TODAY'S SPIN - Elton John: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Elton John has been a household name since I was very young. My dad - who still refuses to admit he's a fan - always played this album as well as some of his other hits. His favorite that eventually become mine was the epic first track, "Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding". The epic synth and guitar intro that leads into the song always rattled me to the core as I felt it was this album's true outlier - the one that truly encapsulated Elton's talent as a musician. I found this album for a good deal at a convention years ago and grabbed it up quick to delve deeper beyond Funeral and the hits. I was not at all disappointed. This double-album is truly Elton's magnum opus, varying in style from epic synth-rock to radio-friendly ballads to songs that change by the minute. He definitely experimented with a lot of different styles on this album while still keeping his pop-rock image front and center. If you aren't quite a fan of Elton's main radio hits, pick up a copy of this album. It's iconic in every way and truly showcases Elton's talent and range.
