Abu'l Hasan Yamīn ud-Dīn Khusrau (1253-1325) was an Indo Persian sufi singer, musician and scholar during the Delhi Sultanate period. Khusrau is sometimes referred to as the "voice of India" or "Parrot of India" (Tuti-e-Hind), and has been called the "father of Urdu literature. Amir Khusrau was a prolific classical poet associated with the royal courts of more than seven rulers of the Delhi Sultanate. He is credited with the creation of Qawali and Tarana and the invention of Sitar. He died in October 1325, six months after the death of Nizamuddin Auliya, his spiritual master and was also buried next to him. This is a part of one of his Ghazals.

Shah Alam II: The Blind Emperor of a Dying Dynasty (Part 2) During Shah Alam II's reign, Mughal rule in North India was largely nominal, with real power held by regional powers. By the late 18th century, Shah Alam controlled only Delhi, which frequently faced threats. In 1783, the Sikhs briefly captured Delhi but did not establish permanent rule due to an agreement brokered by Begum Samru. However, in 1788, Ghulam Qadir of the Rohilla Afghans attacked; he made the puppet emperor Shah Jahan IV and brutally tortured and blinded Shah Alam. The Marathas intervened, freeing Delhi from the Rohillas and restoring Shah Alam to the throne under their protection. Despite his blindness, Shah Alam remained a symbolic figurehead. In 1803, the East India Company defeated the Marathas and took control of Delhi. Like the Marathas, the British maintained Shah Alam as a nominal ruler to legitimize their authority while they managed governance. Shah Alam II remained under British protection until his death in 1806. Caption: @thepunjabarchives #mughalempire #mughal #mughals #mughalart #sikhhistory #mughalhistory #marathahistory #delhisultanate #punjabihistory

Hey I’m Ghengis Khan! I was the leader of the mongol empire and lead them to great success. I built a strong military and used it to conquer neighboring territory’s. Although I am known for my harsh military tactics, I was also very religiously tolerant and accepted the people I invaded as part of the mongol empire. Finally I was able to increase the mongol empires wealth by taking significant amount of valuable gold and materials from empires I defeated. #delhisultanate

This spectacular, rare, royal Sumatran tumbok lada dagger is of the highest quality and most probably was commissioned by a local sultan in North Sumatra as a presentation gift in the 19th century. Sold by us, it is now in the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Saudi Arabia. (length: 34cm, weight: 475g) A similar example in the National Museum in Jakarta was a gift from the Sultan of Deli, North Sumatra, to the Dutch Governor-General and is dated to before 1877. The work shown on the dagger is associated with the Sultanate of Asahan, a Malay sultanate located on the coast south of Deli (now known as Medan). The example here has a single-edged steel blade. The ricasso is covered in high-grade sheet silver, engraved and shaped as a leafy flourish. The hilt is of hippopotamus tooth and deeply and intricately carved with Islamic-Malay inspired leafy scrollwork. Hippopotamus tooth was the preferred medium for this sort of carving because of its particular hardness and glossiness. It was brought to Southeast Asia in the 18th and 19th centuries by Arab traders where it was worked by local artisans. The hand guard is similarly worked. The chape is also of hippopotamus tooth and is carved with some additional leaf scrollwork. The scabbard comprises rings of dark buffalo horn interspersed with fine rings of hippopotamus tooth. This form of dagger became known as a tumbok lada – ‘tumbok’ means ‘to crush’ and ‘lada’ means ‘pepper’. The name is a reference to the shape of the hilt which resembles the pounder to crush pepper corns. 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 (link in Bio) 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀. Prataparudra II was a Kakatiya dynasty ruler who reigned from 1290 to 1323 in India. He was renowned for his military campaigns that expanded the empire's territory and influence. Prataparudra II was also a patron of literature and the arts, contributing to a flourishing cultural environment. His reign ended tragically in 1323 with the invasion of the Delhi Sultanate led by Muhammad bin Tughluq. Despite his downfall, Prataparudra II's legacy endures as a symbol of Kakatiya power and cultural patronage during medieval times in India. . @hyderabadicop @aim_tspsc . . . #indianhistory #telanganahistory #delhisultanate #kakatiyadynasty #upschistory #generalknowledge

The Mosques of Old Delhi In 1648, the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan moved his capital to Delhi, building an extraordinary new city of sandstone and lakhori brick called Shahjahanabad. Today we know it as Old Delhi. The city was adorned with numerous temples, havelis and palaces. But perhaps most beautiful of all are its mosques. Most visitors to old delhi know of the grand Jama Masjid, the imperial mosque built by Shah Jahan at the city's founding (pic 2) Yet there are so many more spectacular mosques dotted around the city, most of which receive only a fraction of the attention. What's fascinating about these smaller community mosques are the characters who commisioned them. Around half of them were patronized by women, while Sunehri Masjid (pic 3) was erected by the city's most prominent Eunuch. At the time they were built, Delhi was considered one of the great pilgrimage sites in the Islamic world. Caravans of pilgrims trekked across the deserts of Rajasthan or the scrub of the Doab for just a glimpse of this glittering city Nobles and Nawabs, Begums and Tawaifs went on commissioning these mosques right up until 1857 when the British finally took over the city and ended the Mughal Empire. 1) Ghazi-ud-din Masjid 2) Jama Masjid 3) Sunehri Masjid 4) Fakhr-ul-Masjid 5) Zeenat-ul-Masjid 6) Fatehpuri Masjid 7) Nawab Wali Masjid 8) Hauz Qazi Masjid 9) Rukn-ud-Daulah Masjid 10) Kalan Masjid @mosquesofindia @mosquedaily #mosque #islamicarchitecture #islamicart #calligraphy #delhi #olddelhi #delhisultanate #mughal #mughalarchitecture #delhidiaries #delhiblogger

Qila Mubarak was first built as a 'Kachigarhi' (Mud fortress) by Sidhu Jat ruler Baba Ala Singh in 1763,[2] who was the founder of the Patiala dynasty. Later, it was reconstructed in baked bricks. It is said that the original fort created in 1763 was an extension built on top of an already existing Mughal fortress built by governor Hussain Khan in Patiala. The interior portion of Qila, which is known as Qila Androon is built by Maharaja Amar Singh. #qilamubarak #qilamubarakindia #oldstructuresofindia #fort #monuments #heritage #history #culture #art #raziasultan #delhisultanate #rajputs #archaeologicalsurveyofindia #shotoniphone

Razia Sultana, the first female Muslim ruler of the Indian subcontinent, ascended to power amidst political turmoil and opposition from Turkic nobles. Despite initial support from the general public, she faced challenges to her authority from Turkic factions who resented her attempts to create a class of non-Turkic nobles. Razia's assertiveness and appointment of non-Turkic officers further fueled resentment among the nobility, leading to rebellions and conspiracies against her rule. During her reign, Razia faced internal revolts and external threats, including conflicts with rebellious governors and Shia uprisings. She attempted to consolidate her power through military campaigns and strategic appointments, but her efforts were hampered by persistent opposition from Turkic nobles. Despite her successes in certain military campaigns, Razia's rule was marked by ongoing challenges to her authority and attempts to undermine her leadership. Razia's downfall came with the betrayal of key allies, including her husband Altunia, and the ultimate defeat by her half-brother Bahram's forces. After being deposed and subsequently killed in 1240, Razia's grave became a pilgrimage site, but the neglect of her tomb in modern times reflects the complex legacy of her reign. Despite her achievements as a pioneering female ruler, Razia's story also highlights the entrenched power dynamics and challenges faced by women in positions of authority during her time. . . . #RaziaSultana #DelhiSultanate #FirstFemaleMuslimRuler #MedievalIndia #WomenInHistory #TurkicNobles #PoliticalIntrigue #PowerStruggles #Legacy #HistoricalFigure

Delhi Sultanate under the Mamluk Dynasty, 1206-1290. The rise and evolution of the Sultanate of Delhi during the times of its first ruling dynasty – the Mamluks (also known as the Slave or Ghulam Dynasty), an influential military class of slave soldiers between 1206 and 1290. Following the assassination of the childless Muhammad bin Sam, popularly known as Muhammad of Ghor, in 1206, the Ghurid Sultanate shattered into minor kingdoms ruled by Mamluk commanders. The appointed governor of the Indian territories, Qutb ud-Din Aibak, a Turkic slave general, became the ruler of what was to become the Sultanate of Delhi. Through its turbulent history (until 1526, when the invasion of Babur swept it aside, the Sultanate was ruled by five unrelated dynasties), multiple autonomous states challenged the influence and control of the Delhi Sultanate in the fertile lands between the rivers Ganga and Jamuna, which was reflected in its ebbing and ever-changing frontiers. map by 🐒 simeon.netchev published @whencyclopedia

History of Round Arches Pic-1 Tomb of Fateh Jang (Governor of Mewat during Shah Jahan's reign), Alwar Arches distribute weight evenly, enabling grand constructions without extensive support. Romans invented the Arches as can be seen in their iconic structure like the colosseum in Paris. Out of different types of arches is Round arches which were also invented by the Romans. These were frequently used in a series side by side to create an arcade, mainly used by Romans in building bridges ,aqueducts to transport water and example of such bridges- pont du gard (France). Pic-2 Arches were unknown in ancient India. Hindu architecture was trabiate kind, in which instead of Arc, beams and columns were used to build structures. The first true Arc in India can be seen in Sultan Balban’s tomb built in 1287 AD. Pic-3 After that the arches flourished all around India from Hyderabad to Mysore to Kolkata to Lahore to Delhi everywhere indifferent architecture from tombs to palaces to galleries to entryways of forts everywhere. #ancientrome #rome #roma #history #ancienthistory #italy #romanhistory #romanempire #ancient #archaeology #italia #architecture #archeologia #delhisultanate #delhi #india #history #historyofindia #indianhistory #mughalarchitecture #mughalempire #mughals #heritage #tughlaq #qutubminar #delhigram

🕌✨ The Forgotten Tale of Language and Empire ✨🕌 Did you know the Delhi Sultanate played a pivotal role in shaping the language landscape of India? 🇮🇳✍️ 🔍 A Dive into History: While Persian was already the administrative and literary language of earlier Islamic empires, the Delhi Sultanate pushed its prominence to new heights across the Indian subcontinent. But here's the twist — this historical era didn't just promote Persian; it also laid the groundwork for the birth of a new language: Urdu! 🎉 🗣️ The Birth of Urdu: Urdu emerged from the vibrant camps ("Urdu" in Persian) of the Sultanate’s armies. It's a melodic blend of Persian with local Indian languages, born from the mingling of diverse cultures and peoples under the Sultanate’s expansive rule. 📜 Legacy of Language: This linguistic evolution is a testament to the Sultanate's significant cultural legacy, weaving Persian literary traditions with the rich tapestry of Indian culture. Today, Urdu stands as one of the most poetic and widely spoken languages in South Asia. 🌏 Cultural Connection: Let's appreciate the deep historical roots and the dynamic exchanges that gave rise to the languages we cherish today. Languages are not just tools of communication but bridges connecting ages and cultures. 🌉❤️ #History #DelhiSultanate #Urdu #Linguistics #CulturalHeritage #IndianHistory #Persian #LanguageLovers

On Friday, I had the opportunity to visit The Louvre in the evening for a private night tour of the South Asian exhibits, more specific to the middle ages, with Dr. Jean-Baptiste Clais, the curator of the exhibits at the Louvre. The event was organized by SciencePo alumni association, a special mention to Abhinav and Hannah for this amazing idea and execution. Listening to Dr. Clais, his work, about museums and their collection in general, his passion about South Asian art, history and sculpture, along with his profound knowledge about the Indian subcontinent from that era (which would encompass modern day Pakistan and Nepal as well) , Islamic art in the middle ages and how stones like jade and agate were carved and much much more, it was an experience. I am eagerly waiting for part-2 of this tour... #louvre #sciencepo #alumni #association #islam #art #southasia #mughal #durani #delhisultanate

The Qutub Minar is a magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Delhi, India. Constructed between the 12th and 13th century, it is the tallest brick minaret in the world, reaching an impressive height of 73 meters (240 feet). Commissioned by Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the founder of the Delhi Sultanate, the minaret was initially built to commemorate the Muslim conquest of Delhi and the establishment of Muslim rule in the Indian subcontinent. Its construction began in 1192, with subsequent additions made by Aibak’s successors, including Iltutmish and Firoz Shah Tughlaq. Located in the Qutub Complex, the Qutub Minar boasts intricate carvings and inscriptions in Arabic and Nagari script. Vijayanagara. A light version of the COIN series system, with 3 factions. Very nice to introduce new players to this kind of games. The game itself is very dynamic, low downtime and strong player interaction. Cavalry is very strong and allows you to strongly influence the dice probabilities. Once you can write and spell the name properly, you can definitely enjoy this game! :) #gmt #gmtgames #vijayanagara #delhisultanate #bahmani #middleages #mongol #timur #tamerlan #india #deccan #boardgamegeek #boardgame #boardgames

The Lodi conquest in Delhi lasted from 1451 to 1526. The family was Turco-Afghan, and they brought with themselves, a new and unique form of architecture to the Delhi Sultanate. The Lodi or Pathan styled architecture was a mix of the existing Indo-Islamic styles of the Mamluks and the Tughlaq’s combined with Central Asian and Persian styles- see Indian influences in the architecture of the Tomb of Mohammed Shah(which is visible from Lodi Rd.)- there are Chhratri’s , a staunch Hindu form, for example. The Lodis constructed the tombs in two different forms; one pattern was based on octagonal plan surrounded by arched walkway with one storey in height and the other one was based on square plan without walkway with two or three storey in height- this new form of Islamic architecture was picked up by the Mughals and is today still used in contemporary- Islamic design. The serenity and the mesmerising energy of Lodi gardens is palpable. Here are a few photographs of the Tombs, while on a walk at dusk. #lodi #lodidynasty #lodhigarden #lodhigardens #islamic #islamicarchaeology #architecture #indosaracenicarchitecture #hinduarchitecture #delhisultanate #love
