I'm pretty sure I first heard of Young Widows from their split with Helms Alee, but didn't really dive into them until I heard that otherworldly solo on God Man 🥴🥴. The only way I could think to describe it to friends was like a backwards exorcist crab walk up the stairs, but on guitar 😅😅 While I absolutely love this album and Easy Pain, the majority of my scrobbles this year are from Settle Down City I'd imagine (which is probably my most spun album by them as well). I can't even describe what it is that's so captivating about Young Widows. Their guitar tones and riffs just seem to grip me and fill me with a feeling I don't even understand. I also really like how they decided to make their later albums (or maybe just Old Wounds and Decayed) live-ish albums. Really gives them a completely unique feel. Definitely wish I would have gotten into them while they were still active, but here's hoping for some sort of reunion in the future! And a bonus picture of Salem! YOUNG WIDOWS - Old Wounds (Temporary Residence, 2008). Noise rock is a genre that's pretty far along from its AmRep / Touch and Go roots. I'm not really up on what it has morphed into over the past ten years? Elements that I wouldn't really recognise these days... the first wave of bands had a strong personality and that kinda faded but Young Widows 'Old Wounds' has a very strong identity. The presentation has a very live feeling constructed from live pieces and tracks. In fact they were playing most of this album live before it was released I think? Evan Patterson is more famous for the Jay Jayle project now, recording his last album on a phone.
