Deer are the largest wild land mammals left in the U.K. Their presence generates income for locals from wildlife photographers, game meat consumers, tourists and hunters alike. Deer herds naturally thrive in open areas and shelter in tree cover. Red deer, in particular, have become synonymous with the Uplands reputation. However, in the midst of a climate emergency and biodiversity crises, the U.K. government is currently under an increased pressure to plant more trees to support rewilding movements and carbon quotas. Tree planting is not cheap though. The process can take decades for a tree to fully mature and one of the biggest threats to vulnerable saplings are our native herbivores 🦌. Annually, the Scottish Government estimates 100,000 deer are removed from wild populations, but recently it has put forward plans for significantly larger culls. According to Forest and Land Scotland, their target is to have 2-7 deer per km2, but 89% of land has deer densities well above this. Aside from large culls, there are also calls for a year round open shooting season on male deer (who are were protected for part of the year). As a result, this has sparked a very controversial debate amongst upland users, locals and people living much further a field. Yesterday I was recording in my little music studio when stu came home from work early. He said he hasn't seen me that happy in ages. He was right. On a creative level music and songwriting has always been something that has created a light within me. I can lose hours in that process. Lately I've been diligent on devoting an hour or so a day to making songs and it's been incredible. Little and often keeps that fire alive. After over a decade away from this I do regret that I ever stopped but, I'm grateful to be back. I say this because I speak to too many people who have written off the things that give them joy as childish or pointless. The idea that if it's not going to make money then there's no reason to do it at all. There is. Your joy is reason enough. You can elbow some room into your life to do the things that put a smile on your face. Creativity does it for me. Right now my heart is on fire with it all! The knock on effect from this is also not to be ignored. When you see where joy is you also see where it isnt. Be delicate with yourself in that process but also understand that joy is contagious. It's an invitation. Your joy invites others to their own. Take some time this weekend to figure out how to leave more room for joy in your day. Deer are the largest wild land mammals left in the U.K. Their presence generates income for locals from wildlife photographers, game meat consumers, tourists and hunters alike. Deer herds naturally thrive in open areas and shelter in tree cover. Red deer, in particular, have become synonymous with the Uplands reputation. However, in the midst of a climate emergency and biodiversity crises, the U.K. government is currently under an increased pressure to plant more trees to support rewilding movements and carbon quotas. Tree planting is not cheap though. The process can take decades for a tree to fully mature and one of the biggest threats to vulnerable saplings are our native herbivores 🦌. Annually, the Scottish Government estimates 100,000 deer are removed from wild populations, but recently it has put forward plans for significantly larger culls. According to Forest and Land Scotland, their target is to have 2-7 deer per km2, but 89% of land has deer densities well above this. Aside from large culls, there are also calls for a year round open shooting season on male deer (who are were protected for part of the year). As a result, this has sparked a very controversial debate amongst upland users, locals and people living much further a field. A small flock of Herdwick sheep at RSPB Geltsdale reserve has been fitted with Nofence collars and set to graze a 26 acre virtual enclosure within a larger 225 acre parcel of land. The #NorthPenninesNationalLandscape team, through the #FellfootForward Landscape Partnership Scheme (2020-24), helped to fund the trial of the Nofence system on the reserve. This year's trial with sheep follows an earlier trial of the invisible fencing system to help manage cattle grazing at the reserve. Alongside conservation grazing, the @rspb reserve team monitor vegetation growth to ensure a mix of sward lengths and plant species that benefit threatened wildlife. The Nofence collars mean that the team can shift livestock around as needed, by creating ‘virtual fences’ for new grazing areas through the reserve.
