrise kayak tour with @alantosito 😍🇲🇽 I was fortunate to be the only participant, allowing us to enjoy the peace and nature in the heart of Mexico City. This experience is also tied to my scariest moment in Mexico: arriving at the pitch-black port just before 5am 😱Even the taxi driver wouldn’t leave me there alone (for a fee, of course) 😄I later found out there was a police station nearby. We launched the kayaks in the dark and set off. It was cloudy that day, so the sunrise wasn’t as spectacular as @alantosito knows it to be. Nonetheless, I found it beautiful and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Mindelo is a major port city on the island, Sao Vincente, lying on Porto Grando Bay. The city became known for its incredible Carnival celebrations and colonial architecture from its Portuguese roots. The local musician, Cesoria Evora is the Cape Verde symbol. Evora’s fame spread worldwide because of her Morna music style, that became the national music for Cape Verde. I loved the incredible Cesaria Evora mural on the back of the Mindelo Library. It was created by the world-renowned Portuguese street artist, Alexandre Farto, who goes by the name Vhils. Like his other murals around the world, he scrapes off the paint from the wall in a low relief displaying the art. This open-air market on Praca Estrela is 2 square blocks of stalls with vendors selling African clothing, handicrafts and souvenirs. I bought an African dress here. The Quintal de Artes is a wanderful place to wander among its courtyard, that was a former prison from the 19th century. The cells are now ateliers or art studios, with vendors selling their art. It’s amazing to observe the colorful, artistic exhibits with remnants from Carnival. Sometimes seeing something requires a bit of a delay, especially when it comes to a pink lake. 🎀 Flashback- it’s April 2022 and I’m in Portugal. I hear about these pink salt flats and make a special trip to see them. I walk SO FAR only to find that they’re totally dried up! Now flashfoward- it’s May 2024 and I’m in Australia. I hear about this incredible pink lake and make a special trip to see it. I drive SO FAR only to find… that it’s really pink! After a night in Geraldton and exploring the area in the morning, I drove towards Kalbarri National Park via Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake. During this drive I was praying that the lake would be pink (because depending on the day and sun strength, it sometimes isn’t pink) but told myself that it would be ok if it wasn’t. It was just part of the journey. After a slight detour back to Geraldton after forgetting something at my campsite, I arrived at the pink lake at around 3ish. And boy was I not disappointed. The lake gets its pink hue due to the algae that live in the water. When exposed to sunlight, they produce beta-carotene (found in carrots 🥕) which results in the pink hue we see. I was super giddy with excitement and actually took my new (to me) drone out for a spin. I wasn’t able to go super high due to the wind, but it was spectacular seeing the water from above. Definitely worth the investment and slight hassle of bringing the drone here! Nature is so cool and finally seeing something that I’ve wanted to see for years (just in a different way and in a different country) was truly a surreal experience. Today is one of those kick back and chill days in the sunshine. Yesterday I drove to Paihia, which is 250km north of Auckland. I was surprised by how extremely windong and hilly the roads were. Especially since the road was still a motorway with speed limits 80 or 100 km/h. The locals seem very comfortable at these speeds, but I found it quite stressful to drive. Went on a lovely walk to the Haruru Waterfall today. The track starts next to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and is 5km each way. The Waitangi Treaty is New Zealand’s founding document, an agreement between the British and Maori signed in 1840. However, since there was an English version and Maori translation, there are differences in the documents, which led to disputes in interpretation. 1. & 2. Haruru Waterfall. 3. A bit of grey sheen from the factor 50 mineral sunscreen. Can definitely feel the hole in the ozone layer here. 4. The walk was through a kiwi habitat! I didn’t see any, I read that they are quite shy. They’re endangered because they have a lot of predators. Even dogs often kill them, which is why no dogs are allowed on the walk. Let’s be honest, they can’t fly and they look quite chonky so I guess it makes sense they’re easy prey. Fun fact there are 5 species of kiwi and they live 25 to 50 years!! 5. Tree tops 6. View midway. The forest walk lends nice shelter from the sun. 7. & 8. Walking through the Mangrove forest. This was so cool, I’ve never seen a Mangrove forest before. They only exist in subtropical and tropical areas (like north NZ). In NZ there is only one species of Mangrove tree. You can see the spikes that absorb oxygen when they are exposed to air during low tide. 9. 🔈 The very strange sounds of the Tui bird (all those noises are made by the same bird!) 📍Abel Tasman ⏳️ T-2 On my first big NZ road trip, I set myself a challenge; to walk Abel Tasman as my first solo overnight (camping) hike. I remember being absolutely euphoric and kept catching myself smiling for no apparent reason. This hike is what made me want to do more and more. Once again I was up before sunrise and so I was out and about on a morning walk in Chiang Mai. If you’ve never been to Thailand, you might not know about the humidity but it’s a beast here. At 5:30 am it was at 92%, which means I’m going to be a sweaty mess almost immediately. I passed Wat Rajmontean on my walk and it is a beautiful temple with a large Buddha visible from the street. Built in the 15th century, Rajmontean indicates “Royal Monastery” and its connection to Lanna royalty. Chiang Mai has over 300 wats, more than any other province in Thailand. Most of these temples are in the Lanna style with curved wooden roofs pointing up at the top and date back to the 13th through 18th centuries. Long weekend off before starting the new job on Tuesday 😬🫣. * * Scotland pro tip; most of the blogs I had been reading about visiting Isle of Skye were suggesting staying in Portree as it is pretty central. TBH, I spent a few hours there and it was more than enough. Portree was probably the least charming I encountered while roaming the area. I mean, it wasn’t bad or anything… but if you don’t mind a little extra driving, staying on the outskirts has more pros than cons, in my humble opinion. The accommodations are nicer, the food is better & you can get amazing airbnbs straight on the water for a fraction of the cost. PS. I stayed in Broadford and 10/10 recommend.
