May 22, 2024 - Warming climate is turning rivers rusty with toxic metals Data from Colorado mountain rivers shows concentrations of copper, zinc and sulphate have doubled in 30 yearsMountain rivers in the US state of Colorado are going rusty and the warming climate is to blame, according to research. An increase in toxic heavy metals has also been observed in Arctic streams, leading to concern that this phenomenon may be more widespread.From the Andes to the European Alps, researchers have seen an increase in heavy metals in mountain streams in recent decades, but it has not been clear what is driving the trend. Analysing 40 years of water chemistry data from 22 of Colorado’s mountain streams, researchers found that the concentrations of copper, zinc and sulphate had doubled over the past 30 years. The study, published in Water Resources Research, found that drier weather and reduced stream flow accounted for about half of the rise, but the remaining increase was most likely due to thawing of underground ice, exposing more rocks to groundwater and releasing the metals contained within them. New Research Highlights! 🌿 Dr. Jason Karl’s team has been busy with two exciting studies: 1️⃣ Oil & Gas Reclamation Analysis: Objective: Use TSS-RESTREND to monitor plant community trends post-reclamation in NW Colorado. Method: Analyze vegetation trends using precipitation data and greenness-to-cover index. Findings: Slight positive increase in plant community response to precipitation over time, indicating recovery. Well pads in less arid areas showed better recovery. Impact: Helps understand plant community dynamics in degraded areas, aiding better land management. 2️⃣ Shrub Volume Estimation Using Drones: Objective: Compare traditional field methods with drone-collected data for estimating shrub volume. Method: Used drone imagery and 3D modeling for volume estimation of seven dominant shrub species in Idaho. Findings: Drone methods matched field estimates (R² > 0.9) for larger shrubs and proved more efficient. Impact: Demonstrates drones as a viable, time-saving alternative for large-scale rangeland vegetation monitoring. Both studies highlight innovative methods to enhance ecological monitoring and land management. 🔬 This spring, a team of scientists from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna traveled to Bosnia-Herzegovina to study the Neretva and Drina rivers, both of which are under extreme threat from hydropower development. The aim of their research was to record the spawning populations of the softmouth trout and Huchen. Led by Dr. Kurt Pinter, the team investigated the spawning behavior of the rare softmouth trout to determine if it spawns in the Neretva upstream to Ulog and in the Ljuta, a tributary. This species is found only in a few rivers in the Balkans, with the best populations existing in the Neretva upstream of Konjic—an area where numerous dams are planned. The team successfully detected spawning softmouth trout and collected eDNA samples in the Ljuta. The Drina River, one of the most important rivers for the globally endangered Huchen, is also threatened by hydropower projects. Plans to dam or divert the Drina and all its tributaries endanger the Huchen’s habitat. To support conservation efforts, the team recorded the spawning stocks of Huchen in the Drina upstream of Foca and its tributaries. 🔬 Plastic biomedia, small, perforated plastic pieces, are used globally in Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology for wastewater treatment systems. Despite improving treatment efficiency, plastic biomedia in MBBR systems pose a potential threat to marine ecosystems by accidental release into the environment, contributing to long-term plastic pollution in the Ocean. The newly published article by Nagai et al (2021) named “First report of plastic biomedia contamination on Brazilian beaches – evidence from the Paraná coas” unveils the first evidence of plastic biomedia pollution on Brazilian beaches. 🇧🇷 The investigation covered 14 Paraná’s beaches and reports the presence of plastic biomedia in 11 of the sampled beaches, including the Mel and Superagui Islands nature reserves. 🌐 Dive into the comprehensive findings, which shed light on the possible sources, transport patterns, and potential environmental implications of this novel plastic pollutant. The Paranaguá Estuarine Complex emerges as a significant source of marine debris with impacts to the entire Paraná coastline. 📊The research highlights that stakeholders should work together to establish strategies for monitoring and mitigating plastic biomedia spillovers from wastewater treatment plants in Brazil. The postgraduate students of the M.Sc. program “Applied Meteorology & Environmental Physics” from the Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics - University of Patras, had the chance to visit the Navarino Environmental Observatory (NEO) station for a 3 days training session. The students were introduced to NEOs research activities and visited NEO atmospheric station at Methoni that monitors the aerosol physical chemical and optical properties, meteorological parameters, atmospheric trace gases and different solar radiation components. Taiwan has an average PM2.5 concentration of 20.2 micrograms per cubic meter; making Taiwan's polluted air more dangerous than smoking a pack of cigarettes daily. The study from National Taiwan University (NTU) links long-term exposure to PM2.5 to an increased risk of adenocarcinoma lung cancer (AdLC). Published in the journal Environmental Research, it found that exposure to the island’s pollution for over 30 years increases the risk of AdLC by 1.044 times more than smoking a pack of cigarettes daily. The risk in an area of residence specifically increases as concentrations rise by 10 micrograms per cubic meter. Women, nonsmokers and adults under 65 years were found to have higher incidence rate ratios (IRRs).
