We forget how to be unapologetically ourselves. Hiding pieces of who we are so not to disturb others around us. Sometimes we can forget those pieces even exist until one day, they are screaming to be listened to. We get so good at hiding that we no longer even know who we are anymore. Words have a way of telling us the truth even when we don't want to listen. They remind us who we are, what we want, and what we are trying to hide. Writing brings us back to ourselves. Why do you think journaling is so beneficial? Unfiltered. Unaltered. Words are powerful and when we learn how to use them to heal and surrender, we begin to change and become who we are meant to be. Putting yourself out there is scary. Putting yourself out there means being vulnerable. Putting yourself out there is intimidating. Lelaynia is the Vegetation Specialist who taught me so much of what I know about planning for revegetation after industrial disturbance in northern Alberta. I had a coach in high school that I looked up to and that I despised. Talk about confusing. This man played a huge role in my life, both positive and negative. Telling me that I needed to lose 10 pounds. Constantly yelling and screaming at me and when asked why he did this, he said because I could take it. And I did. I tried to prove myself. Only to realize that proving myself was never really going to be good enough. There was always something else I could do better. I love this man for the things he taught me. I dropped off some books to the crew at ARKK Engineering in Sherwood Park today and got to catch up with Rob, the engineer from the book. Here’s another example of how @shannoncarlaking and I took an idea through to execution. First, I scribbled my ideas down on paper, including draft text and my version of drawing. Then, to get it in some kind of book format, I brought all the text into PowerPoint so that it could be reviewed by the review team. I used clip art and sketched whatever drawings I could in PowerPoint to get the idea for the page across. Once Shannon completed her pencil sketch drawings, I added them to PowerPoint so we could see the ideas really come together. I then moved into a publishing software called Affinity Publisher. Alongside that, I used Affinity Designer. I had to learn these two programs from scratch. Thankfully there are a lot of YouTube videos out there these days! Next, I figured out what fonts I wanted to use and set up the file based on what the printers needs were. I added the text and added the scanned watercolour paintings as Shannon completed them. I had a blast today with @shannoncarlaking at The Edison building downtown for @chinookblast. Shannon is the illustrator of my book and she has her paintings and interactive display set up during Chinook Blast. Her paintings are of real reclaimed sites, and each painting has a QR code that links you to more information about the site on the internet. She also has VR goggles which allow you to see some of the reclamation activities taking place in the bush in 3D! We met two couples from Seattle visiting Calgary and Canmore for some skiing. They were thoroughly interested in learning about reclamation and what we do in Canada. The one lady is even buying a copy of the book for her grandchildren in Alaska!
