@cultofluna and @julie_christmas_official “Mariner” (Green Splatter, edition of 730) - @indierecordings One of my favorite things in music is a male/female duet (think The Rolling Stones “Gimme Shelter” Instant chills EVERY time.) This is ESPECIALLY true if you make it heavy (think He is Legend “(((louds”). But a whole album?! And with an incredibly powerful/eccentric female vocalist in her own right?! I’m so sold I’ll buy the record before I even know who or what it is. And of all of the examples of this, this album is my favorite. Let that sink in. I’m literally saying this album is more my favorite than Neurosis & Jarboe, guys. Unreal. How do you top that?! Well, these two did. This album is an absolute master class in just about everything I love about music. This is not at all a short album, and every single second of it is perfect. Everything perfectly timed and placed to make this an essential experience in every way. I so desperately hope that they do another one of these someday, and I even more desperately hope I can catch a show of this someday. But until then, I’m just going to have this album on repeat until I die. And please play this all at my funeral, too. And then at my grave forever and ever, amen.

One of my favourite albums this side of Y2K just got a re-issue. Mariner by @cultofluna and @julie_christmas_official is deservedly lauded as one of the crowning achievements in post-metal. ‘The Wreck of S.S. Needle’ is a haunting earworm at the centre of the record that stands among CoL’s best, and ‘Cygnus’ (see vid) rounds out the main track list with its quiet passages morphing into scabrous walls of sound.⠀ ⠀ This vinyl re-issue also has exclusive bonus track ‘Beyond the Redshift’, which happens to be the title of their curated festival in London last year that I unfortunately had to miss out on. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to hear Mariner live at some point if the artists reconvene for another performance. Got reminded of this show just now from a friends Facebook post. I always tried new stuff while doing shows. Living in brooklyn never stopped giving me opportunities to have new music and new artists try out different showcases. This was one. First off the HUF ( @k_hufnagel ) master death metal guitarist and friend! He started off the night white his eclectic solo project It was serene diverse but het powerful. Then came out my long time friend @stephenbrodsky who wooed the crowd with his lovely and charismatic voice. A few songs in he brought out another friend @benjaminkoller to jump on some new tunes they were working on. These songs were early @mutoidman songs they powered the crowd with. After that the wonderful and beautiful @julie_christmas_official came out with her full band. Intimidating yet commanding she tore through her songs with her full band in tow and decimated the crowd. Trophy -Made Out of Babies (2005) This is the debut LP from noise/post-metal outfit Made Out of Babies. Cool name! This is a scary and fun experience. Like a rollercoaster that you kind of want to get off of, but you can’t, but you’re glad you’re on it. Lots of fuzzy guitars, steady drums, and deep, growling bass lines keep this album exciting from beginning to But you know what also really keeps this album really exciting? Julie Christmas. Her voice is tiny, but mighty. High pitched and almost childlike sometimes, but highly intense and scary at the same time. Some of her performances are cathartic and gutsy like on Gut Shoveler, and other times they’re creepy and theatrical like on Sugar. Speaking of which, Sugar is a really unsettling song. Really gives me the creeps. Sounds like a murderous little kid that appears in your nightmares. Very creepy and gross. I don’t know what exactly this song is about but whatever it’s about, I don’t want to be anywhere near it. I know she says she’ll “see me home safely” but I think I’d rather get mugged. Just listen to it. Well done. Send this album to the post-metal friends in your life. An old friend recently said “I’m proud of you because I remember when you worked shitty jobs and now you’re doing what you love professionally and playing all over the world with your favorite bands.” 10 years ago, I walked into @revolvermag and I didn’t even know it. I responded to a job posting on a website to work at a music entertainment company and the listing said Newbay Media. I showed up in a suit and my future colleagues weren’t impressed by my outfit and I was very embarrassed 😂 Ironically, the corporate folks there were impressed enough to hire me eventually to handle marketing. A few weeks later, I found myself on a plane to LA for the Golden Gods Awards. I stayed at the Sunset Marquis hotel in Hollywood. My favorite childhood band, Guns N Roses were headlining and I bumped into Billy Idol, Alice Cooper and Hall & Oates. The icing on the cake was sharing a flight with Joan Jett. It was a dream come true. Since I was 8, I knew I wanted to work in hard rock/heavy metal. I listened to GNR, Metallica, and Faith No More, watched tons of MTV, especially Headbanger’s ball. I read magazines like RIP, Circus, Hit Parader and Metal Edge and eventually I got into Nirvana & Sonic Youth, who I read about in Alternative Press. Ten years later, I still work for Revolver and we are affiliated w/ @altpress @metaledgemagazine @goldminemagazine as well as @brooklynvegan which I read religiously for decades. Early in my journey, I played in bands, went to school to be a music journalist and got some freelance work at CMJ & Death + Taxes. I kept playing in bands, touring everywhere, losing money, sometimes playing to bar tenders, the opening bands or no one. I worked in hospitality, retail and several odd jobs and many people discouraged me from pursuing my dreams, saying that rock is becoming irrelevant or that playing in bands wouldn’t amount to anything. They were wrong. This month marks a decade at my dayjob and simultaneously am in several bands, some of which are playing massive shows with bands I grew up on like Metallica, Foo Fighters, Mr Bungle, Queens of the Stone Age & more. Thanks to those who encouraged me. Feeling really grateful 🙏🖤

Live Review : Damnation Festival on November 4th 2023 (Part I) We all love to moan. We are British. Finding fault in everything is our national sport. However the truth is, no matter how hard you look, there is very little, if anything, to criticise about this year’s Damnation Festival (The puddle at the end of the drive may well have been a pain but it was clearly outside of Gav and Paul’s jurisdiction). The snag list from last year's inaugural edition at the BEC arena has been conclusively dealt with. There is not a food queue to be seen, chairs are plentiful, and I am still supping the specially commissioned stout well into Saturday night.
