I had a specific location in mind to visit during bluebell season. Emsworthy Mire is known for its stunning display of bluebells in full bloom. When I visited at the start of May, I was disappointed to find no bluebells in sight. However, during my visit last week, I was delighted to see the entire area blanketed in beautiful bluebells. Emsworthy Farm. What a wonderful natural spectacle with the bluebells in full bloom at Emsworthy Mire on Dartmoor! I've wanted to visit for years and we finally managed to go when the bluebells were at their peak. The views from Haytor down into the countryside were spectacular yesterday - entire hillsides turned blue/violet and some others yellow with spring flowers out everywhere. We included a visit to the farm as part of a 7 mile circular walk around Haytor, Houndtor and Saddle Tor. I paid a visit to one of my favourite, more nostalgic sites on Dartmoor, a short drive up from Haytor. The very Cuckoo hotspot that has paid so many dividends over the years, the @devonwildlifetrust Emsworthy Mire. Check out the blog now, and I really hope I got across the excitement and joy of the many seasonal firsts we found up there on that misty Wednesday evening. Also featuring some new, groundbreaking research on female Cuckoo morphs, passed on to me by Sue Williams of the Bird Watching and Wildlife Club, up at @grantarms_hotel , shedding a new light on strategies for their famed nest parasitism (laying their eggs in other bird’s nests). A few miraculous discoveries were made, namely a passerine and a lagomorph (otherwise known as a perching bird and a rabbit!) sat in complete harmony, as well as a rare breeding bird pushed to the brink on Dartmoor, the Curlew. It was only a brief visit to the moorland valley, taking up less than 90 minutes, a chance to get away from school, deadlines and the chaos of the garden House Sparrow scraps, but it repaid our faith with so much to enjoy. Absolutely glorious day today at Emsworthy Mire on Dartmoor! The bluebells are spectacular - I've never seen them en masse in the open before - and the scent is incredible too. Plenty of Dartmoor ponies, dogs and walkers for Pixie to meet - she had a blast and is completely exhausted this evening! We left @willowyoung08 at home revising - two exams tomorrow and still another 16 to go after those 🤯 According to one group of walkers we met, the 'red barn' is the most photographed building on Dartmoor - not sure if that's true, but I can believe it! #memademay2024 Day 7 comes to you from Devon Wildlife Trust’s Emsworthy Mire Nature Reserve where we went to listen for our first cuckoo of the year and we weren’t disappointed. Swipe to the end and turn the sound up if you want to hear one. As we had our homemade creamy chicken gnocchi soup lunch, two flew over. They make a cackling sound as they fly when not calling “cuckoo”! We heard so many birds today up there, including redstart, willow warbler, chaffinch, Siskin, chiff chaff, treecreeper, great tit, yellow wagtail, cuckoo, stonechat, Robin, blackbird, blackcap. Anyway I am wearing another @merchantandmills Union dress in brown lightweight linen made in 2018, like the denim one I posted on Sunday. I’m also wearing a @rowanyarns Felted Tweed DK sweater which I knitted last year. It’s from one of their magazines from about four years ago. It was so beautiful up there today and so many people were up there hiking and bird watching/listening. It was so warm too, just like two weeks ago today on the beach in Portugal. A trip to Emsworthy Mire on Dartmoor last weekend to hunt for the Marsh Violet, Viola palustris. Even on a dull, cool day this is a fantastic nature reserve managed by @devonwildlifetrust . We were too early for the bluebells which will carpet large areas in the next couple weeks, but we did manage to track down some lovely patches of Marsh Violets. It's quite a small violet that seems most abundant growing amoungst the sphagnum moss. More common in the north and west of the UK than it is in the south and east. Also an important food source for small pearl-bordered fritillary butterfly. Other awesome things here include the stone walls constructed with large boulders, the mature sycamore trees, abundant lichens and the constant call of cookoos. Singing to the heavens! Such a small bird, such a loud voice - the inimitable Wren.
This is why a Redstart is called a redstart, from the old Anglo Saxon word “steort” - so literally “red tail”. The male uses his tail to good effect, shivering it rapidly to advertise his presence on territory during courtship. There were several males showing off this morning in the usual spot up on Dartmoor.

I was meant to be going food shopping but there was a dusting of snow on the moor and I had my boots in the car so… I headed to my happy place, the peaceful Emsworthy Mire Nature Reserve. It being an impromptu bimble I didn’t have my camera with me, so obviously had some amazing wildlife encounters. You’ll have to take my word for it that I would have got my best photos ever of a treecreeper and goldcrest. The magical moment though was watching a fox snuffling around the mire, setting a couple of Canada geese honking. I watched for a good 10 minutes - if you look closely it is in the centre of the last photo (distant blurry phone pic). I saw it again on my way back and watched a bit more. I think it knew I was there but wasn’t bothered at all. Even sat and had a good scratch.
