When I was in Capitol Reef National Park I decided to take advantage of the dark skies to make a Star Trail image. I was staying at Capitol Reef Resort and set my camera up just outside my room to make the images. It was unusually cold and I didn’t want to stand outside for the one hour sequence. The resort has teepees that guests can stay in and you can see them at the bottom of the image. There was also a fire pit to the bottom right and there were people moving around and the camera caught the movement. What are Star Trails? Star Trails show the motion of the sky as the earth spins on its axis. The small dot in the very center of this image is the star Polaris, or the North Star. The stars rotate around Polaris in the Northern Hemisphere. The photography details. Camera Nikon D-850, 14-24mm Nikkor F2.8 lens at F2.8 at 18mm, ISO 1600, 30 second exposure, 120 images. So roughly one hour [1 second between each exposure] of movement of the stars. I used a program called StarStaX to stack the 120 individual images into the final composite. It wasn’t completely dark when I started the sequence so the stars to the left are slightly blown out by the fading twilight to the west. Also there were some clouds that blew in during the one hour sequence from the left that also dimmed the stars on the left. There is a meteorite in the upper left that the camera caught in one exposure. UTAH PART III: The long awaited #Utah recap is finally here with Antarctica coming soon! I'll be splitting this up into three posts in order to share more photos and trip details, but you'll be able to read the full recap over on my Facebook and the Jet Set Jess blog. 📲 I traveled with @utahluxurytours, which despite the name, actually covers nearly all #nationalparks, offering private tours and scheduled departures. We did a condensed version of the #Mighty5 in Utah. Our tour started in Las Vegas and ended in Salt Lake City, but they also offer the reverse or a round trip to either location. Groups are usually kept to around 6-8 people, but they will accommodate a slightly larger group of family and friends, or if there are more requests. They do their best to match the groups based on skill levels, from groups with experienced climbers and hikers to families with children or elderly. Day 5 🌵 Explored @archesnps in the morning and @canyonlandsnps in the afternoon, including a hike to Delicate Arch. I should note that on a real experience with Utah Luxury Tours, you'll have full days at all these parks, but because we were on a FAM tour, we got a condensed itinerary. 🥾 UTAH ROCKS 🤘🏻 Ok. So I couldn’t help myself and just pick one of the Utah Red Rocks. But hey! It’s my collab and I do what I want! National parks have always held a special place in my heart. My mom spent her college summer and winter breaks working at Yellowstone, I was named after a best friend of hers from working there, my grandparents took the grandkids on a massive roadtrip out west when we each turned 10. I know I’m crazy fortunate to grow up in a family like this, that has allowed me to see some of the most beautiful places across the US. Once I finished my undergrad degree at UF, my brother and I decided to do a spontaneous road trip before we each started grad school. We threw our stuff in my car and hit the road. We ended up working our way from Sedona, AZ to Gardiner, MT. This trip introduced me to the Utah Red Rock parks and they absolutely stole a piece of my heart. Zion rose to the top of my list of all time favorite parks and inspired the dream to go back and hike The Narrows to the end (when I’m not less than a year post op on my ankle). I started this collab because of my undying love for the outdoors. It’s one of those things that helped drag me out of my depression. Canyonlands was the last of Utah’s “Mighty 5” we visited. We camped in the Needles District and hiked the Elephant Hill trail…the rock cairns we saw (and climbed!) along the way were amazing. Though only a few short hours away from Arches, and just on the other side of Moab, it really struck us how different the two parks are. That, and how remote and “crowd-less” Canyonlands was. 📍Next stop Canyonlands National Park: part 2 . . . 🔻Sunrise at Mesa Arch. Look at that glow! This is a very short hike and famous for its glow underneath as the sun rises. People get here ridiculously early to claim a spot to watch the sunrise. Recommend getting there at least 30 minutes, if not closer to an hour before sunrise. If you want an optimal spot for a tripod you will need to get there 1.5- 2 hours prior to sunrise. We heard of people getting there 4am or earlier. Overall, this is a small area. This is another scene looking east along the Notom-Bullfrog road on the east side of the Waterpoket Fold. There were a continuous line of similar buttes along the road. As you can see there is very little vegetation in the harsh desert landscape. So this image needs some explanation. On Tuesday night during my time in Capitol Reef National Park I decided to try to capture some star trails. There was no moon and although there were some clouds I decided it was worth the effort. I was staying at the Capitol Reef Resort and I set my camera up outside the door to my room. I set my Nikon D-850 with my Nikkor 14 - 24 mm lens to make 120 images at F2.8, ISO 1600, with each image 30 seconds long. As you can see the resort has teepees and also replica Conestoga Wagons that you can stay in if you are looking for something a little different. My long exposure captured the teepees with the light a little blown out. As I began processing these images I noticed that one image captured a meteorite flashing in the sky.
