I bet you do. Everybody wants to be happy. Everything we see and hear in the media, online and in person alludes to the message that happiness is the default setting that we should all be on. Or at least chasing. The trouble is that chasing happiness is often just that - a chase. We live in this society where happiness is the only acceptable emotion, and even well-meaning family members “just want you to be happy”. The pressure never lets up! Anything else can be seen as a mental health issue. I often liken our emotions to the weather - all kinds of weather exists, and it’s constantly in a state of flux. It’s normal for emotions to come and go, and like it or not, we come with the full set of emotions, including sadness and worry. Difficult emotions tell us about the things we care about, so they can be useful to listen to sometimes. For example if you constantly feel loneliness, this may mean that social connection is super important to you. Worrying about your performance at work may mean that it’s crucial for you to do your best, to a high standard. All emotions are part of the human experience. All of them. Material possessions won’t increase your happiness. There is no quick cure-all silver bullet. Working towards feelings of contentment is much more realistic and achievable. Normally this is achieved through spending time with people who matter to you, and doing the things that give your life meaning and purpose. Confidence is the willingness to try. Every new part of your life will naturally come with self doubts, and you may at times feel incompetent and inadequate. This is normal. I’ve talked before about these thoughts and feelings holding meaning around showing you what matters to you. In these cases doing a good job matters to you. Remember that being confident is not the same thing as feeling content with a situation. Often it can be quite the other way around - it is the willingness or acceptance of difficult thoughts, feelings and emotions, but not allowing them to control us or hold us back. Being fearful of the unknown is really normal, again, this is a human reaction, but your confidence level will only increase beyond your current level when you are willing to experience the discomfort of delving into something without it. THAT’S how confidence develops. Read that again. Re-learning how to embrace discomfort and fear are so important to how we learn and grow as people is the over-arching key here. These are not sensations to get rid of or avoid, but they are there to show us what’s important to us, and what we want to achieve in this one life. Step in to discomfort, step out of discomfort. Step in to discomfort, step out of discomfort. Step in to discomfort, step out of discomfort. This is how we flex our discomfort muscle, and in turn, develop our confidence muscle. CLIENT TRANSFORMATION 💪 Mega shout out to @iestyn.evans who’s made some big progress working with Cattlestrength this year! 🙌 Iestyn joined with the goal of improving his strength and conditioning, and body composition. As his training had plateaued, he wanted to follow a different style of coaching to mix things up. We focused on a 4 day training split. We bought in some plyometric and Olympic lifting work, something that Iestyn hadn’t focused much on the past. Adaptation to a new approach worked well, with big improvements coming in strength and power output 💥 Each session had a conditioning element at the end, which was progressive week to week. Everyone can experience mental health issues from workplace stress, but farming is one profession that comes with a unique set of challenges that can affect mental health. 🚜 🌾 Eve Klotz, a mental health care provider and second-generation farmer shares that running an agriculture business can be economically stressful. “Stress just carries through your whole life and how you are with your employees. It can affect your decision-making abilities.” UNH Extension wants to help with these issues and has implemented programs to help farmers manage their stress. Extension specialists Seth Wilner and Olivia Saunders have led outreach efforts to provide mental health support to farmers through a program called Farm Strong NH.
