Houston Harris, born July 10, 1924, was an American professional wrestler who was better known by his ring name, #BoboBrazil. #Bobo is credited with breaking down barriers of racial segregation in # #professionalwrestling, Harris is considered one of the first successful African-American professional wrestlers. Bobo was one of the more physically imposing wrestlers of his generation as well. Brazil towered at 6′ 6″ in height and weighed 270 lbs. During the time, segregation in the South normally limited African-American wrestlers to only wrestling other African-American wrestlers; Harris proved so popular that promoters put aside their prejudices in order to make money. Brazil developed a fanbase among both the black and white populace with his modesty, stylish dress and professionalism, making him a big draw and an appealing babyface to both races of fans. Although loved by fans, it didn’t stop Brazil from dealing with bigotry and discrimination during his time. In the era when Harris ascended to stardom, African American fans were forced to sit in areas that made it hard to see Bobo matches; even Harris himself was banned from going to restaurants, hotels, and even wrestling in some territories due to the color of his skin. Despite this, Bobo went onto have a successful career amassing multiple championships and accolades. Bobo Passed on January 20, 1998 in St. Joseph, MI after a series of strokes. Born November 9, 1935, Pack Robert Gibson was an American right-handed pitcher in @mlb who played his entire career for the @cardinals from 1959 to 1975. Nicknamed “Gibby” and “Hoot”, Bob Gibson was known for his fiercely competitive nature. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Gibson overcame childhood illness to excel in youth sports, particularly basketball and baseball. After briefly playing under contract to both the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team and the St. Louis Cardinals organization, Gibson decided to continue playing only baseball professionally. He became a full-time starting pitcher in July 1961 and earned his first All-Star appearance in 1962. Gibson won 2 of 3 games he pitched in the 1964 World Series, then won 20 games in a season for the first time in 1965. Gibson also pitched three complete game victories in the 1967 World Series. The pinnacle of Gibson’s career was 1968, when he posted a 1.12 ERA for the season and then recorded 17 strikeouts in Game 1 of the 1968 World Series. Gibson threw a no-hitter in 1971 but began experiencing swelling in his knee in subsequent seasons. At the time of his retirement in 1975, Gibson ranked second only to Walter Johnson among major-league pitchers in career strikeouts. Gibson tallied 251 wins, 3,117 strikeouts, and a 2.91 earned run average. A nine-time All-Star and two-time World Series Champion, he won two Cy Young Awards and the 1968 #NL #MVPs. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981, his first year of eligibility, and the Cardinals retired his uniform number 45 in September 1975, the year he retired. Gibson was later selected for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team in 1999. He died of pancreatic cancer on October 2, 2020. Prince Rogers Nelson was born June 7, 1958 and tragically passed April 21, 2016. @prince was an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, dancer and actor. #Prince was the recipient of numerous awards and nominations, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest musicians who’s ever lived. Prince’s was known for his flamboyant, androgynous persona, wide vocal range, and skill as a multi-instrumentalist. Prince’s music incorporated a wide variety of styles, including funk, R&B, rock, new wave, soul, synth-pop, pop, jazz, blues, and hip hop. Prince produced his albums himself, pioneering the Minneapolis sound. Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide during his lifetime, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. Some of Prince’s most prestigious awards included the Grammy President’s Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. Prince was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022. The number of songs written by Prince range well over 1,000; some of which were made popular after being covered by other musicians, most notably “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinéad O’Connor and “Manic Monday” by the Bangles. James Mercer Langston Hughes was born February 1, 1901 and died May 22, 1967. Better known as #LangstonHughes, Hughes was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist from #Joplin, #Missouri. Hughes was of the earliest innovators of jazz poetry, and is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. Langston famously wrote about the period “when Harlem was in vogue.” Growing-up in the Midwestern, Hughes was always working toward being a prolific writer, and gained attention at a young age. Hughes moved to New York City as a young man, where he made his career studying at Columbia University in New York City. Although Langston dropped-out, he gained notice from New York publishers, first in The Crisis magazine. Then Hughes gained notice from book publishers, and became known in the creative community in Harlem. In addition to poetry, Hughes wrote plays and short stories. He also published several nonfiction works. From 1942 to 1962, as the civil rights movement gained traction, Langston wrote an in-depth weekly column in a leading black newspaper, #TheChicagoDefender. Hughes was under constant scrutiny throughout his professional life due to his political views, and a routine target of the Government ala McCarthy’s #RedScare. Hughes also spoke out against African-American involvement in the US Armed Forces, and various military conflicts (largely) due to #JimCrowLaws being predominantly in vogue in the U.S. South. Philip Parris Lynott was born on August 20, 1949 and passed on January 4, 1986. #PhilLynott was an Irish musician, songwriter, and poet. He was most notably know asthe co-founder, lead vocalist, bassist, and primary songwriter for the hard rock band @thinlizzy. Phil was known for his distinctive pick-based style on the bass and for his imaginative lyrical contributions, including working class tales and numerous characters drawn from personal influences and #Celtic culture. #Lynott was born in the West Midlands of England but grew up in Dublin with his grandparents. He remained close to his mother, Philomena, throughout his life. He fronted several bands as a lead vocalist, including #skidrow alongside Gary Moore, before learning the bass guitar and forming #ThinLizzy in 1969. After initial success with “ #WhiskeyintheJar”, the band had several hits in the mid-1970s, such as “ #TheBoysAreBackinTown”, “ #Jailbreak” and “ #WaitingforanAlibi”, and became a popular live attraction combining Lynott’s vocal and songwriting skills with dual lead guitars. Towards the end of the 1970s, Lynott embarked upon a solo career and published two books of poetry. After Thin Lizzy disbanded, he assembled and fronted the band #GrandSlam. In the 1980s, Lynott increasingly suffered prattles with substance abuse, particularly an addiction to heroin. Michael Santiago Render was born April 20, 1975). Michael is better known by his stage name Killer Mike and is an African-American rapper and activist. He made his recording debut on @outkast’s fourth album #Stankonia (2000), and later appeared on their Grammy Award-winning single “ #TheWholeWorld” from their greatest hits album @bigboi and @andre3000 Present... Outkast (2001). Mike released his debut studio album #Monster (2003), which received critical acclaim and peaked at number ten on the Billboard 200. He followed up with the independent albums #IPledgeAllegianceToTheGrind (2006) and #IPledgeAllegiancetotheGrindII (2008). Later, he released #Pledge (2011) when jumping to @tip, and later #WilliamsStreetRecords to release his fifth album, #RAPMusic (2012).
