I was lucky enough to grow up around excited grandparents of Japanese friends telling stories about spirits and mythology. So fair warning: this is about art, tattoos, Japanese mythology in both, and one artist in particular. There's a gifted artist I've admired and followed online for quite a while: Horitomo (@horitomo_stateofgrace). He's the creator of MonMon cats and his style involves incorporating Japanese folklore, youkai, and kami with traditional art styles you find on ukiyo-e classics with his own variants. It's the absolute best. I had the unexpected and MegaFabu honor of getting a tattoo by Horitomo in October 2020. Despite being worried about Nutter pretty much all my friends convinced me they would help any upcoming medical bills he had, and that it was a perfect way to celebrate turning 40 that year. (I do feel a smidge bad about almost falling asleep, but Horitimo does such smooth work, it was easy to zone out and relax.) I want to share this now that we're so close to the emotional first anniversary for Nutter's diagnosis and treatment. I hope to encourage more people to appreciate and support @horitomo_stateofgrace in all his artistic endeavors. (Seriously, go look at his Benten print if you want to see the height of gorgeous. There's also Boss Cat, the adorable drunken nekomata prancing around with a towel on his head, tebori kitties earning their stripes, and so, SO many others.) @stateofgracetattoo should get all the love and support they deserve too. It's an amazing place with artists who create some truly epic work. You can find so many styles of art in the portfolios to put you in awe. Skin is a unique canvas and I think the ability to work with the lines and slopes in someone's body speaks volumes for an artist's talent. They were amazing even with my last tattoo over 20 years ago (predisabled). I never once felt awkward or out of place. And I really been thinking THINKING but these thoughts are surrounding those around me who have been holding me down either with intent or not it’s been in the most HIGH REGARD I’ve ever known. I’m not sure if I didn’t notice it before because I hadn’t been valuing my worth or if I just let it go over my head. What is High Regard? It can be defined as many things yet what is highlighted for me is these words RESPECT ✊🏾 and ADMIRATION, CREDIT and HONOUR, RECOGNITION and APPRECIATION, FAVOR, GLORY and APPROVAL. Sometimes we ourselves don’t see the portrait or what some may call “the bigger picture” yet as I reflect on my current strivings for future advancements on a personal level I am being supported without question. I thank GOD for those who Hold HIGH REGARD for me And if I had to compare it to the fake love I’ve received which I mistook for REALNESS I’d say it was all worth it. Because NOW I see that to be known by your works is far more valuable than any type of love. I see how it all plays a part in my Growth and Success mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually and financially. I say all that to say Watch out for those who use love to convince you that they are on your side because LOVE is just a 4-letter word that comes with a bunch of baggage whether it’s yours or the next persons.
