Summary of May the 11th's IpplePlanet Birdsong and Blubells walk: Two weeks ago we led a walk from Ipplepen village to and around Orley Common and back. Afraid this was the only photo taken during the walk, any ideas on the species? Possible hawksbeard species? We had 10x keen walkers and were blessed with sunny weather. We counted over 14x bird species. Sparrow; house martin; wood pigeon; starling; blackcap (sweet phrases, rich flourish, goes up at end of phrases like asking a question); greenfinch (twittering song and wheeze); wren (continuous blasting song with lots of trills); robin (musical song, with phrases and pauses); blackbird (musical song with phrases and pauses, chuckle at end of phrases, deeper and more mellow than robin); chiffchaff; jay; great tit (squeaky bike "teacher teacher"); coal tit (faster version of great tit song 'pee-choo pee-choo'); buzzard flying over; 3x Notable insects: Orange tip and speckled wood butterflies. Bloody-nosed beetle walking across path. Discussed that dormice have been recorded at Orley. Recommend examining hazel nut shells, a bevelled edge is a sign of dormice presence. Do not check boxes as you could disturb nesting birds or dormice or hornets! About last night! 🦇 Finally went to a @devonwildlifetrust bat walk in Exeter's Victorian catacombs! What an atmosphere on a warm May evening, with the Devon dimpsy light lowering, among so many other curious and knowledgeable bat fans! I'd never seen a bat detector or been up close to the catacombs, and it was like time stood still as we all had our senses on alert to hear and spot the caped crusaders. What made it extra cool was being up high, in the middle of a city (with green hills on the horizon 😍) as the urban sounds slowly melted away and we descended to the stone tombs...standing together in a shared experience. ✨ Some things I discovered: 🦇 One bat will leave the roost first at dusk and report back to the others that it's safe to be on the wing. 🦇 Different types of bats eat different types of food, so they peacefully co-exist. We heard and saw pippistrelles and noctules, and heard and glimpsed the flutey bird-like call of FIVE Greater horseshoes! (Swipe to the end clips.) Our guide was quite surprised by this, given our urban environment. Pippistrelles eat mosquitoes, which shows that mozzies are an important part of the food chain, if a pest to us. 🦇 Bats won't land in your hair, in case you were wondering! 🦇 Street lights can adversely affect bat behaviour so if you're aware of a roost, let the council know so they can get the lights adjusted. As we walked we learnt lots of facts from Simon about all the birds we were listening to and spotting - there is so much wonderful bird song around at this time of year. Over the fields the Skylarks were singing in the air - these ground nesting birds are tricky to spot as they fly high over the fields but their song is beautiful to listen to. A Kestrel glided close to us giving us time to enjoy it then sat on the church, reappearing later for us to enjoy again. A Bluetit was spotted coming out of a hole in a tree and we had the chance to watch it flitting in and out. We saw and heard many birds Goldfinches, Chiff Chaffs, Greenfinches, Jays, a Kite, Stonechats, Nuthatches, Blackcaps, a Linnet, Pheasants and more. When your taking pictures of the beautiful scenery and you catch your other half giving you the side eye 👀😏 Well I did it 💪🏻 today I walked 1.3miles with the Mrs, I've given up smoking AND I had my 1st grief therapy session! Today Kim wanted to photo myself to show me I still look "great" since having crutches etc I have only ever done selfies, I very rarely ever have a full length picture... who wants to see my dodgy wonky ankles, my knocked knees and fancy ancy ankle supports 🤣 well in future even if you don't want to see my imperfections that's exactly all your going to get from me 😏 I have been threw alot of trauma throughout my life which has caused me to change my outlook on life, its made me develop OCD with certain things, it's caused me to have an eating disorder, it's caused me to loose me.... well today I'm taking my life back. No longer will I be controlled, abused, beaten and scared to live... today I smile at the world and told my issues to do one. I've given up drinking for 2 years which has been incredibly hard to do... in turn I upped my smoking intake and this has a huge knock on effect with my chest/lungs... so today I've gone to the vape until I can give up all together... Raising awareness in my own way, my own journey, my own life.
