Prince Rogers Nelson was born June 7, 1958 and tragically passed April 21, 2016. @prince was an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, dancer and actor. #Prince was the recipient of numerous awards and nominations, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest musicians who’s ever lived. Prince’s was known for his flamboyant, androgynous persona, wide vocal range, and skill as a multi-instrumentalist. Prince’s music incorporated a wide variety of styles, including funk, R&B, rock, new wave, soul, synth-pop, pop, jazz, blues, and hip hop. Prince produced his albums himself, pioneering the Minneapolis sound. Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide during his lifetime, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. Some of Prince’s most prestigious awards included the Grammy President’s Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. Prince was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022. The number of songs written by Prince range well over 1,000; some of which were made popular after being covered by other musicians, most notably “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinéad O’Connor and “Manic Monday” by the Bangles. James Mercer Langston Hughes was born February 1, 1901 and died May 22, 1967. Better known as #LangstonHughes, Hughes was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist from #Joplin, #Missouri. Hughes was of the earliest innovators of jazz poetry, and is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. Langston famously wrote about the period “when Harlem was in vogue.” Growing-up in the Midwestern, Hughes was always working toward being a prolific writer, and gained attention at a young age. Hughes moved to New York City as a young man, where he made his career studying at Columbia University in New York City. Although Langston dropped-out, he gained notice from New York publishers, first in The Crisis magazine. Then Hughes gained notice from book publishers, and became known in the creative community in Harlem. In addition to poetry, Hughes wrote plays and short stories. He also published several nonfiction works. From 1942 to 1962, as the civil rights movement gained traction, Langston wrote an in-depth weekly column in a leading black newspaper, #TheChicagoDefender. Hughes was under constant scrutiny throughout his professional life due to his political views, and a routine target of the Government ala McCarthy’s #RedScare. Hughes also spoke out against African-American involvement in the US Armed Forces, and various military conflicts (largely) due to #JimCrowLaws being predominantly in vogue in the U.S. South. Philip Parris Lynott was born on August 20, 1949 and passed on January 4, 1986. #PhilLynott was an Irish musician, songwriter, and poet. He was most notably know asthe co-founder, lead vocalist, bassist, and primary songwriter for the hard rock band @thinlizzy. Phil was known for his distinctive pick-based style on the bass and for his imaginative lyrical contributions, including working class tales and numerous characters drawn from personal influences and #Celtic culture. #Lynott was born in the West Midlands of England but grew up in Dublin with his grandparents. He remained close to his mother, Philomena, throughout his life. He fronted several bands as a lead vocalist, including #skidrow alongside Gary Moore, before learning the bass guitar and forming #ThinLizzy in 1969. After initial success with “ #WhiskeyintheJar”, the band had several hits in the mid-1970s, such as “ #TheBoysAreBackinTown”, “ #Jailbreak” and “ #WaitingforanAlibi”, and became a popular live attraction combining Lynott’s vocal and songwriting skills with dual lead guitars. Towards the end of the 1970s, Lynott embarked upon a solo career and published two books of poetry. After Thin Lizzy disbanded, he assembled and fronted the band #GrandSlam. In the 1980s, Lynott increasingly suffered prattles with substance abuse, particularly an addiction to heroin. In 1985, he had a final chart success with #Moore, “ #OutintheFields”, before his death in 1986. Phil Lynott remains a popular figure in the rock world, and in 2005, a statue in his memory was erected in Dublin, #Ireland. #JamesNathanielBrown born on February 17, 1936, and died on May 18, 2023. #JimBrown was an American football fullback, civil rights activist, and actor. Brown played for the @clevelandbrowns of the @nfl from 1957 through 1965. Mr. Brown is considered one of the greatest #runningbacks of all time, as well as one of the greatest players in NFL history, Brown was a #ProBowl invitee every season he was in the league, was recognized as the AP NFL #MVP three times, and won an NFL championship with the #Browns in 1964. #Brown led the league in rushing yards in eight out of his nine seasons, and by the time he retired, he held most major rushing records. In 2002, he was named by #TheSportingNews as the greatest professional football player ever. Shortly before the end of his football career, Brown became an actor. He retired at the peak of his football career to pursue an acting career. He obtained 53 acting credits and several leading roles throughout the 1970s. Brown has routinely been identified as #Hollywood’s first black action hero and his role in the 1969 film #100Rifles made cinematic history for featuring interracial love scenes. jimbrown was one of the few athletes, and among the most prominent #AfricanAmericans, to speak out on racial issues as the #civilrights movement was growing in the 1950s. He participated in the #ClevelandSummit after #MuhammadAli faced imprisonment for refusing to enter the draft for the #VietnamWar, and he founded the #BlackEconomicUnion to help promote economic opportunities for minority-owned businesses. Brown later launched a foundation focused on diverting at-risk youth from violence through teaching them life skills, through which he facilitated the #WattsTruce between rival street gangs in Los Angeles. Fredrick “Chairman Fred” Allen Hampton Sr. Was born August 30, 1948 and was brutally slain in his sleep in December 4, 1969 by Chicago police. #ChairmenFred was an American activist. Hampton came to prominence in his late teens and very early 20s in Chicago as deputy chairman of the national Black Panther Party and chair of the Illinois chapter. As a progressive #AfricanAmerican, he founded the anti-racist, anti-classist Rainbow Coalition, a prominent multicultural political organization that initially included the #BlackPanthers, #YoungPatriots (organized poor whites), and the #YoungLords (organized Hispanics), and an alliance among major Chicago street gangs to help them abolish in-fighting and work together for social change. #fredhampton quickly became known as a unifier, uniting people of opposing ideologies, across multiple classes, ethnicities and religious groups. A Marxist–Leninist idealist, Hampton considered fascism the greatest threat, saying, “nothing is more important than stopping fascism, because fascism will stop us all.” Hampton often spoke out against the police’s unfair targeting of minorities and the poor, and was critical of their movements toward racism rather than serving the community. In 1967, the FBI marked Hampton as a radical threat. The FBI routinely tried undermining Fred’s activities in Chicago, sowing disinformation among black progressive groups and placing a counterintelligence operative in the local Panthers organization. In December 1969, Hampton was drugged, shot and killed in his bed during a predawn raid at his Chicago apartment by a tactical unit, who received aid from the Chicago PD and the FBI leading to the attack. Officers sprayed more than 100 gunshots throughout the apartment; the occupants fired once in self-defense. In January 1970, the Cook County Coroner held an inquest; the coroner’s jury concluded that Hampton’s and Clark’s deaths were justifiable homicides. Quincy Delight Jones Jr. Born on March 14, 1933. Better known to the masses as “Quincy Jones” - is a record producer, songwriter, composer, arranger, and film and television producer. @quincyjones’ career spans over 70 years, with 28 Grammy Awards won, 80 nominations, and a Grammy Legend Award recipient in 1992. #QuincyJones has arranged/composed/performed iconic TV themes and movie scores over the years (Sanford and Son, Roots, The Color Purple, The Italian Job, etc.) and produced some of the most legendary music artists/acts (Michael Jackson, Tony Bennet, George Benson, Ray Charles, Dizzy Gillespie, Aretha Franklin, Little Richard, Frank Sinatra, Donna Summer, etc.). Although Quincy is well known in music history, his talent and impact is often overlooked because he was “behind the scenes” for so many successful artists. #Jones’ passion for #socialactivism began aside his Music career. In the 1960s with his support of Martin Luther King Jr. #Quincy is one of the founders of the Institute for Black American Music (IBAM), whose events aim to raise enough funds for the creation of a national library of African-American art and #music. Jones is also one of the founders of the Black Arts Festival in his hometown of Chicago. Jones has also worked closely with Bono of @u2 on a number of philanthropic causes. Quincy is the founder of the Quincy Jones Listen Up Foundation, a nonprofit organization that built more than 100 homes in South Africa and which aims to connect youths with technology, education, culture, and music.
