In this week's episode of the Healthy Post Natal Body podcast (https://www.buzzsprout.com/836842/14926659) I am lucky enough to answer several great questions from someone who emailed in. Here are the questions I was asked; 1. I'm not sure I'm doing the home workouts right. When there is a spot that says "breathing (lying)" or "(standing)", does that just mean I do the upward motion breath that many times while lying or sitting? And am I supposed to breathe up from my lower abdomen as shown in the breathing video every time I exhale in an exercise? 2. So, I was super diligent the first 6 weeks, but then I had a whole bunch of things come up right after the other and I've been pretty inconsistent for the last 6 weeks. I got all the way through weeks 1-4 and noticed a huge difference in strength and my diastasis gap and then got half way through weeks 4-8. I've done the workouts off and on since then but my gap seems to have digressed and gotten bigger... is that possible or am I imagining it? And if it is possible, how do I stop it from spreading apart again, are there certain motions I just can't do anymore? 3. Are the exercises you have us do in this 12 week program safe for early pregnancy as well, or just for postnatal? 4. And last question, how will I be able to tell once my body is strong enough again and how can I know that my diastasis is healed? (Since it's apparently normal to have a small gap there, I'm not sure how to tell once I've achieved a healthy level of separation.) I answer the question and talk you through how to make sure you can do your hula hoop class safely when you have diastasis recti/or at least a gap. Is it normal to have lower back ache the day after doing some diastasis exercises? It is not uncommon but it's also not quite right as it shows you you're pushing too hard, to the point that your exercise becomes counter productive. Su indicazione del chirurgo al quale si è rivolta, E. mi contatta per iniziare il programma della #tuplertechnique . Durante la visita le è stata riscontrata una diastasi lieve con la presenza di due ernie: una ombelicale e l'altra epigastrica. Le indicazioni del medico sono quelle di affidarsi ad un programma di rinforzo della parete addominale specifico per la diastasi dei retti dell'addome. Non è la prima volta che questo succede: la Tupler Technique in molti casi viene consigliata dagli stessi chirurghi e molto spesso anche per il corretto decorso post operatorio. Gli effetti di un allenamento specifico e mirato come quello della Tupler Technique dopo 6 settimane sono davvero incoraggianti. A livello visivo possiamo sicuramente notare che l'ernia epigastica è meno evidente. Nel frattempo il core è più efficiente e reattivo E. mi riferisce una sensazione di maggiore stabilità. Ancora una volta non possiamo dire di avere risolto! 6 settimane di lavoro sono troppo poche e il corpo ha i suoi ritmi. Miglioreremo ancora e stabilizzeremo i risultati nel tempo. “When can I start running again, Post Baby?” Everyone is different… It isn’t ‘after the 6 week check’, or 12 weeks post section or any other specific time frame that we might be told. Those are basic guidelines in returning to moderate exercise but don’t take many important facts into account about whether your body is actually ready or not. Are you having any symptoms when you run- 💗 Do you leak urine 💗 feel a heaviness or dragging inside your vagina during or after a run 💗 back or pelvic pain 💗 Other joint pain which only occurs when you run. 💗 Or you have started to develop some of these symptoms since returning to running These could indicate a weakness or imbalance. Did you know that we experience a strike of impact through every step that is 1.5-2.5 x your body weight? That’s a lot of force to cope with….⚡️ It’s also a very good reminder of just how important restoring and strengthening your entire core system is prior to returning to these types of activities. To enable a strong and satisfying return. Key areas to build- 💘 Deep core stabilisers (is there Diastasis to work on) 💘 The pelvic floor 💘 Piriformus 💘 The glutes - especially glute med to ensure optimum pelvic stability and injury prevention 💘 Lower back It’s also useful to remember that there are often tight/stick muscles post natal too. These can restrict optimal movement and restrict good running technique. So looking to mobilise the low back, quads, hamstrings, it abs and hip flexors will be an important part of this rebalancing process too, Worried about making that return? Do some simple tests first, such as, hopping on the spot or bounding forward on one foot. Did you feel pain or leaking? As well as doing the ground work just take a very slow and steady approach to your return. You may feel that your cardiovascular system could carry you for a long distance but physiologically your body may not be up to that just yet, Start with slow/steady intervals, gentle pace or walk down the hills and jog/run up them to help manage impact, With a careful approach you will be back to your old pace and distance in no time. So this was my day today. Just an overload of cuteness. It was a beauty afternoon and I’m very lucky that I live near some lovely farm fields that we can walk in. In our Diastasis & Core Consultant Course we talk about nutritional choices to help boost in the rebuilding of collagen and elastin but did you also know that Vitamin C 🍊 can play a big role in strengthening collagen? There is scientific evidence that both Collagen and Elastin can be re-built once damage has occurred. In one study, ’Efficacy of Vitamin C Supplementation on Collagen Synthesis and Oxidative Stress After Musculoskeletal Injuries: A Systematic Review’ it is documented that “Preclinical studies demonstrated that vitamin C has the potential to accelerate bone healing after a fracture, increase type I collagen synthesis, and reduce oxidative stress parameters… Basic science investigations on the biochemical pathways after a musculoskeletal injury have suggested that vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, may enhance collagen synthesis and soft tissue healing.” In another study by Sports Nutritionist Brian Rigby, MS, CISSN, he states, “Without sufficient vitamin C, the body cannot effectively form hydroxyproline, and without sufficient ability to form hydroxyproline the structure of collagen is compromised as the hydroxyproline is replaced with other amino acids that are less capable of twisting. This reduces the strength of the final collagen in the same way the strength of a rope would be compromised if none of the individual strands were twisted or braided together. And just like a weak rope, the weakened collagen breaks easily. When our diet is severely vitamin C-deficient, we produce only weak collagen, resulting in the disease scurvy.” Who would have thought a chat in nutrition is completely viable for helping your clients heal their diastasis?! How do you deliver your nutritional advice to your clients, is it on a client by client basis, do you have a handout you give all your clients, is it a simple chat you sneak into your session?

I started to work more in developing myself in this area so I became a childbirth educator and doula in addition to my work as a physical therapist. SI, YES, OUI, JA, SIM, Да, 言う通りにする ▪️Sappiamo che ci sono dei movimenti (ad esempio i crunch, i sit up, il sollevamento pesi pesante...) che possono provocare una diastasi dei retti dell'addome anche in chi non ce l'abbia. ▪️ Una volta chiusa la diastasi attraverso il programma di esercizi specifici della Tupler Technique®, questi movimenti dovranno continuare ad essere evitati, cosi come quelle cattive abitudini quotidiane che stressano in maniera scorretta la muscolatura addominale e soprattutto la linea di tessuto connettivo che unisce i retti dell'addome (la linea alba). ▪️L'apprendimento della tecnica chiarisce perfettamente anche l'aspetto fondamentale legato alle accortezze della vita quotidiana. Il corretto utilizzo della parete addominale durante l'allenamento e durante le abitudini quotidiane costituirà la polizza assicurativa del risultato ottenuto, evitando il rischio di recidive. Si tratta di adottare sane e semplici abitudini spesso dimenticate. Quelle che dovrebbero tenere presente tutti, non solo chi ha avuto una diastasi. I am going miss my weekly PT date with this lovely lady and her gorgeous little baby as she returns to work. It may be small but I can pack a lot into my Smart car! Yoga mats, pilates balls, resistance bands, 2 children and 1 mummy!👫🙋🚘 All set for the school run then straight to my 9:30am Monday morning ladies Beginner's "Ab Rehab Core Strength" class at the Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall. Starting with lot's of back mobilisation, followed by mat based core exercises using the pilates balls and resistance bands. Lot's of focus on the glutes, an integral part of back care and the pelvic floor (and not a kegal or sit up in sight!). I love teaching this class and have such a variety of ladies that come along from runners to new mummies. Next 6 week blocks start on Monday, 12th.
