Away from the maddening crowds of tourists leaning over the edge of Island in the Sky is another place to explore. Dead Horse Point is less populated but equally breathtaking. A rough hewn bench blends with the uppermost layer of sediment and the Navajo sandstone that dominates this environment. Here is a place to rest and contemplate overlapping and sometimes #parallelhistories entangled in this abyss. A vast desert terrain, once the watery playground of dinosaurs until the waves of their Jurassic sea receded, is an intricate sculpture of canyonlands visible from high plateaus. For the first people this was the dwelling place of sacred beings and spirits, consecrated land. Where the two emerging rivers intersected a place for trade and the exchange of communications was established. Ancestral people inscribed the stone walls with messages that remain for us to decipher today. No place like Moab 🫶🏻 There’s something special about this place… sure it’s touristy, but it’s a comfort place that feels like home to us on the road. We know where we like to camp, shower, eat, walk with Willow, park to work, and shop in town. These have become easy, familiar staples that we look forward to each trip. Our last day of our trip was again spent in Utah! This time we visited Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse State Park which were both beautiful! How far in advance should you plan an elopement? Some couples plan their elopement years in advance. Others do it in just days. The main things you need time for from the time you decide to elope to tying the knot are: (1) Get a marriage license! The amount of time this takes depends on the county where you’re eloping. Some counties allow you to this the same day while others require a waiting period. … and that’s it!!! Okay, but maybe you also need to worry about: (2) Getting a permit. Not all elopement locations require a permit, but if they do (e.g. most National Parks), be sure to plan ahead and give yourself 1-6 months to get a permit. Permit processing times depend on the park, with lesser known parks typically being able to offer last-minute permits more easily. (3) How long it will take you to plan your travel to your elopement destination? Maybe all you have to do is grab your camping gear, dog, and hop in the car. Maybe you need to start getting visas ages in advance. (4) Do you want any wedding vendors or traditions? You might be able to get a dress, cake, or ring pre-made and perfect, but typically things like dresses need to be tailors, rings need to be sized, and cakes need to be baked. This couple did all their planning in 4 days. Yes—DAYS! They called and booked us on a Tuesday, ordered a dress from @lulus and flowers from @lingsmoment that day. We picked out a location were we could get a last-minute permit (the perks of being a registered vendor with a few land-management agencies is that some of them allow us to get same-day permits or permits with less than 1 months notice). Saturday we all rolled up in camper vans and made magic happen!

If you happen to be visiting our park in a 4 wheel/AWD vehicle, you owe it to yourself to check out Long Canyon Road. The trail starts just a half mile north of our entrance station and concludes on Potash Road near Jughandle Arch, 15 miles west of Moab, making it a great scenic, (albeit slower) alternative to Hwy 313 and 191. Visitors will tackle tight switchbacks, steep descents, and a narrow squeeze at various points in the trail, so leave your trailer back at camp. It is also highly recommended to ask our rangers about recent rainfall since the trail is mainly dirt and crosses a wash as you near Potash Road. A week ago my wife and I rose before 4 a.m. in Grand Junction, Colorado, and set out on the two-hour drive west to Dead Horse Point State Park in Utah for what turned out to be a thoroughly epic sunrise, complete with dark clouds, dramatic light and even several rainbows. A couple weeks ago @jlbmoulton and I went to Moab and met up with @randy.j.w for a fun Utah desert long weekend. The forecast showed only one day with clouds and I wanted to explore Dead Horse State Park in order shoot with the clouds. That decision bore such wonderful fruit! Dead Horse is a gorgeous place to explore with views of the Colorado River with almost no one else around. In this photo you see me sitting on an outcropping (wearing my new favorite hat). A little "how they make the sausage" moment here is that I was hiding my phone on the other side of my body as I triggered my wireless remote. The early morning light was extraordinary as it streamed through broken clouds above the La Sal Mountains in eastern Utah a few days ago. Stretching at their highest point to nearly 13,000 feet, the snowcapped La Sals stand about 27 miles east of Dead Horse Point State Park, whose rugged, Colorado River-sculpted sandstone cliffs and canyons make up the foreground of this image. The first image in this carousel is a slice of a super-wide panorama of the whole scene, which included one of the brightest, spotlight-like crepuscular rays I've ever seen. The scope and scale of Dead Horse Point State Park is hard to truly comprehend without being there — that's the effect that 2,000-foot drops off sheer sandstone cliff faces can have on a person.
