An Iowa State research team, led by associate professor of Chemistry Robbyn Anand and research scientist in Chemistry Beatrise Berzina, has been awarded a $649,989 Phase 1 grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation to develop a portable water purification system for communities where basic water infrastructure and water quality monitoring are limited. The team at Iowa State is proposing a water purification system that uses electrokinetic technology to divert contaminants - such as salts, metals, microplastics, viruses, and bacteria - from flowing water into a separated waste stream, purifying drinking water. The next nine months will be spent developing a pre-prototype system that can operate in areas affected by water insecurity. Professor of Chemistry Young-Jin Lee and Professor of Genetics, Development, and Cell Biology Jeffrey Essner are the second team to receive a $50,000 Presidential Interdisciplinary Research Seed Grant this year. Associate professor of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventative Medicine Jodi McGill and professor of Feedlot Nutrition Stephanie Hansen have been awarded a $50,000 2024 Presidential Interdisciplinary Research Seed Grant (PIRS) from the Office of the Vice President for Research. Scientists have been making nanoparticles out of DNA strands for two decades. But in that time, the focus has been mostly on the architecture of DNA, mainly, turning genetic codes into the components needed for creating tiny robots. Professor of Genetics, Development, and Cell Biology Eric Henderson and recent doctoral graduate Chang-Yong Oh hope to change this focus by showing that nanoscale materials made of DNA can convey their built-in genetic instructions. In a recent paper published in Scientific Reports, Henderson and Oh described how they constructed DNA nanoparticles capable of expressing genetic code. Having gene-bearing capacity increases the potential of future DNA nanotechnology, allowing these structures to be both carriers and medicine. The duo say they are among the first research teams in the world to create a DNA particle that expresses its genetic code. Iowa State University recently received the top Innovation and Economic Prosperity University Award at the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU) conference. The award recognizes overall excellence across three categories: talent, place, and innovation. The APLU award highlighted three examples of Iowa State's innovation and entrepreneurial resources: the integrated research and demonstration facility at the @iowastatebcrf, the Venture Mentoring Service offered through the Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship, and the @ivyiowastate Sales Forum, which provides a space where university students can practice making sales pitches. "Winning the top award from APLU affirms Iowa State University is a national leader in research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. My greatest accomplishment at Iowa State is creating Ames Ride, a mobile app that students and members of the Ames community can use to track their CyRide. Associate Professor of mechanical engineering Nicole Hashemi and her students have been working for years on a thin, rectangular polymer block to model maternal and fetal blood flow, aptly referred to as "placenta on a chip." By pumping fluids through the model, researchers can test how substances such as medicines and nutrients cross the placental barrier from mother to fetus and vice versa. Our Next Gen Innovation Innovation Interns got a behind-the-scenes look at the John Deere sprayer facility at the Iowa State University Research Park, where researchers are hard at work bringing new solutions to the marketplace. The tour provided a fascinating perspective on how artificial intelligence and sustainability can work hand in hand. The state-of-the-art John Deere Technology Innovation Center - Ames Lab is a unique example of the rich public-private partnership between Iowa State University and John Deere. The combination of research, product demonstration and real-world application accelerates product development benefitting students, ag innovation and farmers worldwide. Iowa State University Software Engineering Program senior, Omar Muhammetkulyyev, was part of a three person programming team, Proof by AC, to compete in the November 4th ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest) at the NCNA (North Central North America) Regional contest. @iowastateu served as a host site (one of 19 in the region) for this year's NCNA regional competition under the direction of Dr. Gurpur Prabhu. 130 teams participated. Their team qualified for nationals to be held in Orlando, FL in May 2024. They will be one of 50 teams competing at the national contest. Congratulations to this year's interdisciplinary qualifying team - Omar Muhammetkulyyev (@se_iastate), Rudolph Nahra (@isu_ecpe/Math), and Jose Rodrigo Santamaria (@isucomsci). The Iowa State University KENT Feed Mill and Grain Science Complex is an incredible resource to bridge innovative academic research and industry advancement. The newly opened facility is run primarily by students and was built with flexibility in mind so that it can be a valuable educational and talent pipeline resource long into the future. Did you know? Iowa State University is home to a working dairy farm with nearly 400 cows that produce 30,000 pounds of milk each day. The teaching and research farm is operated mostly by university students and serves as a research hub for both Iowa State University - College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and private groups. Our Next Gen Innovation Impact Study interns had the opportunity to tour the farm, including the industry-leading milking parlor where research data is collected on each and every cow. Alicia Carriquiry, Iowa State University President's Chair in Statistics and director of the Center for Statistics and Applications in Forensic Science (CSAFE), has been named a Hagler Fellow. Carriquiry is one of 15 scholars from around the globe who comprise the 2023-2024 class of Fellows and Distinguished Lecturers of the Hagler Institute for Advanced Study at Texas A&M University. Each year, the Hagler Institute invites a number of nationally and internationally prominent scholars to pursue advanced studies. The Institute serves all fields of study on the Texas A&M campus, including, but not limited to: medicine, science, architecture, social sciences, business, education, engineering, agriculture, law, and veterinary medicine. "The list of scholars invited to the Hagler Institute of Advanced Studies is very impressive," Carriquiry said. "I'm in awe to be in the company of these individuals. It’s been a busy few days for students participating in the College of Design Dean’s Charrette! See what they've been working on and hear from student groups today, Oct. 23, until 5:30 p.m. in the Hansen Exchange (upper King Pavilion). Working with architecture and design researchers and educators from Peru, Cristina Dreifuss-Serrano and Jose Cepero Saravia, students worked in teams to explore the ethics of care and collective repair in relation to designing a key location for Waves Lobitos during the “Lobitos of Care: Landscapes of Collective Repair in the Deserts of Northern Peru” charrette. The organization is a Peruvian NGO that engages youth through skating and surfing to cultivate positive personal development and community-driven impact. #IowaStateInnovates #studentwork
