A pet peeve. Attended an event at the Eko Convention Center Victoria Island Lagos a few days ago and the compere for the night kept saying "take a listen" instead of just "listen". I know that the horse has long bolted from the stable as this is a common expression for some news anchors, journalists and media personalities, but is it correct? What does "take a listen" communicate that is not passed on in "listen" or "listen to this"? I suspect that it is meant to make the speakers sound posh, but just ends up grating. Fortunately, I hear that the expression hasn’t yet made it into modern dictionaries, so I am happy that that bastion remains unassailed. While we are at it, why do we say "make an announcement" and not "announce". "Make payment" and not "pay". "Make your order" and not "order". "Perform ablution" and not "ablute". "Gain understanding" and not "understand". "Send an application" and not "apply". "Get clarification" and not "clarify".
