Happy Friday! Our research article got published today!!! 🥳🎉 Working memory (WM) is an important factor in children’s mathematical word problem-solving accuracy. WM can be thought of as the small amount of information that can be held in mind and used in the execution of cognitive tasks, in contrast with long-term memory, which is the vast amount of information saved in one’s life. In general, children with higher levels of WM proficiency tend to do well on mathematical word problem solving (WPS) measures. Despite knowing the importance of WM to math performance, little research has included emergent bilingual children (i.e., English learners) whose first language is Spanish. In this study, we find that both phonological short-term memory (STM) and the executive component of working memory (WM) play a unique and significant developmental role in emergent bilingual children’s mathematical word problem solving. The two components are not only structurally different, but they also contribute to distinct types of growth in mathematical problem solving. In addition, the verbal components of WM (phonological STM and executive WM) can contribute jointly (i.e., interact) in predictions of mathematical probiem-solving growth within the second language system. We also found there are significant benefits of first language- L1 processing (Spanish in this case) in WM that contribute to the rate of growth in the second language-L2 (English) WM and L2 mathematical WPS. It's a time to recognize all the important life changing work of SLPs, SLP Assistants, Audiologists, Audiology Assistants! 〰️ Did you know, according the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) website: in 2022 there were 14,029 practicing audiologists—up from 13,910 at year-end 2021 (a 0.9% increase), and 199,942 SLPs—up from 193,799 at year-end 2021 (a 3.2% increase). Simply put, the field is constantly growing, and has grown so much since 2022! 〰️Balance and Dizziness Experts: Many people don't realize that audiologists also specialize in balance disorders and dizziness! They assess and treat conditions like vertigo, Meniere's disease, and vestibular migraines. 〰️Swallowing superheros: Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, is a special area of expertise for SLPs! They evaluate swallowing function and provide therapy to improve safety and efficiency during eating and drinking. AMAZING and life changing 🫶

My dear friend, colleague and mentor, Kathryn Wage, is retiring and is closing her therapy practice (Aspire, previously known as California Learning Connection). Kathryn has been a leader in our field and in our community, and spent 30 years creating a private practice atmosphere that puts clients and their needs first. Kathryn has also been a dedicated, caring, and fair leader — her staff love her so. I’m thrilled to share that Empower has hired on 7 Speech Therapy clinicians from Aspire, all of whom share in our mission & values of providing effective, respectful, holistic, client/family-centered, strengths-based & HIGH QUALITY care. Kathryn and I will be working on a consultative basis to create and find new opportunities for families to access much needed services. Did you know that research shows... ☀️ Bilinguals identify cognates with higher accuracy and faster speed than noncognate words(Squires et al, 2020) ☀️ Bilingual students show cross-linguistic transfer and feasibility. (Kambanaros et al 2017) ☀️ Using cognates leads to greater gains in vocabulary naming (Dam et al 2020) SLPs can use this knowledge when selecting articulation therapy targets with bilingual students on their caseload. Finding Spanish-English cognates with target sound in the same word position could lead to quicker articulation gains in therapy. Student alumni, Isabella Snyder and Michaela Armanini, from PennWest Clarion University traveled to Bulgaria with Therapy Abroad in 2023. They implemented low-tech AAC for an individual with cerebral palsy to increase his autonomy and quality of life. They hoped to spread awareness about their experience and research beyond the speech-language pathology community, and were successful in doing so. In the future they hope to trial different and more complex AAC systems with similar patients. Hace un tiempo les comenté que había pedido un dispositivo de CAA/ACC para uno/una de mis pacientes de la marca @tobii_dynavox . Cuando me fui a mi maternity leave el dispositivo llego a la familia y ya después de casi 5 meses no se imaginan los avances que ha tenido esta/este pequeño/a!!! Ya está haciendo frases entre 4-5 palabras (verbalmente y/o usando el dispositivo), pide, protesta y además la madre me ha comentado que su hijo/a ha aumentado considerablemente su vocabulario en español gracias a que el dispositivo es bilingüe!!! hi everyone!! 🩷 I wanted to jump on here to share some behind of the scenes from the past few weeks! i know that a lot of you are either in graduate school or will be starting graduate school and here is your reminder that you are a HUMAN. you are a graduate student but you are also a friend, co-coworker, child, a sibling, a partner, someone’s inspiration. Being a graduate student means spending a lot of time on your studies, studying, putting in your sweat and tears into hundreds hours that you aren’t compensated for. Being in graduate school is a huge commitment but it’s also important not to stop living your life because these are the moments that will not come back to us. when I started graduate school i told myself that graduate school will not be the reason that I stop enjoying life. Managing working 21-35 hour work weeks, while completing 400+ hours of direct therapy, juggling 9-17 credit semesters, traveling, and spending time with family and loved ones was challenging at first but I didn’t give up and pushed through. I am an slp graduate student, educator, student clinician, sister, daughter, girlfriend, best friend, peer, colleague etc 🧠🫧🧸🚂🫶🏼 One thing that graduate school taught me is that this is the perfect time to make mistakes and take every “mistake” as a learning opportunity. This is our time to apply what we learn in our courses into the real world into our externships.
