May is #CalFresh Awareness Month which aims to increase public awareness of the program. CalFresh helps to improve the health and well-being of qualified households and individuals by providing improved access to healthy and nutritious food. “Many people receiving CalFresh benefits in Butte County are employed, but they often work in low-wage jobs. Individuals and families with low incomes struggling to make ends meet may qualify for benefits,” explained Lamisse Hirtel, Eligibility and Employment Program Manager at DESS. Rising food prices mean that trips to the grocery store are cutting deeper into family budgets. “Food expenses account for an increasing portion of a household’s monthly budget. CalFresh benefits are designed to supplement a household’s food budget, but they may not cover all food expenses for everyone, especially with current rising food prices,” explained Hirtel. CalFresh benefits provide added food security while leaving more room in the budget for utilities and other essentials such as housing and healthcare. CalFresh Awareness Month, which started in 2011, aims to dispel myths while helping eligible Californians apply for benefits.

A New EBT Summer Food Program for Kids! SUN Bucks is a new EBT food program that will give families $120 per eligible child to buy groceries during the summer. Children who get SUN Bucks can still receive other food programs like CalFresh and meals at Summer Meal Sites. Your child will automatically get SUN Bucks if your family got CalFresh, CalWORKS, or Medi-Cal during the 2023–24 school year, your child is experiencing homelessness, living in foster care, or is part of a migrant family.
