She'll discuss how IWS systems perform, connect hydraulic behaviors to community risks, and develop tools for water utilities. Dr. Weston will also present preliminary results from her fieldwork on the impact of IWS schedules on public health and wellbeing, funded by the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Health. Dr. Weston graduated with an Integrated Masters in Civil and Structural Engineering from the University of Sheffield and a PhD in Water Engineering. She has held research roles at the University of Sheffield, Laval Université, and the University of Bristol. It's field trip time! On April 23rd, our Hydrology Honours class embarked on an incredible journey to the Cathedral Peak research catchments, immersing themselves in the wonders of hydrological processes. The uKhahlamba Drakensberg serves as a vital water source for KZN and Gauteng, making this adventure all the more impactful. Our students dived into topics ranging from water quality to groundwater interactions with the guidance of CWRR members, Mr Mark Horan, Prof Seifu Kebede, Dr Daniel Kibirige, and Dr Michele Toucher from SAEON. They conducted hydrological measurements, sampled the uThukela River's waters, and explored catchments within the Cathedral Peak area. Water Pressure | Bodily Waters Our exhibition, Water Pressure, @mkghamburg until 13.10.2024 explores new perspectives on the challenges of water through five themes. The second theme, Bodily Waters curated with @erika__pinner, explores water as an essential liquid for all life on Earth. The exhibits incorporate science and technology to critically and poetically remark on the relationship all living beings have with water, and to reveal how human behaviour affects other species. Water is a human right, and yet, around two billion people in the world do not have access to clean drinking water, and around 1.5 billion lack basic, safe sanitation services. Bodily Waters highlights these persistent inequalities and presents projects that offer alternative methods as replacements for inadequate and outdated water-management systems. Water Pressure | Water Stories Our exhibition, Water Pressure, explores new perspectives on the challenges of water and the urgent need to shape a more imaginative and resilient water culture. The opening theme, Water Stories, shares diverse water stories and aims to reawaken a connection to water and an understanding of its place in culture and the ecosystem. Historically, water was protected as a precious, life-giving liquid with spiritual, and psychological dimensions. With the industrialisation, colonisation, and commodification of water, Western culture has drained water of meaning and severed our understanding of the connection between water and the environment. Drawing on the collections of @mkghamburg and other Hamburg institutions, Water Stories is an eclectic collage of ideas and objects from different eras and cultures. The intention is to open minds to multiple perspectives, hydrate new water imaginaries, and better equip us to solve extreme environmental change. An Iowa State research team, led by associate professor of Chemistry Robbyn Anand and research scientist in Chemistry Beatrise Berzina, has been awarded a $649,989 Phase 1 grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation to develop a portable water purification system for communities where basic water infrastructure and water quality monitoring are limited. The team at Iowa State is proposing a water purification system that uses electrokinetic technology to divert contaminants - such as salts, metals, microplastics, viruses, and bacteria - from flowing water into a separated waste stream, purifying drinking water. The next nine months will be spent developing a pre-prototype system that can operate in areas affected by water insecurity. Спостереження за використанням канабісу на основі стічних вод У дослідженні, опублікованому в журналі Water Research, обговорено прогрес у нагляді за використанням канабісу на основі стічних вод. WBE відстежує зміни та просторові відмінності у вживанні заборонених речовин, доповнюючи встановлені показники. Це важливе джерело інформації про споживання заборонених речовин на рівні громади. Існували невизначеності щодо оцінок, отриманих WBE стосовно вживання канабісу порівняно з іншими забороненими речовинами. У цьому дослідженні обговорювався прогрес у WBS щодо вживання канабісу й існуючі проблеми. Аналітичні бар'єри Аналітичні методи WBS включають визначення різноманітних біомаркерів, де 11-нор-9-карбокси-Δ9-тетрагідроканабінол (THC-COOH), основний сечовий метаболіт основної психоактивної сполуки канабісу, тетрагідроканабінолу (THC), є лише одним із аналітів для вимірювання. Один аналіз кількох аналітів заощаджує час, економічніший та ефективніший, хоча потрібен компроміс експериментальних умов. Крім того, аналіз THC-COOH вимагає регулювання pH. При кислому рН гідрофобна молекулярна форма THC-COOH сприяє адсорбції на поверхні матеріалів для відбору/обробки або твердих частинок. Запропонували найкращий аналітичний протокол, щоб уникнути підкислення. Ліпофільні властивості канабіноїдів перешкоджають аналітичному визначенню. Таким чином, ввели більш конкретні методи для виявлення ТГК та його метаболітів у твердих речовинах, що потрапляють у стічні води. Проблеми через каналізацію та динаміку зразків Кількісне визначення ТГК та метаболітів у завислих речовинах і водній фазі вхідних стічних вод показало їх поділ на дві фази вхідних стічних вод. Крім того, існує припущення, що фекалії тих, хто не користується, і користувачів можуть впливати на загальне навантаження у водній фазі. Ці висновки відкрили додаткові запити, виявивши прогалини у знаннях, що вимагають подальшого аналізу...
